Definitions

  • the invention relates to building finishes; more particularly a floor covering system.
  • Laminate timber floors have long been in use because of their favourable qualities. Presently however, there are concerns for the source and expense of timber for this purpose. Hence modern floor coverings are designed to reduce timber use while maintaining an aesthetic satisfaction.
  • the invention provides a composite floor covering formed from interlocking laminate panels comprising panels that are structured to be waterproof and/or termite proof in areas where those influences are prevalent, and panels which are of different materials in other areas
  • the floor coverings in the practice of the invention are in the form of planks and panels and preferably have their longitudinal edges formed so that adjacent panels interlock.
  • the floor covering product according to the invention need not only have a single protective area but may have two or more areas provided against the same or different damaging influence. Any areas that require less protection will use other floor coverings.
  • the upper layer of the panels preferably includes a decorative layer with a printed image for a consistent visual outlook.
  • the protection provided by the covering may arise from the composition of the floor layer or of an intermediate or another layer of a laminate product.
  • the present invention in which it describes floor covering system, comprising a combination of different floor panels one having waterproof and/or termite proof properties and another having different properties, both panels having the consistent visual appearance.
  • the floor panels that are structured to be waterproof and/or termite-proof are place in areas where water and/or termite influences are prevalent.
  • the panel is waterproof by means of a non- porus surface layer and core structure materials.
  • the panel is termite-proof by means of a core structure of non-consumable materials.
  • combination is assembled on a sheet underlay.
  • the combination is assembled by mechanical jointing and/or by use of adhesives.

  • the combination of floor panels provides for targeted protection to areas where areas of damaging influences are prevalent, such as water and termites; and the use of panels having different structure in other areas.
  • the panels are structured to be waterproof by means of non-porus materials. This structure may also be used for termite-proof purposes as the materials are not comsumable. In another embodiment, panels which are resistant to other forms of damage may be structured to comprise of materials suitable for any one or a combination of damaging influences to floor coverings.
  • the different laminate panels are manufactured with a printed image a decorative layer.
  • the waterproof panels may be laid at the threshold towards wet areas (2), or directly applied in wet areas (3). Examples of wet areas may be kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and so forth. Areas to which water supply and use may be prevalent. The remaining floor areas are made up of floor covering panels having a different structure (4).
  • FIG. 2 Another layout of protective panels is demonstrated.
  • protective panels are laid to form a barrier.

  • Various underlay sheets may be applied here such as foam sheet, damp proof membrane or cork.
  • the underlay functions to reduce minor imperfections in the sub-floor, to reduce sound transmittance, and to soften the feel when the floor is trafficked on.
