Description

RECORDING APPARATUS AND KEYBOARD FOR CONTROLLING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DEVICES FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED USERS
Technical Field
This invention relates to recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling information technology devices for visually impaired users.
Background
More than 150,000 visually impaired persons in Thailand (2013) are experiencing difficulties in data recording. Normally, slate and stylus tools are used for recording data by embossing papers based on six-dot Braille codes, and the embossed paper is read by a finger touch. The problems with this method are that it is difficult to execute, difficult to store, uncopiable, and visually unreadable for normal people. Additionally, using IT devices such as smart phones or computers is also a problem.
The above-mentioned problems can be solved by using Braille Note Taker. The device is comparable to a computer for visually impaired persons without a screen which displays data via Braille cells and output voice by synthesis from recorded characters. Braille Note Takers are generally used in western countries. However, Thai visually impaired people rarely use it as the price can be as high as about 60,000 to 180,000 Baht. Also, its control buttons' positions as well as its appearance are still not suitable for handheld use. Objectives of the invention
The inventors have developed a device for assisting a visually impaired person in performing data recording using recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling IT devices. A visually impaired person can record data by pressing a combination of buttons based on Braille codes designed in configurations and positions that can be used conveniently. The devices output audio data using one-by-one pre-recorded character, not by synthesis. Users can go back to listen to the recorded data, transmit the recorded data to information technology devices, for example, smart phones, tablets, computers, and control those devices via said keyboard. The recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling information technology devices for visually impaired users is compact with about the size of a case for glasses, making it easy to be carried. The recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling information technology devices for visually impaired users (1) comprises 10 pushbuttons divided into 6 buttons for Braille codes (11), 1 button as a cursor (12), and 3 buttons at the front as a Backspace (13), Spacebar (14) and Enter (15). To record data, users have to press the 6 buttons based on Braille codes. Then, the recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling the information technology devices for visually impaired users outputs recorded data character by character with pre-recorded voice via a speaker or an earphone. The recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling information technology devices has a USB port for charging battery and serves as a USB keyboard. Brief Description of Drawings
Fig. 1 shows appearance of the recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling information technology devices for visually impaired users according to the invention.
Fig. 2 shows a flow diagram of operation of the recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling information technology devices for visually impaired users according to the invention.

Said 10 buttons are divided into 6 Braille code buttons (11) which are arranged in row at the top near the back edge, and, provided in a lower area next to the 6 Braille code buttons (11), one cursor control button (12) for controlling a cursor, and 3 control buttons at the front of the device. Said 3 control buttons consist of a Backspace button (13) for going back, a Spacebar button (14) for going forward, and an Enter button (15) for confirmation or selection.
Moreover, the recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling information technology devices for visually impaired users also comprise a speaker for outputting sound, an earphone port (25) for connecting to earphone devices connected to an audio amplifying circuit and also a connection means for connecting to information technology devices which is port (27) that supports a connection via a USB cable or a wireless signal connecting part for transmitting-receiving data. Said wireless signal connecting part can be a Bluetooth wireless signal connecting part (26) or a Wi-Fi wireless signal connecting part.
The inside of the recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling information technology devices for visually impaired users also consists of a speaker (24) connected to an audio amplifier for outputting characters-reading voice obtained by the processing of a microcontroller (21). At the lower area of the device body, there is a compartment (28) with a cover for containing a battery that supplies electrical power to an internal circuit board of the recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling information technology devices for visually impaired users according to the invention.
An internal circuit board consists of the microcontroller (21) for processing signal received from the above-mentioned control buttons. The input data required to be stored is processed and transmitted to a data recording memory (22). Then, data characteristics and character data in voice recording memory (23) are compared, for example, the prerecorded voice of characters "n" to "a", "A" to "Z" and "0" to "9" for outputting sound through the audio amplifier and then to the speaker. The above microcontroller (21) also controls an electric charge circuit or charges a battery, and controls the transmission- receiving process via connection means to information technology devices.
The microcontroller functions to control operations of the recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling information technology devices for visually impaired users when command buttons are pressed for data recording. The microcontroller transmits the input data to be recorded in the memory (22) and reads the audio data of the data to be recorded from the audio memory (23). Then, the audio data is output through the speaker so that users can listen via the speaker or the earphone.
The recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling information technology devices for visually impaired users according to the invention comprises the connection means for connection with other information technology devices through the USB connection port or the Bluetooth wireless signal transmitting part (26) or the Wi-Fi wireless connection part which transmits the recorded data to information technology devices and also functions as a control keyboard via the above connection means so that users can send short messages (SMS) from their mobile phones or create document files thereafter.
The appearance of the recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling information technology devices for visually impaired users according to the invention is designed to be conveniently used. Both of the rear corner regions (16) of the device are inclined so users can place their little fingers there. This helps in firmly holding the recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling information technology devices for visually impaired users and supports pressing force of the 3 buttons (13-15) at the front edge of the body. On one of the front corners, a ring (17) is formed for tying a strap with the recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling infomiation technology devices for visually impaired users.
The recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling information technology devices for visually impaired users consists of 3 main components: 1. an electric circuit board, 2. a rechargeable battery, 3. a body and pushbutton cover made of plastic. In an assembling process, the battery is placed under the electric circuit board, in other words, the electric circuit board is placed above the battery to accommodate a large and high capacity battery.
Operating steps
A user can operate the recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling information technology devices for visually impaired users by simply pressing buttons based on Braille codes, causing the device to record the input data into the memory and simultaneously read pre-recorded audio files of the respective characters, and output the sound. The users can go back to listen to the old recorded data by controlling the cursor control button (12) such that it moves to the desired position. The recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling information technology devices for visually impaired users can be used in both Thai and English languages, and any other languages can be added later by recording character-reading voices of additional languages. The recording apparatus and keyboard for controlling information technology devices for visually impaired users is compact with about the size of a case for glasses. It operates by using energy from the rechargeable battery. Its compact size makes the device portable for outdoor use.
