Neonatal jaundice results from the predisposition to bilirubin production by the newborn (NB) and its ability to excrete it vide (DL Wong, Pediatric Nursing, 5th ed. Rio de Janeiro, Ed. Guanabara (1999); TWR Hansen, Therapeutic Approaches to Neonatal Jaundice: An International Survey, Clinical Pediatrics 35, 6, 309-16 (1996); L. Klielmann, P. Nohama, Evaluation of phototherapy equipment in the treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in Curitiba Maternities, II Latin American Congress of Ingeniería Biomédica; 23 to 25 May 2001. La Habana, Cuba; JV de Oliveira, Technical Evaluation of the phototherapy devices of the neonatology service of the South Wing Regional Hospital, Monografia (Pediatric Residence), Asa Sul Regional Hospital / SES / DF, (2006). About sixty percent of newborns are estimated to have serum bilirubin levels greater than 5 mg / dl, and their etiology is typically multifactorial. Fortunately, simple blue light phototherapy (400-500 nm, peak at 460 nm) is the most commonly used therapeutic procedure in the treatment of this condition and aims, above all, for the rapid reduction of serum bilirubin levels of newborns. In Brazil, according to DAT ASUS, in 2011 (Department of Informatics of SUS - DATASUS Ministry of Health. Available at: http://www2.datasus.gov.br/datasus/index.php?acao=l l & id = 30730. Accessed in June 2013) of the Ministry of Health, 1,839,220 Brazilian newborns have jaundice in their first days of life, with 293,371 newborns exposed to phototherapeutic treatments. Of these, 8% in the Midwest, 11 1% in the North, 13% in the South, 29% in the Northeast and 39% in the Southeast.
Owa, O.J. Adebami, F.F. Fadero, T.M. Lee, C.C.H. Maisells, Neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia and kernicterus - not gone but sometimes forgotten, Early Human Development 85, 1 1, 727-732 (2009)).  Also according to DATASUS 201 1, neonatal mortality associated with neonatal hyperbilirubinemia and its complications is 0.1%, but may reach, according to world statistics see (Design Revolution Available at: http://www.d-rev.org. Access in June 2013), up to 10% in less developed regions. Associated with these figures, also according to the medical literature, see (JA Owa, OJ Adebami, FF Fadero, TM Slusher, Irradiance Readings of Phototherapy Equipment: Nigeria, The Indian Journal of Pediatrics 8, 996-998 (2011); RK Pejaver, J. Lee, C.C.H. Chan, Dose-response relationship of phototherapy for seasonal affective disorder: meta-analysis, Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica 99, 5, 315-323 (1999)), the light intensity (irradiance) that affects the newborn is one of the main factors influencing the quality of phototherapeutic treatment with blue light. Inefficiency or lack of phototherapeutic treatment results in a progressive increase in serum bilirubin levels in the newborn, which in turn can lead to sequelae such as secondary autism, deafness, blindness, brain damage and, most severe, kernicterus and death. , see (MJ Maisells, Neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia and kernicterus - not gone but sometimes forgotten, Early Human Development 85, 11, 727-732 (2009)).
Consequentemente, aumenta a morbi-mortalidade em neonatos e em alguns países, como a índia, vide (Investigators of the National Neonatal Perinatal Database -NNPD, Morbidity and Mortality among Outborn Neonates at 10 Tertiary Care Institutions in índia During the Year 2000, Journal of Tropical Pediatrics 50, 3, 170-174 (2004)), as sequelas decorrentes da hiperbilirrubinemia neonatal representam até 30% dos casos de morbidade infantil.  In other words, the newborns' poor positioning in relation to the blue light sources makes the phototherapy treatment less effective to control jaundice, increasing, for example, the chances of sequelae resulting from this pathology. Coupled with this finding about the misplacement of newborns, it is noteworthy that small variations in the positioning of the newborn in relation to the focus of phototherapy sources can result in losses of more than 20% of irradiance in the newborn. Consequently, it increases morbidity and mortality in neonates and in some countries, such as India, see (Investigators of the National Perinatal Neonatal Database - NNPD, Morbidity and Mortality among Outborn Neonates at 10 Tertiary Care Institutions in India During the Year 2000, Journal of Tropical Pediatrics 50, 3, 170-174 (2004)), the sequelae resulting from neonatal hyperbilirubinemia represent up to 30% of cases of infant morbidity.
Due to the harm caused by the poor positioning of the NB in front of the blue light sources, the need for the development of easy-to-handle phototherapy devices accessible to low-income hospitals is justified, whose operating principle and utility favor the proper positioning of the device. Jaundiced RN against lighting from phototherapy sources, with the aim of minimizing adverse events, promoting better illumination conditions of the NB and positive interventions, and ultimately helping to assist healthcare professionals in decision-making in home environments, incubators, maternity hospitals, hospitals, pediatric units and intensive care units.
