DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The present disclosure provides an economical way for a home or business owner to change the decor of a storage system while said storage system is still assembled, without disassembling the storage system, and without tools. The present disclosure provides a storage system with replaceable exposed surfaces. The interchangeable feature of the exposed surfaces is not visible from the perspective of a casual viewer, mainly because the unfinished or even finished edges of the interchangeable exposed surfaces are substantially concealed by a frame, providing a finished and professional appearance.
The frame can have a small lip that overlaps and is sufficient to substantially conceal any unfinished edges, allowing the frame to be thin and minimally visible. By simply replacing the original exposed surfaces with replacement surfaces having a different design, it may seem to the casual viewer that the whole room was redecorated, and the entire storage system was replaced. The storage system, in accordance with the present disclosure, provides savings in environmental costs by minimizing waste and/or using biodegradable materials. Furthermore, it reduces decorating costs and expands options for redesigning living and working environments.
A storage system vendor may utilize an online tracking system for purchased storage systems and a shopping forum for customers to use to replace exposed surfaces with new designs. The owner of the storage system disclosed may be able to enter a form of identification, such as an order number, onto a storage system vendor's website. Once the vendor website identifies the customer, the customer may view his or her purchased storage system on his or her screen. The customer can then shop for a new design for his or her exposed surfaces by imposing different designs on his or her system viewed on screen.
Referring now to the drawings described in detail below, like reference numerals identify the storage system and identical or corresponding elements in accordance with the present disclosure. With initial reference to Figs. 1-3, an exemplary storage system in accordance with the present disclosure is illustrated and is designated generally as storage system 100. **
Figs, la-b and 2a-b represent perspective views of a storage system 100. Storage system 100 in Figs, la-b and 2a-b includes a plurality of panel sets 104 inserted into a frame 102, with panel set 104e shown in closed and open configurations. The term "panel set" used herein refers to one or more sheets of material coupled together as a unit.
The panel sets 104 have exterior 112 and interior faces 110 (see Fig. 2). The plurality of panel sets 104 in storage system 100 cooperate with the frame 102 to define at least one storage cavity 108 shown as a cabinet in Figs, la- 3, or a standalone panel set 104 enclosed by frame 102 (Figs. 6a- 1 lb).. The term "cabinet," as used herein, includes for example, but is not limited to: an upright cabinet 186, a storage chest 184, and a drawer 182 (see Fig. 5). The storage system 100 may also include multiple cabinets, as shown in Fig. 5.
The plurality of panel sets 104 for storage system 100 additionally can include a top panel set 104a, a bottom panel set 104b, side panel sets 104c,d, a back panel set 104f, and/or a front first panel set 104e. The term "plain panel sets" 104y used herein refer to panel sets 104 that do not include a replaceable exterior layer panel set 138. Plain panel set 104y, shown in Fig. 5, includes internal panel sets 104y that are not exposed.
The term "replaceable panel set" 104x includes one or more exposed panel sets with a removable and replaceable exterior layer panel set 138 as shown in Figs, la and lb. The replaceable panel sets 104x can also include a door panel set 104z that is a door. The door panel set 104z can be located, e.g., in the front of the cabinet 104e (see Fig. la-b and 2a-b), on top as
panel set 104a, on bottom as panel set 104b, or sides as panel set 104c, or 104d, or in the back as panel setl04f (see Fig 5). The door to the storage system 100 can also be part of the receptacle itself, as in drawer 182. In one embodiment, as shown in Fig. 5, one or more panel sets 104 of the drawer 182 may be omitted, such as top panel set 104a.
Access to the storage cavity 108 may be gained by, for example, but not limited to, moving a door panel set 104z from a closed to an open position (such as rotating about on an axis or sliding along a path), or by moving the receptacle itself, e.g., drawer 182 that can slidably open and shut, as shown in Fig. 5. A door panel set 104z can be coupled to frame 102 via hinges 128 so that door panel set 104z can rotate about hinges 128 to open and close.
The storage system 100 can include cabinets configured as, for example, but not limited to, kitchen cabinets, utility cabinets, office filing cabinets, and stand-alone or built-in furniture (such as used in a bedroom, living room, dining room, and bathroom). A storage system 100 cabinet can stand on a floor surface or, alternatively, may be mounted to a wall, for example, but not limited to, the wall of a building with, e.g., via connectors 122 or a bracket. Additionally, a person can mount a support 126 (shown in Fig. 3) to a wall, and then mount the cabinet to the support 126.
Fig. 3 shows an exploded view of the storage system 100 in greater detail. In one embodiment, the frame 102 may have a hollow space 142 running through it allowing frame 102 to be lightweight, as shown in Fig. 4 and 7-9. The frame 102 includes legs 114-120 and frame connectors 122, 140, shown in Figs. 3, 6a-b. A panel set 104 can be inserted into the frame 102 through the front of the storage system 100, with the interior face 110 of the first panel set 104 approaching the plurality of legs 114 before the exterior face 112.
Legs 114 (for example, legs 114a-d), enclose panel set 104e, as shown in Figs. 3,6a-b, lOa-b and 1 la-b. The term "enclose" as used herein, refers to surrounding or encircling panel set 104e on at least two edges 146. The term "edge" as used herein, refers to the rim or outer boundary forming the border of panel sets 104. Legs 116-120 (e.g. legs 116a-d, 118a,c,d, and 120a,c,d), can enclose side panel sets 104c,d and back panel set 104f. Legs 118 (e.g. 118a-d,) can enclose top panel set 104a, and legs 120 (e.g. 120a-d,) can enclose bottom panel set 104b.
In one embodiment, the legs 114- 120, e.g. 114 a-d, can be coupled to one another via, for example, but not limited to, dovetail coupling, connectors, or snap-fit, as is known by persons skilled in the art, to enclose panel set 104x or 104y in frame 102. In one embodiment, legs 114- 120 can be coupled to one another via corner brackets 140 and/ or connectors 122 to form the frame 102 as an integral frame 102. The term "integral frame" as used herein, refers to forming a frame 102 as a single unit from one or more parts. The connectors 122 can include, for example, but not limited to, screws, fasteners, bolts, wires, brackets, and corner brackets 140, and cables.
In one embodiment, as shown in an exploded view in Fig. 6a-b, a corner bracket 140 is provided that can hold the legs 114 a-d of the frame 102 together at the respective corners of replaceable panel set 104x. Connectors 122, e.g. screws, can then hold the corner bracket 140 in place. Legs 120a and 120b can be coupled to one another via connectors 122 without a corner bracket 140, as well. Legs 120c and 120d can be coupled to one another via connector 122, and leg 120d coupled to leg 120a. Leg 116a can be coupled to legs 120a and 120d. Leg 116b can be coupled to legs 120d and 120c. Leg 116d can be coupled to legs 120c and 120b, and leg 116c can be coupled to legs 120b and 120a.
Similarly, legs 114,116, 118 can be coupled via connectors 122 to form an integral frame 102, as shown in Fig. 3. Thus, frame 102 can form a polyhedron, for example, but not limited to,
a cuboid as shown in Figs. la-5. In one embodiment, a leg 114 can be curved and not straight to form curved frame 102. Thus, integral frame 102 may form a shape that has curves well. The frame 102 and panel sets 104 can remain stationary, and do not need to be opened or
disassembled to remove or replace a replaceable exterior layer 138a.
In one embodiment, the legs 114 of the frame 102 can form an integral frame 102 by coupling directly to the panel sets 104, and need not additionally be coupled to one another, as shown in Figs. 6b and 8b. The frame legs 114 can have a nosing 222 that protrudes
perpendicularly from frame 102 and embeds into the backing panel set 132, coupling the frame 102 legs 114 to the backing panel set 132. The term "nosing" 222, as used herein, refers to a ridge protruding and projecting from the frame 102. The backing panel setl32 may have a groove precut to receive the frame nosing 222, allowing the nosing 222 to easily fit into and embed into the backing panel set 132. The nosing 222 can have a sharp edge to easily penetrate into the backing panel set 132. The nosing 222 can be a part of, and one unit with the frame 102, or in one embodiment, the nosing 222 can be coupled to the frame 102.
In one embodiment, the frame 102 and panel sets 104 cooperate as separate units coupled to form the storage system 100 (Figs, la-3), or a standalone panel set 104 enclosed by frame 102 (Figs. 6a- 1 lb). In one embodiment, the frame 102 and panel sets 104 cooperate and overlap as a coextensive unit. The term "coextensive" as used herein refers to a sharing and overlapping of space.
In one embodiment, a shelf peg insert 124 can be coupled to each of legs 116a-d and is provided with holes 125. Shelf pegs (not shown) can be inserted in holes 125 to provide a support for a shelf (not shown). In one embodiment, a second plurality of legs 114-120, such as a plurality from legs 116, 118 or 120 of frame 102, can be coupled to a permanent structure. The
term permanent structure, as used herein, refers to a floor, ceiling or wall of a building, or wall of a structure affixed thereto. Any portion of the permanent structure surface can replace one or more of panel sets 104.
Fig. 6a-b and 7-9 show exploded and top cross-sectional views, respectively, of replaceable panel set 104x. Replaceable panel set 104x can include a combination of layers, including a backing panel set 132 and the exterior layer panel set 138 both shown in Figs. 7-1 lb. Backing panel set 132 may include a backing board 132a and/or a layer 132b, e.g., with magnetic properties. The backing panel 132a can be formed of, for example, but not limited to, any combination of one or more of the following: concrete/cement, glass, drywall, wood, metal, glass, tile, plastic, and fiberglass. The exterior layer panel set 138 includes an exterior layer 138a and/or a layer 138b with magnetic properties. The exterior layer 138a can be formed of, for example, but not limited to, any one or more of the following: plastic, glass, wood, metal, concrete or a combination thereof.
Layer 132b can be coupled to the backing board 132a, for example, but not limited to, adhesively, magnetically, or mechanically, forming one embodiment of backing panel set 132. The exterior layer 138a can be coupled to layer 138b, for example, but not limited to, adhesively, magnetically, or mechanically, providing one embodiment of exterior layer panel set 138.
In one embodiment, exterior layer panel set 138 can be coupled to backing panel set 132 via, for example, but not limited to, adhesive, mechanical or other magnetic means. Exterior layer panel set 138 can be magnetically held in place by backing panel set 132. In one embodiment shown in Fig. 7 and 8a-c, a second layer with magnetic properties 138b and first layer with magnetic properties 132b can provide the magnetic force between exterior layer panel set 138 and backing panel set 132.
In one embodiment, the thickness of the layers 132-138 can be minimized in order to preserve the appearance of replaceable panel set 104x, and to substantially disguise that replaceable panel set 104x includes replaceable exterior layer panel set 138 as an additional, removable layer. Additionally, minimizing the thickness of replaceable panel set 104x aids in ease of transport and assembly.
In one embodiment, the exterior layer 138a can be between 0.028- 0.25 inches thick. In another embodiment, the exterior layer 138a can be between 0.028-0.5 inches. The first and second layers with magnetic properties 138b and 132b can each be between 0.010 -0.060 inches thick. The backing panel set can be between 0.25 to 0.50 inches thick.
In one embodiment of storage system 100, replaceable panel set 104x coupled to frame 102 can be between 0.5 inches to 1 inch thick. In one embodiment, the replaceable panel set 104x may be part of an internal entrance and exit door such as a room access door. In this case, the replaceable panel set 104x can be between 1 and 2 inches thick.
In one embodiment, for example, the backing board 132a can be 0.25 inches thick, the first layer with magnetic properties 132b can be 0.025 inches thick, the second layer with magnetic properties 138b can be 0.030 inches thick, and the exterior layer 139a can be 0.028 inches thick. The replaceable panel set 104x coupled to the frame 102, in the above embodiment can be 0.875 inches thick. The frame 102 may not flush with the back of the backing panel 132a and adds an additional thickness.
In one embodiment, for example, the backing board 132a can be 0.25 inches thick, the first layer with magnetic properties 132b can be 0.050 inches thick, the second layer with magnetic properties 138b can be 0.050 inches thick, and the exterior layer 139a can be 0.0625 inches thick. The replaceable panel set 104x, in the above embodiment can be 1.00 inches thick.
In an embodiment having a frame 102 with nosing 222 that embeds into the backing panel set 132, the backing panel set 132 can be in the range of 0.375- 0.75 inches thick, and the panel set 104 can be between 0.75 and 1.25 inches thick. The backing board 132a can be 0.5 inches thick, the first layer with magnetic properties 132b can be 0.025 inches thick, the second layer with magnetic properties 138b can be 0.030 inches thick, and the exterior layer 139a can be 0.028 inches thick. The replaceable panel set 104x can be 0.875 inches thick. The frame 102 in this embodiment can flush with the panel set 104 and may add no additional thickness.
In one embodiment, the backing panel set 132 can be inserted in to the frame 102 and supported via a channel 148 along at least two legs 114 of frame 102. In one embodiment, channel 148 can be formed along the length of four legs, 114a, 114c, 114b and 114d, of frame 102, extending in the longitudinal direction of each leg, as may be seen in cross-sectional perspective views, Figs. 7-9. Each channel 148 can extend along the entire of a leg. Channel 148 can include a compensating structure 172 that can be included in or part of channel 148.
In one embodiment shown in Fig. 9, a glass sheet 168, having a width that is less than the width of channel 148, can be inserted into channel 148 from the exterior face 112 of replaceable panel set 104x. Glass sheet 168 may be thinner than the backing board 132a inserted in channel 148 in the previous embodiment. A channel 170 can be configured to fit around the
compensating structure 172, which can be a part of or included in channel 148. Structure 172 can be a part of, or coupled to, leg 114c of the frame 102. The channel 170 can mechanically hold the glass sheet 168 in place within channel 148.
In one embodiment where the frame 102 includes a nosing 222, the backing board 132a can be formed of a material yielding enough to allow a nosing 222 to it, but strong enough to hold onto and capture the nosing 222, for example but not limited to, wood, a plastic or other
synthetic. The backing panel set 132 can support the frame 102 coupled to it. The frame 102 can tightly hold the edges 146 of the removable panel set 104x along the border of panel set 104x,as shown in Figs. 2b, 6b, and 8b. In this embodiment the channel 148 and the portion of the frame 102 overlapping onto the interior face 112 of removable panel set 104x can be omitted from frame 102, as shown in Figs. 8b, 10b and l ib.
Figs. 4, 7-9, and 10-11 each include a cross-sectional top or perspective view of replaceable panel set 104x, respectively, showing a small lip 144 of frame 102. The lip 144 extends to sufficiently conceal the edges 146, while maintaining minimal thickness and visibility. The term "conceal," e.g., "concealing an edge," as used herein, refers to covering an edge so that a viewer cannot see any of the unfinished edge.
On the exterior face 112 of the removable panel set 104, the frame lip 144 can extend slightly further than the panel set 104. In one embodiment the lip 144 can extend between 0.125 - 0.25 inches. In one embodiment the frame 102 can flush with and abut the replaceable panel set 104 without extending any further than the removable panel set 104, showing no overhanging lip 144 on its exterior face 112.
On the interior face of panel set 104, the frame lip 144 can flush with the panel set 104 as shown in the figure to the right in Fig. 8b, 10b and 1 lb. In one embodiment, the frame 102 can overlap on the interior face 110 with an "L" shaped profile wrapping to the back of the removable panel set 104, as shown in the left hand Fig. 8a, b, 10a, 10c and 1 la. In one embodiment, the lip 144 can extend from 0.125 inches to 2.5 inches as an overhanging "L" shaped frame 102 on the interior face 110 of removable panel set 104. In one embodiment, the frame 102 can wrap around 0.25 inches over the interior face 110 if the panel set 104.
A casual viewer of storage system 100 may not realize that exterior layer 138 is replaceable, primarily because frame lip 144 substantially conceals edges 146 of layers 132-138. The concealed edges cause exterior layer panel set 138 to appear permanent and nonreplaceable. At least a portion of edges 146 may also be manually inaccessible from the exterior face 112 of replaceable panel set 104x because the frame lip 144 substantially covers and conceals them.
At least one gap 176 is defined between the frame lip 144 and the edges 146 of layers 132- 38. Gap 176 allows exterior layer panel set 138 to be easily removed from and inserted into replaceable panel set 104x. In one embodiment, the lip 144 substantially conceals the edges 146 that define at least two border surfaces of replaceable panel set 104x. In one embodiment, lip 144 of frame 102 substantially conceals the edges 146 on all four sides of the replaceable panel set 104x to the degree that any gap 176 between the frame 102 and replaceable panel set 104x is less than or equal to 1/8ώ inch, so that the layers 132-138 of replaceable panel set 104x are firmly held in place. The gap 176 can be miniscule so that it is impossible for a person to insert his or her finger between panel set 106 and lip 144. In one embodiment, the gap 176 may measure l/32nd inch wide. In one embodiment, gap 176 may measure 1/20ώ inch.
In the present disclosure, the interior face 110 of panel set 104 is adjacent to the storage cavity 108. In one embodiment, the interior face 110 of the replaceable panel set 104x is provided with at least one hole 156 that goes through the backing panel set. To remove exterior layer 138a, one need only push exterior layer 138a out of frame 102 via hole 156, but the frame 102, other panels 104, and backing panel sets 132 can remain in place, necessitating no further disassembly.
In one embodiment, the hole 156 can be round, or another shape, e.g. a square, in another embodiment. A removable plug 174 can plug or cover at least one hole 156 when not in use. The
plug 174 can also act as a protective barrier. In this way, when a door panel set 104z is pulled open or pushed shut, the protective barrier prevents a generation of loud noise and prevents damage to the frame 102, storage system 100, or door.
In one embodiment, the at least one hole 156 can extend through frame 102 and through backing panel set 132, providing an access to push exterior layer panel set 138 out of replaceable panel set 104x. The hole 156 can be located at the midpoint of the length and/or width of the frame 102, and can be located specifically on leg 114c, as shown in Fig. 10. In one embodiment, the at least one hole 156 can be located on leg 114b, as shown in Fig. 2.
Additionally, or alternatively, a hole 156b can be included on the interior face 110 that is not on the frame 102. The hole 156b can extend through the backing panel set 132 and reach the exterior layer panel set 138.
A person can apply a force to the exterior layer panel set 138 through the hole 156. The force can be applied through the one or more holes 156 in the interior of the panel set 104x that may extend through the frame 102 and through the interior 110 face of and through backing panel set 132, and reaching the exterior layer panel set 138.
A person can use his or her finger or a simple implement, for example, but not limited, to a pen, handle of a spoon, a key, or a specialized tool, to apply the force. The applied force disrupts the magnetic force between the first layer with magnetic properties 132b and second layer with magnetic properties 138b, or between the backing panel set 132 and exterior layer panel set 138. Thus, the force decouples the backing panel set 132 and pushes the exterior layer 138 out of the exterior face 112 of replaceable panel set 104x.
To replace the removed exterior layer panel set 138, a new exterior layer panel set 138 can be inserted through the exterior face 112 of replaceable panel set 104x until it rests against
the backing panel set 132, and the lip 144 substantially conceals and blocks access to at least two edges 146 of panel set 104x once again. In one embodiment, the magnetic force between the backing panel set 132 and the exterior layer panel set 138 may couple them together, while frame lip 144 substantially conceals their edges 146. In one embodiment, compensating structure 172 coupled to channel 170 can hold the glass 168 in place within channel 148, as shown in Fig. 9.
In one embodiment, a person can access the exterior layer panel set 138 from the exterior face 112 with a tool, e.g. a crochet hook, that grabs a corner of the exterior layer 138 and pulls it to remove and replace it from the exterior face 112 of replaceable panel set 104x. In one embodiment, there may be a little protrusion attached to the exterior layer 138 that sticks out of the frame 102, that can be pulled out with a tweezers- like tool from the front via the exterior face 112 of replaceable panel set 104x.
One embodiment of this disclosure includes a door panel system embodiment, with replaceable panel set 104x(A) a as one face of a door, and an additional panel set (104x(B) or 104y) serving as the second face of the door, as shown in Figs. 8c and 8d. Any face of the door can include a panel set 104x which includes the replaceable exterior layer set 138. Between the two exterior faces 112 of the door panel set 104x lies a hollow door cavity 152. In one embodiment, the frame 102 and panel set 104 system can be coupled to an appliance door 164 so that the appliance too can match the decor. A hollow cavity 152 can be defined between the appliance door 164 and the replaceable panel set 104x.
In one embodiment shown in Figs. 8c and 8d, both sides of the door can include panel sets 104x (104x(A) and 104x(B)), and each can include a replaceable exterior layer panel set 138. In one embodiment, one side or exterior face 112 of the door can include a replaceable
panel set 104x(A), and the opposing exterior face 112 can include a panel set 104y which does not include a replaceable exterior layer set 138.
At least one hole 156 in the exterior of one of the additional panel sets 104 (e.g. 104x(B) or 104y) provides access to the hollow door cavity 152 of the door. An at least one inner second hole 162 (abutting the hollow door cavity 152) can be provided in the interior face 110 of a replaceable panel set 104x or plain panel set 104y of the door system. Each replaceable panel set 104x of the door system can include at least one each of hole 156, and inner hole 162 (abutting the door cavity 152), to penetrate through layers 132 and access and push out layers 138 of the panel sets 104x.
In one embodiment, the at least one inner second hole 162 can be an extension of the hole 156 in the exterior of the door and can extend through the backing panel set 132. A person can use a finger, simple implement, or specialized tool to initially poke through one or more holes 156 in the exterior of 104x(A), and subsequently through one or more inner holes 162 with the same initial application of a force to push exterior layer panel set 138 out of replaceable panel set 104x(A).
A removable plug 174 can plug or cover each at least one hole 156 when not in use. The plug 174 can also act as a protective barrier for when the door is pulled open or pushed shut, preventing the generation of a loud noise and preventing damage to the frame 102, storage system 100, or door. If plug 174 is disposed on the exterior face 112 of door panel 104z, plug 174 can be elongated to also protect a wall or structure when a person swings the door open.
In one embodiment., the point of access can be at least one hole 156 located, for example, but not limited to, on a top panel set 104y(A) of the door, a bottom panel set 104y(B), or side panel sets 104y(C-D), shown in Figs. 8c-d. A person can use his or her finger, a simple
implement or specialized tool to apply a force to an object 154 in the hollow cavity 152 by poking into the hole 156 located, for example, but not limited to, on one side 104y(C), of the door. The hole 156 may be located on a part of the frame 102 joined with and abutting one of the panel sets 104, such as on the lip 144.
In one embodiment, the hole 156 leads to the object 154 in the hollow door cavity 152 of the door. Upon being pushed via the hole 156, said object 154 can push outward toward one or more holes 162 extending through the backing panel set 132 of one or more panel sets 104x of the door. Object 154 in the hollow cavity 152 can then push exterior layer panel set 138 off of replaceable panel set 104x.
In one embodiment shown in Fig. 8c and 8d, a pin 160 remains in the outer hole 156. When activated by a force pushing pin 160 further into outer hole 156, objects 154 in door cavity 152 or in inner holes 162, can push through inner holes 162, and push out replaceable exterior layer sets 138.
In one embodiment, a pin 160 or bar can have two extensions. The pin 160 extensions can push the object[s] 154 inside inner holejsj 162 reaching removable exterior layer panel set[s] 138, and pushing the exterior layer panel set[s] 138 out. hi another embodiment, a pin 160 or bar can have reverse polar magnets. When pushed in the outer hole 156 by a force, the pin's 160 reverse polar magnets can push object pins 154, situated in door cavity 152, through inner hole[s] 162, against which the exterior layer panel set[s] 138 are sitting. In one embodiment, the pin 160 or bar may have arms or extensions that can be hidden and a part of the pin 160 or bar. When a force pushes or twists the pin 160 into and through the holes 156, the arms or extensions can then extend outward in an active position. The arms extended outward perpendicularly can
push the object[s] 154 pin or bar through the inner hole[s] 162, pushing out the exterior layer panel set[sj 138.
