Abstract

The present invention is a construction toy set comprised of various planar basic pieces square, rectangles, pentagons, hexagons, rhombus, which on their sides have appropriate slots (2) and of planar circular connectors (5). All basic pieces have equal thickness (p.) and all slots (2) which are located on the sides of basic pieces are of equal depth (k) and equal width (w) and are perpendicular both to the surface of the basic piece as well as to the side of the basic piece at which are located. The planar circular connectors (5) have thickness (w) equal to the width (w) of the slots (2) of basic pieces and diameter (d) equal to two times the depth (k) of the slot of basic pieces plus the thickness (p) of the basic pieces. The connection of basic pieces to each other is done with the insertion of a circular connector (5) into one slot (2) of one basic piece and next of the same connector (5) into one slot (2) of another basic piece. In every one planar circular connector (5) can be connected more than two basic pieces and even forming any angle. With the connection of basic pieces three dimensional structures are created.

Description

Construction toy set of planar pieces and separate connectors
The present invention belongs to the sector of construction toy sets, and particularly to such construction toy sets which are comprised of pieces at a plurality of polygonal shapes which can be connected with one another to form various constructions.
The most popular type of such construction toy sets are those where the various pieces have pins and corresponding- in holes for connecting with each other like those presented in U.S. 3,034,254, in U.S. 3,566,531 and in U.S. 4,874,341. There is also a smaller number of construction toy sets and of constructions, where the basic pieces are connected with each other with various, typically complicated, connectors like those presented in U.S. 5,545,070 and in U.S. 4,712,336. The main technical problems that construction toy sets of this type present, are that most of those toys have a limited number of combinations and directions at which the pieces which comprise the toy can be connected to each other, but also in all those construction toy sets in the case where two pieces are connected to each other it is not possible to connect a third or more pieces at the same connecting element, Finally in the case where many pieces of those toys are connected in a row, it is not possible to remove a middle piece without affecting all the remaining pieces. Due to the above mentioned technical problems, toys of the present state of the art have the disadvantage of offering to the user a limited number of final constructions which can be build with those construction toy sets.
The present invention offers a solution to the above mentioned technical problems. In short, it consists a construction toy set which is consisting of planar basic pieces which can have a plurality of shapes and which pieces have on their sides appropriate slots.
All basic pieces of the present invention, have the same thickness but they can have any shape, as long as they have at least at one of their side one or more slots, which slots are perpendicular both to the surface of the basic piece as well as to the side of the basic piece, so that they can be connected to another basic piece with the use of a connector. The pieces are, connected with each other with the use of connectors which have the shape of a planar circular disk. The planar circular connectors are inserted into the slots which are at the sides of the basic pieces and connect the basic pieces together in a way that the surface of the connectors is perpendicular to the surface of the basic pieces. The width of each connector equals the width of the slots which are at the sides of the basic pieces, while the diameter of each connector relates to the depth of the slots and the width of the basic pieces.
Main differentiation from all the other construction toy sets of the present state of the art which comprise pieces that can be connected to eacrr other and which have at least one male site and at least one female side, is that at the described construction toy set there is a separation so that all the connectors represent the male site and all basic pieces represent the female side. Also due to the simplicity of the shape of the connector and the way that basic pieces are attached to each connector, the addition or the removal of a basic piece does not affect the connection between other basic pieces which- are attached to the same connector.
Main advantage of the present invention is that the basic pieces present autonomy, since it is possible to remove a middle basic piece without affecting the remaining pieces of the structure. Another advantage that the present invention offers is that it allows basic pieces to be connected towards all directions when placed around a connecting disc. Also, the circular shape of the connecting disc allows to more than two basic pieces to fit and to be connected to the same disc, forming by choice different angles to one another. Thus the present invention offers the possibility of unlimited combinations and directions at which the basic pieces which comprise the toy can be connected, and at the same time autonomy of the pieces which comprise a structure, since it allows the addition and removal of individual pieces.
Finally, the simplicity of the basic pieces and of the connector present a significant advantage of the presented invention since that makes the production of the basic pieces and the connectors particularly simple and low cost and thus increasing the commercial value of the invention.

Drawing 16 shows examples of other shapes which basic pieces can take, such as a rectangle with openings on one side resembling a battlement of a castle (Fig. 16a), a rectangle (Fig. 16b), a regular hexagon (Fig. 16c), a rhombus (Fig. 16d) or a shape like the side of a car (Fig. 16d), which basic pieces have one or more slots on their sides according to the present invention.
Drawing 17 shows two examples of three dimensional structures, a castle (Fig. 17a) and a car (Fig. 17b), which can be constructed by connecting together with the use of connectors basic pieces of various shapes according to the present invention.
Follows a detailed description of the invention with an application example and with reference to the attached drawings.
As shown in Drawings 1, 2 and 3, the basic piece (1) is square and flat and has on each side two slots (2) which are perpendicular both to the top surface of the basic piece (1) as well as to the surfaces of its sides and extend to the full thickness of the basic piece (1). The square basic piece (1) has a side length of s and a thickness of p, each slot (2) has a width of w and a depth of k, the distance between the two slots (2) and (2) which are on the same side of the basic piece (1) is m, while the two slots (2) and (2) which are on the same side of the basic piece (1) have equal distances n from the edges of the side of the basic piece (1) on which they are located.
As shown in Drawing 4, the connector (5) is flat with a circular disk shape, the thickness w of the connector (5) equals the width w of the slots (2) which are on the sides of basic piece (1), so that the connectors fit into the slots on the sides of the basic piece, while the diameter (d) of the connector (5) equals the thickness (p) of the basic piece (1) plus two times the depth k of all slots (2) of basic piece. In other words, diameter (d) of each connector (5) equals to 2k+p.
As shown in Drawings 5 and 6, the connection of the basic pieces (1) to each other is done by inserting a circular connector (5) into a slot (2) of one basic piece (1) and then the same connector (5) into a slot (2) of another basic piece (1). Drawings 5 and 6 show the case where planar square basic pieces (1) are connected to each other on the same plane with the use of connectors (5), which connectors (5) have been inserted into opposed slots (2) of basic pieces (1) in a way that the connectors (5) are perpendicular to the surface of the basic pieces (1). When a connector (5) connects two basic pieces (1) which are on the same plane, by been inserted into two opposed slots (2) and to the full depth k of each slot, between the basic pieces (1) remains a gap which equals to the thickness of the basic piece (1). This characteristic allows next more basic pieces to be connected with the same connectors as it is shown in Drawings 9, 10 and 11.
As shown in Drawings 7 and 8, two square basic pieces (1) are connected to each other with the use of two connectors (5), in a way that the surfaces of the basic pieces (1) form either a right angle (Drawing 7) or any random angle φ to each other (Drawing 8), while the connectors (5) are always perpendicular to the surface of each basic piece (1).
As shown in Drawings 9 and 10, three square basic pieces (1) are connected together with the use of two connectors (5), in a way that the surfaces of the basic pieces (1) form either right angles (Drawing 9) or any random angles φΐ and φ2 to each other (Drawing 10), while the connectors (5) are always perpendicular to the surface of each basic piece (1). Also, as shown in Drawings 9 and 10 it is possible the connection of more than two basic pieces (1) with the use of only two connectors (5).
As shown in Drawing 11 , four square basic pieces (1) are connected together with the use of only two connectors (5), the surfaces of the basic pieces (1) form right angles to each other while the connectors (5) are always perpendicular to the surface of each basic piece (1).
Drawings 12 and 13 present two other shapes of the basic pieces of the present invention, basic piece (6) which has the shape of an equilateral triangle (Drawing 12), and basic piece (9) which has the shape of a normal pentagon (Drawing 13). The length s of each side of basic pieces with the triangular shape (6) and the pentagon shape (9) equals to the length s of the square basic piece (1) and the thickness p of those two basic pieces (6) and (9) equals to the thickness p of the square basic piece (1). Similarly to the square basic piece (1), both the triangle (6) and pentagon (9) basic piece have on each of their sides two perpendicular slots (2) and (2), which slots are perpendicular to the sides of basic pieces (6) and (9), have width w and depth k, equal to the width w and the depth k of the slots (2) of the square basic piece (1), the distance between the slots (2) and (2), is m and the two slots (2) and (2) have equal distances n from the edges of the sides of basic pieces (6) and (9).
That match on the design- of basic pieces (1, 6 and 9), namely the match of the length of the side which is s, the number of slots (2) per side which is two slots (2) per side, and the position of the two slots (2) in similar points on the sides of all basic pieces(l, 6 and 9) has as a result when two basic pieces, regardless of the shape of those basic pieces, either square (1), or triangular (6), or pentagonal (9), are placed side by side, the two slots- (2) and (2) which are on the side of the first basic block will face perfectly the two slots (2) and (2) which are on the side of the second basic piece so that next the circular connector (5) is inserted vertically into the opposed slots (2) and (2) and connects the basic pieces to each other, so that complicated three dimensional structures are created.
As shown in Drawing 14, a plurality of square basic pieces (1) with the respective connectors (5) create a three dimensional structure which has the shape of a ball where again is shown the ability which the present invention offers the basic pieces (1) to be connected to each other forming various angles to each other.
For reasons of stability and also of simplicity of the structures created by the present invention the optimum number of slots (2) which must have the basic pieces (1), (6) and (9) per side is two slots per side. Fewer than two slots (2) per side of basic pieces (1), (6) and (9) reduces the stability of the structures while the presence of more than two slots (2) per side of basic pieces (1, 6 and 9) increases the number of connectors
(5) required to connect together the basic pieces (1), (6) and (9) without necessarily increasing the stability of the structures.
The optimum position of the two slots (2) per side of basic pieces (1),
(6) and (9) is where the distance m between the two slots (2) and (2) and the distance n that each slot (2) and (2) have to the edges of the sides of the basic pieces (1), (6) and (9) are about equal.
In some cases of basic pieces according to the present invention where the size of the basic piece is very large, it is possible to have more than two slots (2) per side, while on the other hand, is some cases of basic pieces either because the size of the basic piece is small, or the shape and the way that a particular basic piece should be connected in a particular way, there could'be only one slot (2) per side of basic piece.
Drawing 15 shows an example of an application according to the present invention, a basic piece (12) with a shape of human face, a basic piece (13) with the shape of a human torso, two basic pieces (14) with a shape of human arm, and two basic pieces (15) with a shape of human leg, are connected with respective connectors (5) and form a human body, where is shown the case where due to the small size of basic pieces (12), (14) and (15) and the way that those basic pieces are connected, they have only one slot (2) to be connected to other basic pieces. Also in Drawing 15 is shown~the possibility of basic pieces to have drawings or paintings on their surface in order to more accurately resemble the object which they represent.
In Drawing 16 are shown various other examples of shapes that the basic pieces can have according to the present invention. Figure 16a shows a rectangle (16) which on one of the longsides has openings resembling a battlement of acastle, havinga length of the long side s equal to the length of the side of basic pieces (1), (6) and (9) and on the one long side has two slots (2), the position of which is the same with those of the basic pieces (1), (6) and (9). The short side of the basic piece (16) has one slot (2) which has a distance n from one edge of the side and m from the other edge of the side. Figure 16b shows a rectangle (17) with length of the long side s equal to the length of the side of basic pieces (1), (6) and (9) and has two slots (2) on each long side, the positions of which is the same with those of basic pieces (1), (6) and (9). The short side of basic piece (17) has length t and has only one slot (2) which is located in the middle of the short side. Figures 16c and 16d show two other examples of basic pieces, a regular hexagon (18) and a rhombus (19), respectively, where the length s of each side equals to the length of the sides of basic pieces (1), (6) and (9), and also on each side have two slots (2), the position of which is the same with those of basic pieces (1), (6) and (9). Finally, Figure 16e shows a basic piece according to the present invention which has the shape of the side of a car (20), which the various sides which form the top side of the car have either length s and two slots (2) like the sides of basic blocks (1), (6) and (9), or length t and one slot (2) like the short sides of basic piece (17).
All basic pieces with the shape of rectangle (16) which on one long side have openings resembling battlements, rectangle (17), regular hexagon (18), rhombus (19) or shape of the side of a car (20), have slots (2) with the same depth (k) and width (w) with the slots (2) of basic pieces (1, 6, 9)·
Drawing 17 shows two examples of three dimensional structures which can be constructed with the combination of various basic pieces which have various shapes, like a castle which is constructed with the use of squares (1) and rectangles (16) which on one of the large side has opening resembling a battlement of a castle basic pieces (Fig. 17a) or a car which is been constructed with the use of squares (1), rectangles (17) and the shape of the side of a car (20) basic pieces (Fig. 17b). The connection of basic pieces is always done with the use of planar circular connectors (5).
The present invention can be used as a toy, to exercise mental functions of the brain and to enhance creativity, for children over 3 years old.
