Abstract

Disclosed is a method for preparing a sol-gel composition comprising the steps of dissolving from 100 vol % to 10 vol % of at least one first alkoxysilane precursor and from 0 vol% to 90 vol% of at least one second alkoxysilane precursor in a solvent having a Dimoth-Reichart solvatochromism parameter (E T ) between 170-205 kJ/mol to form a reaction medium; catalyzing the reaction medium to form a sol-gel product; aging the sol-gel product to cause syneresis of the sol-gel product; rinsing the sol-gel product using a solution of an acid in an organic solvent to form a sol-gel composition, with the caveat that the acid solution is not a hydrofluoric acid solution; and removing organic solvent or, alternatively, rinsing the sol-gel product using supercritical solvent extraction.
