Abstract

An herbicide composition comprises the reaction product of a sulfonic acid and a proton acceptor comprising nitrogen. The herbicide composition may also comprise additional components, such as water. The sulfonic acid may comprise an alkanesulfonic acid, such as methanesulfonic acid (MSA). The proton acceptor may comprise ammonium hydroxide, an amine, an aliphatic amino acid, an aminocarboxylate, or a combination thereof. The herbicide composition further comprises an herbicide different from the reaction product. Various types of herbicides may be utilized, such as glyphosate. A method of forming the herbicide composition comprises the step of combining the sulfonic acid and the proton acceptor to form the reaction product. The method further comprises the step of combining the reaction product and the herbicide to form the herbicide composition. The herbicide composition can be applied to various types of vegetation and/or soil to prevent or impede pre-emergence, growth, or re-growth of the vegetation.

STATEMENT UNDER ARTICLE 19(1)

After entry of this Amendment, claims 1, and 3-21 are pending in the application. Claims 1, 3-5, 9-17, and 19-20 are hereby amended. Claim 21 is hereby added. Claim 2 is hereby cancelled. Claims 6-8, and 18 are unchanged.

Item V of Written Opinion:

Applicants note, as stated in paragraph [0015] of the application, the proton acceptor should comprise at least one nitrogen atom and be capable of accepting a proton (or protons) from one or more molecules the sulfonic acid. In addition, Applicants respectfully submit that D2 does not disclose an alkanesulfonic acid, which is now recited in independent claims 1 and 19 after entry of this Amendment. Moreover, Applicants respectfully submit that D2, also does not disclose any of the proton acceptors recited in independent claim 15 after entry of this Amendment. For these reasons, the Applicants submit that independent claims 1, 15, and 19 and claims dependent thereon are novel and involve an inventive step.
