Abstract

L'invention concerne des procédés pour préconditionner et/ou conférer une neuroprotection au système nerveux central animal contre les effets d'une ischémie, d'un traumatisme, d'un empoisonnement métallique et d'une neurodégénérescence comprenant les troubles cognitifs, comportementaux et physiques associés. Les patients pour lesquels on a diagnostiqué ou qui présentent un risque de présenter certaines maladies ou certains troubles qui sont associés à un risque d'ischémie cérébrale peuvent en tirer des bénéfices, par exemple ceux présentant un risque pour la maladie d'Alzheimer, la maladie de Parkinson, la dégénérescence cortico-basale, la maladie de Wilson ou un accident vasculaire cérébral ou des patients présentant une lésion à la tête ou à la moelle épinière. Des agents thérapeutiques intranasaux sont administrés au tiers supérieur de la cavité nasale pour contourner la barrière hémato-encéphalique et accéder directement au système nerveux central pour éviter des effets secondaires non souhaités et potentiellement létaux. Les agents thérapeutiques comprennent des substances qui interagissent avec le fer et/ou le cuivre, telles que des agents de chélation du fer, des agents de chélation du cuivre et des antioxydants. Un exemple particulier de ces agents thérapeutiques est l'agent de chélation du fer déféroxamine (DFO).
