Description

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR TURNING PAGES IN FLEXIBLE DISPLAY
The present invention relates to a technology for configuring a page turning function, and more particularly, to a method and apparatus for providing a page turning function by applying a flexible display.
This work was supported by the ICT R&D program of MSIP/IITP. [10041891, Development on Community Broadcast Technology based on MaaS (Media as a Service) providing Smart Convergence Service]
With the developments of communication technology and terminal manufacturing technology, a portable mobile terminal capable of providing a communication service has been evolved into a device that supports integrated communication and computing functions in addition to existing services, such as a voice call and a text message. The mobile terminal called a smartphone may support a variety of functions such as an Internet service, an E-mail service, a mobile messenger service, an E-book service, a music player, and a motion picture player.
Also, a technology for a display mounted on a mobile terminal is also in development and thus, a display device, such as a touch screen, capable of detecting a direct input of a user is being generalized. Further, a flexible display device has been developed and has been applied to a mobile terminal.
A flexible display refers to a bendable display device as a flexible screen. Since the flexible display uses a plastic substrate instead of using a general glass substrate, a low temperature manufacturing processor is used instead of using an existing manufacturing processor in order to prevent damage to a substrate. Due to a characteristic of the flexible display such as a lightness and a fragility, the flexible display is predicted to be applicable to various types of information technology (IT) devices based on a portable device such as a mobile terminal. In particular, the flexible display may be aggressively employed in fields in which an application of an existing flat display is limited or impossible. For example, the flexible display may be applicable to an E-book field capable of replacing publications, a foldable or rolling-up subminiature personal computer (PC) having achieved a maximized portability, and a wearable device.
However, research on a user interface (UI) capable of sufficiently using a characteristic of the flexible display has not been sufficiently conducted. As an example, in the case of an E-book service, an existing E-book exclusive terminal or a mobile device providing an E-book function provides an inconvenient user interface based on the presumption of using an existing flat display that requires a key control of a terminal or a menu selection on a touch screen to view another page of E-book content.
Accordingly, there is a need for a user interface using a human technological and convenient method by sufficiently applying a characteristic of a flexible display.
An aspect of the present invention provides a method and device for providing a page turning function by applying a flexible display.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a method of providing a page turning function on a mobile device including a flexible display. The method may include executing an application that provides content including a plurality of pages; detecting a bending on a predetermined area of the flexible display; and displaying a page turning effect on the content provided from the application, in response to the detected bending.
The detecting of the bending may include detecting a bending level, and the displaying of the page turning effect may include executing the page turning function at a different rate based on the detected bending level. Also, the detecting of the bending may include determining, as a bending for the page turning function, a bending detected in response to a touch on the predetermined area continuing during at least a predetermined time duration.

FIG. 5 is a flowchart illustrating a method of providing a page turning function on a mobile device including a flexible display according to an embodiment of the present invention.
Referring to FIG. 5, in operation S510, the mobile device 100 executes an application that provides content including a plurality of pages. The application to be executed may include, for example, an E-book viewer, a music playback application, a motion picture play application, and a broadcasting channel application, however, is not limited thereto. The application to be executed may be a predetermined application configured to use content including a plurality of pages.
When related content is displayed in response to an execution of the application, the mobile device 100 detects a bending applied on a predetermined area of the flexible display 110 in operation S520. In operation S530, the mobile device 100 displays a page turning effect on the content provided from the application, in response to the detected bending.
In detail, when detecting a bending, the mobile device 100 may detect a bending level according to a bending strength and may display the page turning effect at a different rate based on a different bending level. For example, the mobile device 100 may determine at least three bending levels, for example, a first bending level indicating a slightly bent level, a second bending level indicating an intermediately bent level, and a third bending level indicating a significantly bent level, based on threshold strengths predetermined by the sensor 160, and may display the page turning effect at three or more rates based on the detected three bending levels. For example, the mobile device 100 may execute the page turning function at a first rate, for example, one page per second in response to the first bending level, a second rate, for example, two pages per second in response to the second bending level, at a third rate, for example, 30 pages per second in response to the third bending level. Also, a bending level and a page turning rate are not limited to the aforementioned configuration. Depending on embodiments, the mobile device 100 may display the page turning effect at a more number of page turning rates based on a more number of bending levels, for example, at five different page turning rates corresponding to five bending levels.
Also, when detecting a bending, the mobile device 100 may detect a bending direction and may display the page turning effect in a different direction based on the detected bending direction. For example, the mobile device 100 may determine at least two directions, for example, a first bending direction indicating a direction in which a flexible display bends upwards (see FIG. 2), and a second bending direction indicating a direction in which the flexible display bends downwards (see FIG. 3), and may display the page turning effect in a different direction based on the detected bending direction. For example, the mobile device 100 may execute a previous page turning function in response to the detected first bending direction and may execute a next page turning function in response to the detected second bending direction. Also, depending on embodiments, the mobile device 100 may execute the next page turning function in response to the detected first bending direction and may also execute the previous page turning function in response to the detected second bending direction.
Further, the mobile device 100 may execute the page turning function at a different rate and in a different direction based on the detected bending level and bending direction.
Also, the mobile device 100 may execute the page turning function in response to a touch input and a bending on the flexible display 110. In detail, the mobile device 100 may determine, as a bending operation for the page turning function, a bending detected in response to a touch on the predetermined area continuing during at least a predetermined time duration. Through the embodiment example, an embodiment of the present invention may detect, as a bending operation for a page turning effect, an intuitive user operation of a user contacting a finger on the flexible display 110 and bending the flexible display 110 with applying a force to move a page of content executed by an application.
As another example, the mobile device 100 may execute a page turning function in response to a touch input and a bending on the flexible display 110. In detail, the mobile device 100 may detect a touch on at least two predetermined areas, for example, lower end corner portions on both sides of the flexible display 110 or a plurality of predetermined areas set on both sides of the flexible display 110, and may determine, as a bending operation for the page turning function, a bending performed on at least one of the at least two areas. Through the embodiment example, an embodiment of the present invention may detect, as a bending operation for a page turning effect, an intuitive user operation of a user holding both lower end corners or both sides of the flexible display 110 with both hands and bending the flexible display 110 to move a page of content executed by an application.
FIG. 6 is a view illustrating an example in which a user is bending a mobile device including a flexible display.
For example, when it is assumed that the user is reading E-book content using a flexible display device of the present invention, the user may activate a similar page turning effect by holding both corners of the mobile device 100 with hands and bending the same as illustrated in FIG. 6, which is like a physical operation of turning a page to a next page while actually reading a book.
FIG. 7 illustrates an example of divided areas on a flexible display detected to be bent.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, it is possible to divide the flexible display 110 into areas on which a bending is recognized and to enable the sensor 160 to detect the bending. For example, referring to FIG. 7, areas on which a bending is detected may include six areas, for example, an upper-left area 710, an upper-right area 720, an intermediate-left area 730, an upper-right area 740, a lower-left area 750, and a lower-right area 760. However, a setting of such bending detection areas is an example and thus, the areas 710, 720, 730, 740, 750, and 760 of FIG. 7 may be set as areas of occupying only an upper-left corner, an upper-right corner, an intermediate-left corner, an intermediate-right corner, a lower-left corner, and a lower-right corner depending on embodiments, instead of occupying the whole area of the flexible display 110. Further, depending on embodiments, bending detecting areas may be set using a method different from the area dividing method of FIG. 7.
An embodiment of the present invention may detect a bending on a single area among the aforementioned areas, and may display a page turning effect on content provided from an application executed in response to the detected bending. Also, an embodiment of the present invention may detect a bending level and a bending direction on the area and may execute a page turning function at a different rate and in a different direction based on the detected bending level and bending direction.
Also, an embodiment of the present invention may determine, as a bending for a page turning function, a bending detected on a single area among the upper-left corner, the intermediate-left corner, and the lower-left corner, and a single area among the upper-right corner, the intermediate-right corner, and the lower-right corner. Through the embodiment example, an embodiment of the present invention may detect, as a bending operation for a page turning effect, an intuitive user operation of a user holding and bending a predetermined location on the right of the flexible display 110 with one hand while holding a predetermined location on the left of the flexible display 110 with the other hand, to move a page of content executed by an application.
FIGS. 8A and 8B illustrate an example of a page turning effect of turning a page from a lower end corner of the page in response to a detected bending, FIGS. 8C and 8D illustrate an example of a page turning effect of turning a page from an upper end corner of the page in response to a detected bending, and FIGS. 8E and 8F illustrate an example of a page turning effect of turning a page from one side to another side of the page in response to a detected bending.
In response to a page turning function executed in response to the detected bending, the mobile device 100 may display the page turning effects as illustrated in FIGS. 8A and 8B, FIGS. 8C and 8D, and FIGS. 8E and 8F. However, based on a characteristic of paged content or depending on embodiments, the mobile device 100 may also display a different type of page turning effect in response to the detected bending.
FIG. 9 illustrates an example of a display screen on which content including a plurality of pages to which a page turning function is applicable is displayed according to an embodiment of the present invention.
As described above, the page turning function of the present invention may be applicable to E-book content including a plurality of pages, music list content including a plurality of pages, game list content including a plurality of pages, and broadcasting channel list content including a plurality of pages, however, is not limited thereto. Thus, the page turning function may be applicable to predetermined content including a plurality of pages and requiring the page turning function. A page configuration of FIG. 9 is an example capable of selecting a predetermined item from content including a plurality of items, for example, a plurality of audio files and a plurality of motion picture files. The page turning effect may be applicable in response to a detected bending to select the predetermined item. Also, when the content is E-book content including a plurality of pages, book content may be displayed based on a page unit, which differs from the content configuration of FIG. 9. The page turning effect of FIGS. 8A through 8C may be displayed in response to the detected bending.
FIG. 10 is a flowchart illustrating a method of setting a page turning function on a mobile device including a flexible display according to an embodiment of the present invention.
Referring to FIG. 10, in operation S1010, the mobile device 100 executes an application that provides content including a plurality of pages. In operation S1020, the mobile device 100 selects a menu for setting a page turning effect. Such a menu selection may be performed using a predetermined key or a key control of the mobile device 100, a predetermined touch or drag input on a display, and a predetermined bending operation for a menu selection, depending on embodiments. When entering into a page turning effect setting mode, the mobile device 100 detects a bending on a predetermined area of the flexible display 110 in operation S1030. In operation S1040, the mobile device 100 sets the detected bending as a bending operation for executing a page turning effect on the content provided from the application.
Also, detecting the bending in operation S1030 may include detecting a bending level and detecting a bending direction. Accordingly, in operation S1040, the detected bending may be set as a bending operation for executing the page turning effect at a different turning rate based on the detected bending level or in a different direction based on the detected bending direction. Through the page turning effect setting, a user of the mobile device 100 may change a bending operation predetermined for executing the page turning effect as another desired bending operation.
FIG. 11 is a flowchart illustrating a method of setting a page turning function on a mobile device including a flexible display according to another embodiment of the present invention.
Referring to FIG. 11, in operation S1110, the mobile device 100 executes an application that provides content including a plurality of pages. In operation S1120, the application determines whether the mobile device 100 supports a flexible display. When the mobile device 100 is determined to support the flexible display in operation S1120, the mobile device 100 detects a bending on a predetermined area of the flexible display 110 in operation S1130. In operation S1140, the mobile device 100 displays a page turning effect on the content provided from the application, in response to the detected bending.
Conversely, when the mobile device 100 is determined not to support the flexible display in operation S1120, that is, when the display 110 is not the flexible display, the mobile device 100 detects a drag on a predetermined area of a display in operation S1150. In operation S1140, the mobile device 100 displays the page turning effect on the content provided from the application in response to the detected drag.
Also, detecting the drag in operation S1150 may include detecting a drag distance, for example, a distance dragged from a drag start point and detecting a drag direction. In operation S1160, the mobile device 100 may execute the page turning function at a different rate based on the detected drag distance in response to the detected drag, and may also execute the page turning function in a different direction based on the detected drag direction in response to the detected drag. For example, the mobile device 100 may execute the page turning function at one page per second in response to a movement of about 3 cm, four pages per second in response to a movement of about 6 cm, and 40 pages per second in response to a movement of about 9 cm from the drag start point.
Through the aforementioned embodiment example, when a page turning function of the present invention is configured on an application, the application may be installed and executed in all of a mobile device including a flexible display and a mobile device not supporting the flexible display, without separately changing a design, regardless of whether the mobile device supports the flexible display.
