Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a spout for a fuel container, e.g. a "Jerrycan", and particularly a spout with a self-closing mechanism and capacity to stop automatically when a receiving vessel or tank is full.
  • a conventional fuel container such as that known in the United Kingdom as a "Jerrycan” typically includes a removable spout which provides a simple narrowed aperture for directing fuel into a tank or the like, e.g. via a narrow opening into the petrol tank of a motor vehicle. Jerrycans are often used when additional fuel must be carried by the vehicle, beyond the normal volume of the fuel tank. Furthermore, portable fuel containers are often used in domestic situations, e.g. for refuelling of a lawn mower or other similar device.
  • a common problem associated with pouring fuel from a Jerrycan is that of inconsistent flow due to the restricted passageway and, additionally, the difficulty in gauging when the receiving tank is almost full, which can result in an overflow that is messy and dangerous for the user.
  • WO96/33102 describes an elaborate pour spout arrangement including a vent locking device able to close when the container is tipped beyond a certain angle. In other respects it is believed that this device cannot perform in the simple and reliable way intended by the present invention.
  • the present invention seeks to provide a spout for a fuel container that is easily closable and also provides a relatively uniform flow of fuel when the container is up-ended for use.
  • the invention provides a spout for a fuel container including a fluid outlet end and a conduit element about which a sleeve is slidable between a first and second position, said conduit including an opening that is alignable with an opening in a sidewall of the sleeve, such that when the sleeve is moved to the second position and the openings are aligned, an airway is opened between a space external of the spout and a space internal of the fuel container in use.
  • the sleeve could be, in an alternative form, a tab-like slidable element preferably including an abutment surface with an opening in its sidewall in order to open communication to the air channel.
  • the conduit element is preferably comprised of two or more components, e.g. an air channel and a fluid channel, preferably in the form of a fluid pipe with an air pipe located therewithin, preferably coaxially.
  • the air pipe is mounted by an end connection with the fluid pipe and slidably mounted to an inner sleeve associated with the main outer sleeve.
  • the airway within the conduit provided to communicate with an opening in a sidewall of the sleeve and effectively upstream of the fluid outlet end of the spout, provides a means of reducing the back pressure within the fuel container as fuel flows out of the spout. As such, flow from the spout is more consistent than would otherwise be possible where no airway is present.
  • An opening in the side of the sleeve/internal conduit is preferable to an air inlet located at the distal end of the spout (co-terminus with the fuel outlet) because fuel itself cannot inhibit airflow into the passageway.
  • the opening on the side of the sleeve also provides an automatic shut-off feature for fuel flow, since when fuel reaches the level of the opening (located close to but upstream of the fuel outlet), then, since the fuel container is otherwise sealed, hydrostatic pressure prevents further fluid/fuel being dispensed.
  • the conduit includes a stem portion with a stopper means for cooperation with an opening of the sleeve (the fluid outlet end), forming a closure therewith.
  • the stopper effectively self-closes the spout.

  • Figure 6 illustrates a frontal perspective view of the outer sleeve of the spout.
  • FIG. 1 provides a general illustration of a spout 10 for use with a fuel container, i.e. a Jerrycan which is not pictured, according to the invention. It will be apparent that the spout is of a generally cylindrical shape, however, other cross sectional shapes could be possible.

  • FIGs 3 and 5 best illustrate the conduit component 12 which serves to direct fuel from the inside of a Jerrycan, via a channel or fluid pipe 16, towards a fuel outlet end F of the spout. • air pipe 17 is mounted at end connection 13 which secures the air pipe 17 coaxially with fluid pipe 16. Additional spokes could be used to locate the air pipe coaxially if necessary.

  • Air communication is possible by virtue of an opening 18 visible on the outer sleeve which is alignable, when the sleeve is retracted against a spring bias, with an opening 19 formed into the air pipe 17.
  • Figures 4 and 5 in fact show two aligning pairs of openings 18/19 on the respective sleeve and conduit components 11/12.
  • Figures 4 and 6 show detail of the inner sleeve 23 which receives the stem end 15 of the air pipe 17 and guides alignment of the openings 18/19.
  • sleeve 23 is supported by radial extensions 24 through which openings 18 are formed.
  • Fuel (F) is able to flow around spokes 24 and, by virtue of internal sleeve 23, is unlikely to interfere with airway 17.
  • o-ring seals 25 located within annular channels 26 in the outer surface of air pipe 17 provide a sealing function upstream and downstream of the opening 19, against inner sleeve 23. In this way leakage is avoided of fuel and vapour out of opening 19, both in a closed state (shown by Figures 1 to 3) and when the openings 18/19 are aligned for dispense.
  • a further set of o-rings 25 are provided within an annular groove 27 formed in the surface of fluid pipe 16 upstream of its fluid outlet end 28, where it is in contact with an inner wall of outer sleeve 11. This seal arrangement prevents fuel and/or vapour from leaking from the outer sleeve 11 in the vicinity of abutment 22.
  • O-rings may be made from any suitable material which is durable and leak resistant for petroleum products. Examples include NBR or Viton ® .
  • the spout when fuel is required, the spout is attached to a Jerrycan by an appropriate means (e.g. a bayonet fitting/clip).
  • the outer sleeve 11 of the spout has an abutment portion or annular protrusion 20 which is abutted against a neck or opening of a vessel/tank to be filled.
  • Pressure applied by the user causes a biasing means, e.g. a spring (not seen) located within a cavity 21 ( Figure 3), to compress. Accordingly, outer sleeve 11 is moved in the direction of arrow A which disengages stopper 14 from its seal against the fuel outlet end of sleeve 11.
  • the spout When a desired amount of fuel has been dispensed the spout can be withdrawn, disengaging the annular abutment 20 from the tank opening, resulting in expansion of the spring and subsequent reengagement of the stopper 14 against the mouth of the spout/sleeve 11, thereby causing an automatic closure during withdrawal of the spout from the vessel.
  • the filling operation is preferably semi-automated by the use of an abutment (20) to engage with an opening of the tank, however, alternative structures could be contemplated or, indeed, be performed manually by gripping and sliding the sleeve between first and second positions.
  • a completely surrounding sleeve 11 component may be replaced by a tab device, slidable relative to the conduit portion of the spout, that otherwise performs an equivalent function.
  • a slidable tab is shown as a general concept by the dotted detail pictured in Figure 2. It still includes an abutment portion 20 enabling it to be pressed against a biasing spring to slide in a channel (not shown) between first and second positions.
  • the essential function is to be able to align an opening on the side of the device with an opening to an airway communicating with the inside of the fuel container.
  • the spout of the present invention is able to be manufactured from available techniques and materials. It is expected that the spout will be moulded from a suitable fuel-resistant plastic or like material. Abstract
