Description

DESCRIPTION
INTERNAL LEAK LIMITER FOR A PRESSURISED-GAS CONTAINER
Technical field
The present invention relates to an internal leak limiter device to be used in a pressurized-gas container, e.g. a Liquefied Petroleum Gas cartridge, a major feature of which is that it does not require additional components such as springs or plates for its operation as it operates by exploiting the pressure and the underpressure generated by the gas that is stored in the container.
Technical Background
The known technology for manufacturing analogous items has not presented any similar item.
In particular, pierceable pressurized-gas containers exist, for example Liquefied Petroleum Gas cartridges, which can be mounted on various appliances (e.g. stoves etc.). The basic disadvantage of such containers is that if they are dismounted from the appliance while they still contain gas, the gas content may be released to the surrounding atmosphere through the outlet port generated by the appliance. This has negative effects associated with the uncontrolled release of the gas to the surrounding atmosphere, which in the case of Liquefied Petroleum Gas are fire ignition and/or injury of people and damages. Containers also exist that have an internal leak limiter which restricts and/or stops the release of the pressurized gas (e.g. Liquefied Petroleum Gas) when they are disconnected from the appliance or are erroneously mounted.
A basic disadvantage of the above mentioned flow limiters is, that in order to avoid gas release to the surrounding atmosphere, they employ springs and/ or preformed plates and/or metal components positioned in the container, which complicate their manufacture, assembly and installation, dramatically increasing production cost of the final product, with sometimes questionable effectiveness.
All the above disadvantages prompted us to find a solution, the result of which is the object of the present description. Specifically, the present invention avoids all the said disadvantages because the flow limiter of the invention is mounted in the container at its upper part without requiring any springs or plates for its operation. On the contrary, it operates by exploiting the pressure of the contained gas and the underpressure generated at the valve's upper part, thus restricting the outflow from the container in case of container (e.g. cartridge) removal from the appliance. Furthermore, the gas flow limiter of the invention is so sensitive that it operates effectively even when the pressure of the pressurized gas stored in the container is slightly higher than the atmospheric pressure, that is, even when the quantity of the gas still present in the container is small.
Disclosure of the invention
The present invention will be fully understood by those skilled in the present art with reference to the accompanying drawings and figures which depict an example of a specific industrial application of the invention. In particular, Figure 1 according to the invention shows in perspective, side and top view the gas flow limiter valve.
Figure 2 according to the invention, shows in perspective, side and top view the flow limiter-valve assembled with a support frame.
Figure 3 according to the invention, shows the flow limiter mounted on the upper inner part of the container.
Figure 4 according to the invention, shows a cross-section view of the flow limiter with the support frame mounted on the container.
Taking into account an example of an application of the invention, a component list of the valve is given, with reference to the respective numbering of the same parts on the attached drawings/figures. These parts are not in scale but are shown simply in size proportions.
According to the selected application of the invention, the invented flow limiter-valve for a pressurized-gas cartridge is entirely made of a flexible material, and consists of a main body (1) and a movable part (2), which together constitute a single component. The movable part (2) moves independently from the main body (1) due to the flexibility of the manufacturing material.
The main body (1) has a flattened base (3), which is either adhered on the container by using a suitable adhesive, or is mounted on a support frame (7), which is made of metal or other suitable material and has outlet ports (8) for the gas to flow from the container to the appliance. Thereafter, the support frame (7) is welded or mounted on the upper part of the container (5), around its hole (4).
The base (3) has circumferential vent ports (6), through which the gas flows from the container to the appliance. The movable part (2) is enclosed in the main body (1) and executes a controlled vertical motion, allowing or restricting the flow of the gas from the container (5) to the appliance.
In this way, when the container is connected to the appliance, the piercing part of the appliance inlet port penetrates the container (5) wall creating a hole (4). Subsequently it pushes downwards the movable part (2) of the flow limiting valve to allow the flow of gas from the container (5) through the vent ports (6) and/or the outlet ports (8) to the appliance.
If the appliance is disconnected from the container (5), while the container still contains gas, since the pressure in the container (5) is higher than the outer atmospheric one, the movable part (2) of the flow limiter-valve, being pushed by the pressure generated by the gas moving towards the hole (4) of the container (5) in conjunction with the underpressure generated at the upper part, moves upwards, obstructing the hole (4) of the container (5) and prevents the uncontrolled release of gas from the container (5) to the atmosphere.
Alternatively, the flow limiter of the invention may be manufactured from any suitable material or a combination of materials, the main body (1) and the movable part (2) not necessarily constituting a single body but separate parts.
It must be understood that the object of the invention is not limited to the above example. The materialization of the invention can also be achieved with other manufacturing methods/ technics and components within the scope of the present invention.
