Definitions

  • the object of the invention is an electronic price label and an electronic price label system.
  • Electronically-controllable compact displays are continuously finding new and wider applications.
  • a well-known and a steadily growing field of applications can be found in shops and warehouses, where instead of conventional paper price labels, the price and other product information is presented using electronic price labels.
  • An electronic price label system is a system used by retailers for displaying product prices.
  • electronic price labels are realized as electronic display modules that can be fastened to the front edge of a shop shelf or to a product. These modules nowadays use different technologies for displaying the price and also other information of interest to a customer.
  • the price window can be automatically updated by means of a communication network always when the price of a product changes. This automatic system reduces the labor costs of pricing and improves pricing accuracy.
  • Electronic price labels are particularly appropriate for large shops and supermarkets that have thousands, or tens of thousands, of products on sale and the prices of which must be updated frequently and accurately.
  • An electronic display module can be updated from a centralized control system via wireless communication.
  • Wireless systems have their major technological bottleneck in the need for individual power supplies for each electronic price label and the requirement for long power supply lifetime, i.e. operational lifetime for the battery.
  • the wireless systems need to be able to provide a dependable communication channel in an environment that has high number of individual receiver-transmitter units that in order to prolong the battery life, need to operate with minimum transmitting power.
  • EPD Electronic Paper Display
  • a display technology suitable for electronic price label applications is the so- called Electronic Paper Display (EPD), which possesses a paper-like high- contrast appearance, ultra-low power consumption, and a thin, lightweight form.
  • the aim of an EDP is to give the viewer the experience of reading from paper, while providing the capability to electronically update the displayed information.
  • EPDs are a technology enabled, as one possibility, by means of electronic ink. Such ink carries an electrical charge enabling it to be updated electronically.
  • Electronic ink is well suited for EPDs as it is a reflective technology that requires no frontlight or backlight, is viewable under a wide range of lighting conditions, including direct sunlight, and requires no power to maintain an image. Electrical power is only consumed when the displayed data is changed.
  • wireless electronic price labels or corresponding electronically controlled wireless displays are faced with a large number of requirements that are partly dictated by the manufacturing process and partly by the end use, for example, the operating environment in a shop and manageability by shop personnel.
  • WO 0067110 (A1 ) (E Ink Corporation) presents a display unit for an electronic price label system, which unit utilizes electronic ink and EPD technology.
  • the electronic display unit in publication WO 0067110 presents a printable electronic display, which is composed of an encapsulated electrophoretic display medium.
  • This electronic display is flexible and has in large measure the applications of a printed display.
  • the encapsulated electrophoretic display medium used in this invention can be printed, the display itself can be made inexpensively.
  • the encapsulated electrophoretic display medium is an optoelectronically active material that comprises at least two phases: an electrophoretic contrast media phase and a coating/binding phase.
  • An electrophoretic display medium can form e.g.
  • the electrophoretic phase comprises at least one species of encapsulated electrophoretic particles, having distinct physical and electrical characteristics, dispersed in a clear or dyed suspending fluid.
  • the coating/binding phase includes a polymer matrix that surrounds the electrophoretic phase.
  • the polymer in the polymeric binder is capable of being dried, crosslinked, or otherwise cured as in traditional inks, and therefore a printing process can be used to deposit the encapsulated electrophoretic display medium onto a substrate.
  • an electronic price label In order for electronic price labels to be easily manageable during the manufacturing process and in the following logistical steps, the encapsulation of an electronic price label needs to provide a suitable structure against damage and preferably also without any protruding or intruding rims or order structures. Since an electronic price label undergoes a lot of handling during the preparations before it is installed on products, the requirements for these display modules clearly differ from the requirements for e.g. small-sized electronic devices to be personally carried in pockets, et cetera. This also opens up more possibilities to choose materials, and also in many cases relieves requirements for the size/dimensions of the devices.
  • Publication WO 2009103857 presents a layered, thin display device for an electronic price label composed of a flexible display layer comprising display material, preferably electronic paper, a flexible backplane with electrode structure for driving the display material, a rigid component and a base layer.
  • the device has wireless communication means, including an antenna arranged on the backplane.
  • the main benefits of the display module according to publication WO 2009103857 lie in the mechanical resistance of a substantially thin and flexible display module laminate against mechanical impacts, the completely smooth outer surface and also in the thickness to aid overall manageability. Further, the encapsulation technique results in casings that have good performance in respect to wireless communication using an internal antenna.

  • separate fasteners such as e.g. with plastic clips, metal clips, wire or glue.
  • the electronic price labels 100 communicate wirelessly with a base station 103.
  • This wireless communication can be based on a radio connection having passive backscattering or e.g. according to publication WO 2009103857.
  • a base station actively sends radio signals and instead of responding with active radio transmission, the electronic price labels do not use a radio transmission; instead, they respond by modulating the reflected power to the base station.
  • the modulation is achieved, typically, by changing the load state of the antenna of the price label, e.g. by connecting and disconnecting the antenna between the ground and non-ground potential. This modulation of the backscattered signal allows the electronic price label to respond to the base station and further to the server 104 of the shop.
  • Each electronic price label can be identified by its own identification code that the electronic price label in question knows to listen for in the transmission from the base station. After receiving new information, an instruction or a command from the server of the shop via a base station, the electronic price label can acknowledge the reception of the transmission by using modulation of reflected backscattering in a proper and timely manner for the server to identify that the response is coming from the electronic price label is question.
  • the server may have a certain listening period after a transmission directed to a certain electronic price label for allowing the module to answer during that time.
  • Base stations are typically connected in a wired manner, e.g. via an Ethernet connection or via a WLAN or corresponding wireless connection, to a base station controller 105.
  • This base station controller is further connected to the driver software running on the shop-level server, which driver software contains the price information and other product information.
  • Some retail chains might have a server only in the main office.
  • price information is changed in the shop-level server locally according to pre-programmed instructions therein, or manually by the shopkeeper, or remotely according to instructions received from a server 108 at retail chain level, this information is transmitted via the base stations to individual electronic price labels.

Description

ELECTRONIC PRICE LABEL AND AN ELECTRONIC PRICE LABEL SYSTEM
FIELD OF TECHNOLOGY
The object of the invention is an electronic price label and an electronic price label system.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Electronically-controllable compact displays are continuously finding new and wider applications. A well-known and a steadily growing field of applications can be found in shops and warehouses, where instead of conventional paper price labels, the price and other product information is presented using electronic price labels.
An electronic price label system is a system used by retailers for displaying product prices. Typically electronic price labels are realized as electronic display modules that can be fastened to the front edge of a shop shelf or to a product. These modules nowadays use different technologies for displaying the price and also other information of interest to a customer. The price window can be automatically updated by means of a communication network always when the price of a product changes. This automatic system reduces the labor costs of pricing and improves pricing accuracy.
Electronic price labels are particularly appropriate for large shops and supermarkets that have thousands, or tens of thousands, of products on sale and the prices of which must be updated frequently and accurately. An electronic display module can be updated from a centralized control system via wireless communication. Wireless systems have their major technological bottleneck in the need for individual power supplies for each electronic price label and the requirement for long power supply lifetime, i.e. operational lifetime for the battery. In addition, the wireless systems need to be able to provide a dependable communication channel in an environment that has high number of individual receiver-transmitter units that in order to prolong the battery life, need to operate with minimum transmitting power.
A display technology suitable for electronic price label applications is the so- called Electronic Paper Display (EPD), which possesses a paper-like high- contrast appearance, ultra-low power consumption, and a thin, lightweight form. The aim of an EDP is to give the viewer the experience of reading from paper, while providing the capability to electronically update the displayed information. EPDs are a technology enabled, as one possibility, by means of electronic ink. Such ink carries an electrical charge enabling it to be updated electronically. Electronic ink is well suited for EPDs as it is a reflective technology that requires no frontlight or backlight, is viewable under a wide range of lighting conditions, including direct sunlight, and requires no power to maintain an image. Electrical power is only consumed when the displayed data is changed. In order become widely applied in different types of applications, wireless electronic price labels or corresponding electronically controlled wireless displays are faced with a large number of requirements that are partly dictated by the manufacturing process and partly by the end use, for example, the operating environment in a shop and manageability by shop personnel.
WO 0067110 (A1 ) (E Ink Corporation) presents a display unit for an electronic price label system, which unit utilizes electronic ink and EPD technology. The electronic display unit in publication WO 0067110 presents a printable electronic display, which is composed of an encapsulated electrophoretic display medium. This electronic display is flexible and has in large measure the applications of a printed display. In addition, since the encapsulated electrophoretic display medium used in this invention can be printed, the display itself can be made inexpensively. The encapsulated electrophoretic display medium is an optoelectronically active material that comprises at least two phases: an electrophoretic contrast media phase and a coating/binding phase. An electrophoretic display medium can form e.g. a full-color, multicolor or two- color (e.g. black & white) display. The electrophoretic phase comprises at least one species of encapsulated electrophoretic particles, having distinct physical and electrical characteristics, dispersed in a clear or dyed suspending fluid. The coating/binding phase includes a polymer matrix that surrounds the electrophoretic phase. The polymer in the polymeric binder is capable of being dried, crosslinked, or otherwise cured as in traditional inks, and therefore a printing process can be used to deposit the encapsulated electrophoretic display medium onto a substrate. In order for electronic price labels to be easily manageable during the manufacturing process and in the following logistical steps, the encapsulation of an electronic price label needs to provide a suitable structure against damage and preferably also without any protruding or intruding rims or order structures. Further, the structure of the encapsulation of an electronic price label needs to be such that the wireless communication with the control system can be realized with minimal or negligible interference from the encapsulation itself or from a surrounding structure. Publication WO 2009103857 presents a layered, thin display device for an electronic price label composed of a flexible display layer comprising display material, preferably electronic paper, a flexible backplane with electrode structure for driving the display material, a rigid component and a base layer. The device has wireless communication means, including an antenna arranged on the backplane. This thin layer structure enables a roll-to-roll or web-based manufacturing process. The main benefits of the display module according to publication WO 2009103857 lie in the mechanical resistance of a substantially thin and flexible display module laminate against mechanical impacts, the completely smooth outer surface and also in the thickness to aid overall manageability. Further, the encapsulation technique results in casings that have good performance in respect to wireless communication using an internal antenna.
The environmental impacts caused by manufacturing, such as the carbon footprint of the product or the recyc!ability of parts, have not been taken into account in the manufacture of prior-art electronic price labels.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The invention is based on the idea that a material comprising wood is used as one manufacturing material of electronic price labels.
The electronic price label according to the invention is characterized by what is stated in the characterization part of claim 1. The electronic price label system according to the invention is characterized by what is stated in the characterization part of claim 22. The solution according to the invention is also characterized by what is stated in claims 2-21.
The solution according to the invention now being presented has some significant advantages when it is compared to prior-art solutions. Since the price label according to the invention comprises a material comprising wood, the price label can be recycled better than price labels according to prior art because it contains wood, which is a very recyclable material. The price label according to the invention is also lightweight and stylish in appearance because wood can be fitted to at least one outer surface of the electronic price label. Also the carbon footprint of the manufacturing of a price label according to the invention is smaller than in electronic price labels according to prior art, because renewable materials are used as the manufacturing materials. The structure of the price label according to the invention can also be rigid. In one embodiment of the invention the base layer of the electronic price label is of a material that comprises wood.
In a second embodiment of the invention the rear part of the electronic price label is of a material that comprises wood.
In one embodiment of the invention an aperture is made in the materia! comprising wood, via which aperture the voltage source of the electronic price label can be replaced.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Fig. 1 presents an electronic price label system using electronic price labels 100 realized as a semi-passive label in a supermarket or corresponding sales environment, in which the products 101 are provided with electronic price labels 100 that are typically fastened to the products with separate fasteners, such as e.g. with plastic clips, metal clips, wire or glue.
The electronic price labels 100 communicate wirelessly with a base station 103. This wireless communication can be based on a radio connection having passive backscattering or e.g. according to publication WO 2009103857. In this approach a base station actively sends radio signals and instead of responding with active radio transmission, the electronic price labels do not use a radio transmission; instead, they respond by modulating the reflected power to the base station. The modulation is achieved, typically, by changing the load state of the antenna of the price label, e.g. by connecting and disconnecting the antenna between the ground and non-ground potential. This modulation of the backscattered signal allows the electronic price label to respond to the base station and further to the server 104 of the shop. Each electronic price label can be identified by its own identification code that the electronic price label in question knows to listen for in the transmission from the base station. After receiving new information, an instruction or a command from the server of the shop via a base station, the electronic price label can acknowledge the reception of the transmission by using modulation of reflected backscattering in a proper and timely manner for the server to identify that the response is coming from the electronic price label is question. To facilitate this process, the server may have a certain listening period after a transmission directed to a certain electronic price label for allowing the module to answer during that time.
Base stations are typically connected in a wired manner, e.g. via an Ethernet connection or via a WLAN or corresponding wireless connection, to a base station controller 105. This base station controller is further connected to the driver software running on the shop-level server, which driver software contains the price information and other product information. Some retail chains might have a server only in the main office.
When price information is changed in the shop-level server locally according to pre-programmed instructions therein, or manually by the shopkeeper, or remotely according to instructions received from a server 108 at retail chain level, this information is transmitted via the base stations to individual electronic price labels. The corresponding price information is also available to the checkout counter 106 that is arranged in connection with the shop-level server. A further possibility for transmitting information to be sent to an individual electronic price label is the use of a handheld terminal 107. A handheld terminal can be used by a member of the shop staff allowing him/her to freely move around in the shop and communicate in a wireless manner with the shop-level server and the POS system. This communication can be achieved via a wireless communication network. The handheld terminal can contain only limited functionalities or, depending on the operating power of the device, it can be used to control all the functions that the shop-level server uses. In some applications, in smaller shops with a smaller number of electronic price labels, a handheld terminal may be used instead of a shop-level server. A mobile phone can also be used for communicating with the POS and further with the pricing system. In addition, the shop-level server can be connected to a server at the retail chain level that can provide identical price information and product information to several shops belonging to the same retail chain.
Fig. 2 presents an electronic price label according to one embodiment of the invention. The electronic price label can be fastened to a product with separate fastening means. In the embodiment presented in Fig. 2, the size of the electronic price label is approx. 90 mm (width) x 45 mm (height) x 2 mm (thickness). This gives the price label a convenient size for convenient manual handling, so that text and numbers are easily visible to a customer. The aforementioned dimensions are just exemplary, giving an idea of the size class of the electronic price label. The size of an electronic price label according to the invention can vary according to the application.
The electronic price label 100 presented in Fig. 2 has a layered structure. It is composed of an electronic paper display layer that is composed of electronic paper display material 201 , a backplane layer 203 that is composed of a circuit board having an electrode structure for driving the display, a substantially rigid voltage source 207, such as an accumulator or battery, wherein the thickness of the rigid voltage source 207 is clearly greater than the thickness of the display and backplane layer. The structure of an electronic price label is further composed of a base layer 208, on which base layer is reserved a space for a voltage source 207, wherein this base layer 208 is arranged to offer a substantially even total thickness of the device, In the solution according to Fig. 1 the base layer 208 is formed from a material that comprises wood. The base layer can be e.g. of solid wood, wood veneer or plywood. There can be an aperture in the rear part of the base layer, as is presented in the embodiment of Fig. 2. In a second embodiment of the invention the outer surface of the base layer on the rear side of the electronic price label is intact and does not have any apertures, or at least apertures for batteries or accumulators (not presented in the figures). There can be other apertures, e.g. for fastening the price label, on the outer surface of the base part in the rear wall of the electronic price label. In one embodiment of the invention the voltage source, e.g. an accumulator or battery, of the electronic price label can be replaced. A battery can be replaced e.g. via the aperture in the rear wall of the base part, or the base part can be detached from the other parts of the electronic price label for replacement of the battery.
An electronic price label also comprises means for wireless communication by the aid of an antenna 202. The antenna can be on the same circuit board 203 as the display driver. The electronic price label can be realized as a semi- passive radio-frequency label, which receives its current directly from a radio- frequency signal, by means of modulated backscattering. On top of the antenna 202 on the outer surface of the price label it is possible to fit an additional layer 204, with which e.g. the exterior of the antenna can be covered and to which information relating to the shop or product can be attached.
An inflexible voltage source 207 is enclosed in the space arranged for it by arranging the display, backplane, control circuit board and base layer together with each other in such a way that they form an integral structure. In addition, a protective layer 206 can be disposed in connection with the display layer, circuit board, base layer and/or inflexible voltage source. The inflexible voltage source can be fastened to a separate circuit board 209, which functions as a rear module below the backplane and the antenna.
The backplane and circuit board 203 of the antenna and the control circuit board of the electronic price label can be patterned plastic film (PET, PC, PVC, polyamide) with patterned copper conductor layers. The forming and patterning of the conductors can be made using any method known as such for a person skilled in the art, for example by direct printing of conductive ink or by etching of a thin metal layer. The bottom surface of the backplane has display segment feed lines patterned in a similar way. Each display segment is electrically connected to a corresponding display segment feed line e.g. through a preferably laser-processed lead-in. Also other ways of providing a feed via lead- ins are possible, as is evident for a person skilled in the art. In order to establish an electrical contact from the backplane segments to the display front electrode, which in this example is on the front surface of the flexible electronic display web, an electrically conducting tape 205 acting as a front electrode feed line is laminated on the backplane area. Alternatively and instead of an electrically conducting tape, electrically conducting paste or corresponding material with adhesive nature may be dispensed on the backplane web to make contact with the front plane electrodes.
Fig. 3 presents an electronic price label according to one embodiment of the invention. The price label is similar to the price label presented in Fig. 2 but in the price label of Fig. 3 only the rear part 308, e.g. the rear surface, of the price label is of a material comprising wood. The rear part can be e.g. of solid wood, plywood or wood veneer. The thickness of the rear part can be e.g. 1 mm. In the electronic price label of Fig. 3, between the rear part 308 and the inflexible circuit board 209 and/or the antenna 202 is fitted an intermediate layer 310 of another material, on which intermediate layer is reserved a space for a voltage source 207, wherein this intermediate layer 310 is arranged to offer a substantially even total thickness of the device. The intermediate layer 310 can be e.g. of a flexible material.
In one embodiment of the invention the voltage source of the electronic price label is replaceable. Figs. 4A-4C present cross-sections of an embodiment of an electronic price label according to the invention, in which embodiment the replaceable voltage source can be replaced and can be fastened to the electronic price label 400. In this embodiment the replaceable voltage source 207 is adapted to be fastened to the electronic price label, e.g. to the intermediate layer 310 of it or to the rear surface 408 of the electronic price label, by the aid of the fastening means 410 comprising an adhesive surface. In addition to this, the second electrical connector part 413 is adapted to be fastened to the replaceable voltage source by the aid of the fastening means 410 comprising an adhesive surface. The fastening means 410 comprising an adhesive surface can be e.g. larger in size, essentially the same size or smaller (presented in the figure) than the replaceable voltage source and/or than the connection pole of the replaceable voltage source. If, for example, the fastening means comprising an adhesive surface is larger than the voltage source, it can be used to fasten the voltage source to the electronic price label. In the rear wall 408 of the electronic price label 400 is an aperture 411 for replacing the voltage source. It is possible via the aperture 411 to remove a voltage source from the electronic price label and to install a voltage source into its position in an electronic price label. In size the aperture of the rear wall can e.g. at least the same size as the voltage source. The aperture can also be larger than the voltage source. The aperture 41 1 of the rear wall can be covered with a lid part 409, which fits inside the aperture 41 1. The lid part 409 can be of the same material as the rear wall 408 of the electronic price label.
In one embodiment of the invention the rear wall 408 can be formed of one layer comprising wood, from which layer a lid part of the size of the aperture is detached, e.g. by die cutting. In this way an aperture can be formed in the rear wall and a lid part suited to the aperture.
Fig. 4A presents a situation in which the replaceable voltage source 207 has been installed into the recess 412 of the intermediate layer 310 of the price label. The first electrical connector part 414 remains below the replaceable voltage source 207 and the second electrical connector part 413 remains on the opposite side of the replaceable voltage source 207. The fastening means 410 comprising an adhesive surface is aligned into its correct position, but has not yet been fastened.
Fig. 4B presents a situation in which the fastening means 410 comprising an adhesive surface has been installed into its position essentially on top of the voltage source 207 in such a way that the second electrical connector part 413 remains between the replaceable voltage source 207 and the fastening means 410 comprising an adhesive surface, thus fastening the second electrical connector part 413 to the replaceable voltage source 207. The lid part 409 has not yet been fastened into its position.
Fig. AC presents a situation in which the lid part 409 has been installed into its position in the aperture 411 in the rear wall on top of the voltage source 207, the fastening means 410 comprising an adhesive surface and the recess 412. The lid part 409 can be fastened into its position in a number of different ways. In one embodiment of the invention on the second surface of the lid part, e.g. on the surface coming to the inside of the price label, is an adhesive surface and the lid part can be fastened to the price label by means of the adhesive surface of the lid part. In one embodiment of the invention the fastening means 410 comprising an adhesive surface, with which the second electrical connector can be fastened to the voltage source, comprises an adhesive surface on two sides and the lid part is fastened to this fastening means comprising an adhesive surface. This type of fastening means can be e.g. doub!e-sided tape. In one embodiment of the invention the lid part is fastened with a separate fastening means comprising an adhesive surface onto the rear part of the electronic price label, e.g. with a second fastening means comprising an adhesive surface from outside the rear wall of the electronic price label, i.e. from behind the electronic price label.
A lid part fastened into its position is fastened to the voltage source 207 and/or to the rear wall 408 of the electronic price label. At the same time the fastening means 410 comprising an adhesive surface can fasten to the lid part 409. Thus the replaceable voltage source 207 has been fastened to the electronic price label and the electrical contacts between the first and second electrical connector part and the connection poles of the replaceable voltage source are, owing to the tight fastening, reliable. When the lid part is fitted into its position, the rear part of the price label is essentially even.
In one embodiment of the invention the display labels according to the invention can be fabricated to be curved in shape. This can be done e.g. by adjusting the tension between layers and also by selecting the appropriate materials. The front surface of the electronic price label can be e.g. convex or concave.
