Description
CLOSING DEVICE WITH STRONG HYGIENIC PROPERTIES FOR CANS CONTAINING BEVERAGES AND LIQUIDS IN GENERAL
The present invention describes a closing device for cans of beverages and liquids in general, whose main peculiarity is having strong hygienic properties. It has an innovative opening system adapted to guarantee the safety of consumers in terms of hygiene.
As known, in the field of primary packaging or packing for beverages and liquids in general, there are numerous models of containers; the majority of them are made of alloys of aluminium, steel or equivalent material and equipped with a cylindrical shape. Generally called "cans", they are used for containing alcoholic or non-alcoholic sparkling beverages, and nowadays are widely used and consumed.
Since canned beverages are usually added with pressurized carbon dioxide, it is necessary that the cans, and therefore their related opening systems, are able to support internal pressures
equal to a few atmospheres. This is guaranteed by a wholly metallic cover shaped as a spherical cap and equipped with a pre-cut opening tongue. In a first version, the tongue was pulled upwards through a ring and was completely detached from the cover; the following evolution, which is nowadays the most widespread opening system, provides for a tongue which, through a lever-type movement, is pushed inside the can, remaining attached to the cover through a small edge. This latter type, with respect to the first, solves the problem of recovering the aluminium tongue and ring, preventing them from being dispersed in the environment; mmoreover, it avoides possible dangers deriving from cutting edges. None of the two systems, however, has the right hygiene requirements, since liquid poured, or even drank by putting one's lips on the cover edge, gets unavoidably in contact with the external part of the cover, washing its surface which can be contaminated by pathogenic agents, and therefore be a source of danger for the consumers' health. Under this latter aspect, the second opening system is still more anti-hygienic than the first, since the opening blade, exposed to the outside
environment and pushed inside the can, gets in closed contact with the beverages.
Therefore, object of the present invention is solving the above mentioned problems and inconveniences through a closing device for cans of beverages and liquids in general, with strong hygienic properties and of a new arrangement, characterised by a new opening system which has perfectly hygienic properties.
Within the same object, a particular object of the invention is obtaining a cover whose opening occurs without dispersing aluminium elements in the external environment.
Moreove, the closing device of the present invention, due to its peculiar features, offers the widest guarantees of reliability and safety of use, and can be easily manufactured by employing elements and materials which can be commonly found on the market.
Therefore, the subject matter of the present invention is more competitive from the economic point of view.
The above objects, and other which will more clearly appear below, are obtained by a closing device with strong hygienic properties, for cans
containing beverages and liquids in general, as claimed in claim 1.
Preferred embodiments and non-trivial variations of the present invention are claimed in the dependent Claims.
It is intended that all enclosed claims are an integral part of the present disclosure.
On the central hole of the cover, a plug will be advantageously placed, whose purpose is not sealing the presurized liquid, but protecting the outlet hole; therefore, it could also be made of plastic material of the type generally used for re-closing bottles. After the first opening of the can and the consequent exit of the pressurized gas, the plug could have the purpose of closing the can if the beverage is not completely drunk.
The actual sealing element is given by an elastically deformable cap, preferably made of plastic material or equivalent, being shaped as a thin spherical cap placed below the metallic cover. This cap has its vertex, and therefore its curvature, oriented towards the metallic cover which, in turn, has the same type of outward curvature and is adapted to counteract the liquid pressure without being subjected to distortions.
Cap and metallic cover therefore have compliant curvatures. The cap, along its circular edge, has an upturn through which it can be joined to the metallic cover by gluing, melting or engagement through a groove.
The spherical cap has one or more circular holes in an eccentric position with respect to its own vertex, so that said holes have no geometric correspondence with the central hole of the metallic cover; due to reasons of balance and seal of the device with respect to the internal pressure of the can, it is preferable that the number of holes is four, at the same distance one to the other and symmetrical with respect to the cap axis. Number and position of holes could anyway be different. The cup holes, on the side oriented towards the cover, are equipped with a projecting edge, of such a height as to compensate the distance between said elastically deformable cap and said cover and are equipped with means adapted to make a seal between said edges and said cover, for example rubber rings, or are shaped in order to make a beveled coupling with the cover, also suitably shaped.
The flexible cap therefore adheres to the
cover through the ring gaskets which are on the edges of the holes or the beveled coupling and is able to guarantee an airtight seal of liquid through the double effect of the thrust action exerted by its curved surface, and the internal pressure of the can.
A peculiar feature of the present invention is that opening of the can, once having removed the protecting plug, occurs through a mechanical pressure exerted, through the central hole of the cover, on the internal cup, which will be deformed due to its elastic properties, inverting its own curvature and assuming said second configuration, namely with its vertex oriented towards inside the can. Under such condition, the surface of the cap, first in contact with the metallic cover through the ring gaskets of its own holes, will move away from the cover, freeing the holes and allowing the passage of liquid through the same holes.
The mechanical pressure on the described cap will almost always be exerted by a finger: therefore, in order to prevent the finger from being deeply inserted, the cap is further characterized by a projecting element, placed in its central part, which ends as a small
disk and projects, in the configuration with closed can, till almost below the plug of the metallic cover. Thereby, the can will be opened by pressing onto such disk.
In order to improve the hygienic features of the present invention, it is provided that the cover is equipped with a third component, which can be optionally added. Placed inside the drip- preventing collar of the metallic cover, it is composed of a thin element made of plastic or rubber, having a circular section with shape as a frustum-of-cone bellows, which can be bent as an accordion and closed at its top. It will have three functions: the cap can be pushed without directly touching it, but by pressing on the closed top of such element; it will allow the pressurized gas to have a first expansion above the cap; and it will be a more pronounced drip-preventing collar once elongated. It will be closed at its top by a disk, preferably made of plastic, which can be detached by pulling it upwards through its projecting tongue. Under such condition, liquid can be poured without it getting in contact with the external part of the cover and one will be able to drink by directly placing one's lips over it.
Further features and advantages of the invention will more clearly appear from the following detailed description of its preferred, but not exclusive, embodiment, shown as a non- limiting example, with reference to the enclosed drawings, in which:
• Figure 1 shows as a whole, in an axonometric view, a closed can equipped with the closing device of the invention;
• Figure 2 shows, in an axonometric view, a can with the closing device of the invention disassembled in its components;
Figures 3 and 4 show, in an axonometric view, an elastically deformable spherical cap according to two configurations;
Figures 5, 6 and 7 show, in an axonometric view, the metallic cover with the extensible drip-preventing collar in various configurations ;
Figure 8 shows the section of a closed can equipped with the closing device of the invention;
Figure 9 shows the enlarged section of the closing device of the invention;
• Figure 10 shows, in section, the various elements composing the closing device of the invention;
• Figure 11 shows a top view of the spherical cap equipped with four holes with compensating edge, sealing gaskets and central raised disk;
• Figures 12 and 13 show the sequence of the opening steps of a can equipped with the closing device of the invention, respectively with and without the extensible drip- preventing collar.
With reference to Figures 1 and 2, the cover for cans of beverages and liquids in general with strong hygienic properties, according to the invention, designated as a whole by reference number (1), comprises a plurality of elements which, mutually joined, are applied to the body of the can (2) through current industrial processes.
According to a preferred embodiment, the elements composing the closing device of the invention are:
• a metallic cover (3) in which a central hole (3a) is obtained, equipped with a raised edge (4) ;
• a protecting and closing plug (5), preferibilmente in materiale plastico, alloggiato su said raised edge (4) ;
• an elastically deformable spherical cap (6) equipped with one or more holes (7), for example four, which is assembled below the cover (3), said holes (7) not being in geometric correspondence with said central hole (3a) of the cover (3) .
As shown in Figures 3 and 4, the cap (6) can assume two configurations. In the first configuration (Fig. 3), the cap (6) is upward curved, while in the second configuration (Fig. 4) it is downward curved. The passage from the first to the second configuration is obtained by pressing onto the top of the cap (6) itself, along its curvature center direction.
As shown in Figures 8, 9, 10 and 11, the deformable spherical cap (6), which is the actual sealing element, has, along its circular edge, an upturn (11) through which it will be able to be joined to the metallic cover (3). The holes (7), obtained on the cap (6), are equipped with a projecting edge (8), of a suitable height, whose function is compensating the distance between the
cap (6) itself and the cover (3) above, means being provided which are adapted to make a seal between said projecting edge (8) and said cover (3) . In practice, after its assembling, the spherical cap (6) compresses the edges (8) of the holes (7) against the lower part of the cover (3), thereby making a seal, so that the beverage contained in the can does not go out, by leaking through the hollow space present between the cover (3) and the cap (6) . Said means adapted to make a seal between said projecting edge (8) and said cover (3) comprise rubber annular gaskets (9) or a beveled coupling (not shown) between the edges (8) of the holes (7) and the cover (3), which is suitably shaped.
The cap (6) is preferably equipped with a central projection (10), whose function will be clarified below.
According to a preferred embodiment, shown in Figures 5, 6 and 7, in the hole (3a) of the cover (3), inside the raised edge (4), an extendable drip-preventing collar (12) is placed, composed of a thin element made of plastic or rubber, having a circular section with shape as a frustum-of-cone bellows, which can be bent as an accordion and
closed at its top.
The feature which makes the present invention peculiar is that the deformable spherical cap (6), which is upward curved in the configuration with closed can, due to its own elasticity and deformability degree, is subjected to invert its curvature through a mechanical pressure exerted on its top. It follows that the edges (8) of the holes (7) are separated from the cover (3) and the beverage contained in the can (2) penetrates into the hollow space included between the cap (6) and the cover (3) and can be poured through the central hole (3a) of the cover (3) .
The extendable drip-preventing collar (12), which can be optionally added in order to improve the hygienic features of the present invention, is housed inside the ring collar (4) of the metallic cover (3) ; it is adapted to be bent as an accordion and is closed at its top by a disk (13), which can be detached by pulling it upwards through its projecting tongue.
From the functional point of view, opening of a container for beverages and liquids in general according to the invention occurs in the below described mode, as can be seen in the various
drawings shown in a sequence in Figures 12 and 13.
In Figure 12, which shows the invention in its most complete configuration equipped with the extensible drip-preventing collar (12) , opening is performed by extracting the protecting and closing plug (5) by pulling it upwards, after having removed a possible seal; the pressure is applied onto the deformable spherical cap (6) by acting with a finger on the projection (10), thereby generating the inversion of curvature of the cap (6) and the opening of the holes (7) .
The pressure onto the cap (6) is exerted by pressing with a finger onto the disk (13) which closes the extensible collar (12) . In this way, the collar (12) is inward extended. The pressurized gas which invades the hollow recess included between the cap (6) and the cover (3) tends to generate an outward elongation of the extensible collar (12); differently the extensible collar will be manually lifted. Then, the closing disk (13) will be removed, through its projecting tongue, enabling to open the container.
In Figure 13, which shows the invention in the configuration lacking the extensible drip- preventing collar (12), the protecting and closing
plug (5) is more simply removed by pulling it upwards, and a pressure is exerted onto the projection (10) of the cap (6) , inserting a finger into the hole (3a) of the cover (3), thereby generating the inversion of curvature of the cap (6) and the opening of the holes (7) .
The above described invention is subjected to variations and modifications, all falling within the scope of the enclosed claims.
Moreover, all parts could be replaced by other technically equivalent elements.
In practice, used materials, provided that they are compatible with their specific use, in addition to relevant shapes and sizes, could be changed according to needs.
