Description
Payment card comprising a visual security code.
DESCRIPTION
This application relates to the area of payment cards, particularly the securing of the visual security code printed on the payment card itself.
As part of online electronic transactions, particularly on websites, payment can be made by means of the numbers of the payment card coupled with a visual security code, generally a three-digit code, present on the back of said payment card.
The security code is generally printed in clear text on the back of the payment card and can only be obtained by visual contact, so that all the information required for carrying out electronic transactions, such as the number and date of validity of the payment card and the identity of the holder of said payment card, does not have to be grouped within a storage means such as a magnetic stripe and/or a microchip. Thus, a fraudulent user, who has by some means obtained the number and date of validity of the payment card and the identity of the holder of said payment card, can easily obtain the visual security code through visual contact or by seeing the code.
Thus, one of the aims of this invention is to remedy at least in part the drawbacks of the prior art and propose a payment card with a secure visual security code and an associated manufacturing method.
Thus, this invention relates to a payment card comprising a visual security code, wherein said payment card comprises a device for hiding said visual security code, wherein said hiding device comprises thermochromic ink. The presence of the device for hiding the security code 9 makes access to the code secure. In order to see the visual security code, it is not merely necessary to look at
the payment card, but one must also be able to handle it and heat the thermochromic ink in order to reveal the security code.
In a preferred embodiment, the thermochromic ink may be selected so that its colour change temperature is higher than the average temperature of the geographical region in which the card is intended to be used. The thermochromic ink may have a colour change temperature between 27 and 33°C.
In a particular embodiment, the hiding device may be printing with thermochromic ink that is opaque below its colour change temperature to cover the visual security code printed at an earlier stage, wherein said thermochromic ink becomes translucent when its colour change temperature is exceeded. The hiding device may be a sticker with thermochromic ink that is opaque below its colour change temperature and becomes translucent when its colour change temperature is exceeded. The sticker with thermochromic ink may be fixed permanently.
In another embodiment of the invention, the hiding device may be a background in thermochromic ink with, at a temperature below its colour change temperature, a colour identical to that of the visual security code printed on said background, wherein said thermochromic ink changes from its colour below the colour change temperature to a colour that contrasts with the colour in which the visual security code is printed when its colour change temperature is exceeded.
The hiding device may be a coloured background applied on the payment card and the visual security code is printed in thermochromic ink with a colour below its colour change temperature that is identical to that of said background, wherein said thermochromic ink changes from its colour below the colour change temperature to a colour that contrasts with the colour of the background when its colour change temperature is exceeded.
This invention also relates to a method for manufacturing a payment card comprising a security code, wherein said method comprises a step of putting in place a device for hiding said visual security code, wherein said hiding device comprises thermochromic ink.
In a preferred embodiment, the step for putting in place the device for hiding said visual security code may be a step of printing with thermochromic ink that is opaque below its colour change temperature to cover the visual security code printed at an earlier stage, wherein said thermochromic ink becomes translucent when its colour change temperature is exceeded.
In another embodiment, the step for putting in place the device for hiding said visual security code may be a step of applying, on said visual security code printed at an earlier stage, a sticker comprising thermochromic ink that is opaque below its colour change temperature and becomes translucent when its colour change temperature is exceeded.
In another embodiment, the step for putting in place a device for hiding said visual security code may comprise:
- a first step of printing a coloured background in thermochromic ink that has an opaque colour below its colour change temperature, and
- a second step of printing, on said coloured background, the visual security code in a colour identical to the colour of the coloured background below the colour change temperature of the thermochromic ink.
Said thermochromic ink may change to a colour that contrasts with the colour in which the visual security code is printed when its colour change temperature is exceeded.
In another embodiment, the step for putting in place a device for hiding said visual security code may comprise:
- a first step of printing a coloured background on the payment card, and
- a second step of printing, on the coloured background, said visual security code in thermochromic ink with a colour below its colour change temperature that is identical to the colour of said background,
Said thermochromic ink can change from its ambient temperature colour to a colour that contrasts with the colour of the background when its colour change temperature is exceeded.
Other characteristics and benefits of the invention will become clearer in the description below, provided as an illustrative and non-limitative example, and the attached drawings, where:
figure 1 is a schematic representation of the underside of a payment card with the visual security code hidden,
figure 2 is a schematic representation of the underside of the payment card of figure 1 with the visual security code revealed.
Identical elements in all the figures are designated by the same reference numbers. Figures 1 and 2 are schematic representations of the underside of a payment card
1. That underside of the payment card 1 may comprise a magnetic stripe 3 and digital information 5. The top side (not illustrated) of the payment card 1 may bear the number of the payment card 1 (generally made up of sixteen digits), the surname and given name of the holder and the date of validity of said payment card 1.
The payment card 1 also comprises a visual security code 9 generally printed on the underside. That visual security code 9 is used as a security means in order to identify the payment card 1 during online electronic transactions to supplement information such as the number and date of validity of the payment card 1 and the identity of the holder. The payment card 1 also comprises a hiding device 7 in order to hide the visual security code 9 by default.
The hiding device 7 particularly comprises thermochromic ink. That thermochromic ink hides the visual security code 9 by default, and in order to reveal said code, positive action by the user is required. Such action is particularly the heating of said thermochromic ink so that the ink changes colour and thus reveals the visual security code 9. The action may thus for example be the placing of the user's finger on the area in which the visual security code 9 is printed.
Thermochromic inks are inks that have at least two states or two colours depending on the temperature. Below the transition temperature, thermochromic ink has a first colour. Above the transition temperature, the ink has a second colour. With some inks, the ink state changes between a transparent state and an opaque state.
The thermochromic ink is advantageously selected so that its colour change temperature is greater than the average temperature of the geographical region in which the card is intended to be used. The average temperatures in equatorial and tropical geographical regions are higher and thus the thermochromic ink used for a hiding device 7 in such regions must have a colour change temperature that is higher than that of the thermochromic ink used in a more temperature geographical region, where the average temperature is lower. That thermochromic ink is reversible, that is to say that when its temperature drops below its colour change temperature, the colour of said thermochromic ink goes back to its original colour.
Preferably and in order for the thermochromic ink to change colours due to the user's body heat, particularly one of the user's fingers, the thermochromic ink used has a colour change temperature ranging between 27 and 33°C.
In order to increase the time for the colour of the thermochromic ink to go back to a colour that hides the visual security code 9, it may be advantageous to use ink with a colour change temperature that is relatively low (and yet sufficiently high to not change colours at the ambient temperature). Thus, when a holder gives their card for payment in a store, restaurant or other establishment and the merchant or waiter leaves with the card, for example to go to a payment terminal, it is possible to verify if an
attempt has been made to see the visual security code, which would remain visible when merchant or waiter comes back with the card.
In a first embodiment, the hiding device 7 is printing with thermochromic ink that is opaque below its colour change temperature to cover the visual security code 9 printed at an earlier stage on the payment card 1. When the colour change temperature of the thermochromic ink is exceeded, the ink becomes translucent and reveals the visual security code 9. In a second embodiment, the hiding device 7 is a sticker comprising thermochromic ink that is opaque below its colour change temperature. As before, when the colour change temperature of the thermochromic ink is exceeded, the ink becomes translucent and so does the sticker, which thus reveals the visual security code 9. In order to retain a satisfactory security level, the sticker with thermochromic ink is advantageously fixed permanently on the payment card 1.
In a third embodiment, the hiding device is a background applied in thermochromic ink on the payment card. Below its colour change temperature, the colour of the thermochromic ink is identical to that of the visual security code 9 printed on said background. As a result, below the colour change temperature of the thermochromic ink, the visual security code 9 and the background are indistinguishable and said visual security code 9 is invisible.
When the colour change temperature is exceeded, the thermochromic ink of the background changes to a colour that contrasts with the colour in which the visual security code is printed, and the security code is thus revealed.
In a fourth embodiment, the hiding device is a coloured background applied on the payment card. The visual security code is printed on said background in thermochromic ink with a colour below its colour change temperature that is identical to the colour of said background. As a result, below the colour change temperature of the
thermochromic ink, the visual security code 9 and the background are indistinguishable and said visual security code 9 is invisible.
When its colour change temperature is exceeded, the thermochromic ink of the visual security code changes to a colour that contrasts with the colour in which the background is printed, and the security code is thus revealed.
This invention also relates to a method for manufacturing a payment card 1 comprising a device 7 for hiding the visual security code 9.
The method for manufacturing the payment card 1 is standard and known to the person skilled in the art up to the steps for the graphics personalisation of the payment card 1, that is to say where information such as the number and date of validity of the payment card 1, the identity of the holder and the security code is printed on the payment card 1.
The manufacturing method thus comprises a step of putting in place a device 7 for hiding the visual security code 9, wherein said hiding device 7 comprises thermochromic ink.
In a first embodiment, the step of putting in place a device 7 for hiding the visual security code 9 is a step of applying thermochromic ink that is opaque below its colour change temperature by printing it on the payment card 1. The printing covers the visual security code 9 printed in an earlier step. When the colour change temperature of the thermochromic ink is exceeded, the ink becomes translucent and reveals the visual security code 9.
In a second embodiment, the step for putting in place the device 7 for hiding the visual security code 9 is a step of applying, on said visual security code 9 printed at an earlier stage, a sticker comprising thermochromic ink that is opaque below its colour change temperature.
When the colour change temperature of the thermochromic ink is exceeded, the ink becomes translucent and so does the sticker, which thus reveals the visual security code 9. In order to retain a satisfactory security level, the sticker with thermochromic ink is advantageously fixed permanently on the payment card 1.
In a third embodiment, the step for putting in place a device 7 for hiding the visual security code 9 comprises:
- a first step of printing a coloured background in thermochromic ink that has an opaque colour below its colour change temperature, and
- a second step of printing, on said coloured background, the visual security code 9 in a colour identical to the colour of the coloured background below its colour change temperature.
The thermochromic ink changes to a colour that contrasts with the colour of printing of the visual security code 9 when its colour change temperature is exceeded.
In a fourth embodiment, the step for putting in place a device 7 for hiding the visual security code 9 comprises:
- a first step of printing a coloured background using standard ink on the payment card, and
- a second step of printing, on the coloured background, the visual security code 9 in thermochromic ink with a colour below its colour change temperature that is identical to the colour of said background, The thermochromic ink used changes from its ambient temperature colour to a colour that contrasts with the colour of the background when its colour change temperature is exceeded.
Thus, it can be seen that thanks to the presence of the device 7 for hiding the visual security code 9, access to the code is made secure. In order to see the visual security code 9, it is not merely necessary to look at the payment card 1, but one must
also be able to handle it and heat the theraiochromic ink in order to reveal the security code 9.
