Abstract

The invention relates to a power supply unit (1), in particular a wide-range power supply unit, comprising a rectifier (2) for rectifying an alternating voltage (UE) into a pulsating direct voltage (U1) and comprising a smoothing module (3), which comprises a first smoothing capacitor (C1) and is provided in order to convert the pulsating direct voltage (U1) into a direct voltage of low ripple (U2), wherein the smoothing module (3) also comprises a second smoothing capacitor (C2) and an electrical switching module (33), by means of which the second smoothing capacitor (C2) can be connected in parallel with the first smoothing capacitor (C1) if a magnitude of the pulsating direct voltage (U1) falls below a threshold value.
