Description

LIFTING APPARATUS FOR HANDLING OF AN EQUIPMENT AT A DRILL FLOOR'S CENTRE AND USE OF THE LIFTING APPARATUS
The invention relates to a lifting apparatus for use on a drill floor. More precisely, the invention relates to a lifting apparatus for lifting relatively light equipment at the centre of a drill floor. In particular, the invention relates to a lifting apparatus that can be quickly mobilized when needed and that can be quickly demobilized.
A drill floor is above the centre of a well. Right above the well centre, the drill floor is provided with a main passage. The mam passage may form part of a rotary table. A derrick or a drilling mast projects above the drill floor. The function of the derrick is to support a lifting arrangement for a drill string or casing. The lifting arrangement is arranged to lower the drill string or the casing into the well or lift these up from the well. The derrick may be provided with a top drive, often termed a top drive in the art. The top drive is secured to the lifting arrangement of the derrick or drilling mast and can be moved up and down above the well centre.
The lifting arrangement of the derrick is arranged to handle heavy lifts, such as a drill string or casing. In some operations, there is a need to lift lighter equipment in the vicinity of the well centre, while, at the same time, the drill string or casing is hanging from the top drive or from the elevator of the top drive. A downhole pump mounted on a production string is an example of such lighter equipment.
The patent document US 7,096,963 discloses a tension frame which may be attached to the lifting arrangement of the derrick and which is connected to a riser system. The tension frame is arranged to securely hold well-intervention equipment such as a so- called injector for a coiled-tubing operation or a so-called lubricator. This is relatively heavy equipment and, on a transverse bar in its upper portion, the tension frame is provided with a separate, centred winch for lifting or lowering the heavy equipment relative to the frame. When such equipment is used, there is a need to be able to lift relatively light equipment in to the well centre. For this purpose, the tension frame is provided with a crane, which is rotatable around the vertical axis, on one of its vertical bars. The crane is provided with a winch and drawworks. The crane can lift up equipment to the side of the frame, and the crane can be rotated so that the equipment is carried in above the well centre.
The invention has for its object to remedy or reduce at least one of the drawbacks of the prior art or at least provide a useful alternative to the prior art.
The object is achieved through features which are specified in the description below and in the claims that follow.

The lifting arrangement may be positioned in a derrick or in a drilling mast.
The lifting apparatus may be arranged to be releasably attached to the portion of the lifting arrangement. The movable lifting arrangement may consist of a top drive. The lifting apparatus may be arranged to be releasably attached to the top drive. The lifting apparatus may be arranged to be releasably attached to the drive shaft of the top drive.
The lifting apparatus may be provided with an arm which is provided with a mounting element at its free end portion. The lifting apparatus may be provided with an articulated arm. The mounting element of the arm may be arranged to be attached to a top drive. The mounting element may be arranged to be releasably attached to the drive shaft of the top drive.
In a second aspect, the invention relates to a method of lifting equipment near and above a well centre on a drill floor, wherein the method includes:
- providing a lifting apparatus as described above;
- positioning the lifting apparatus on the drill floor near the well centre;
- lowering a vertically movable part of a lifting arrangement down to the lifting apparatus;
- attaching the lifting apparatus to a portion on the bottom side of the movable part of the lifting arrangement;
- lifting the movable part of the lifting arrangement to a desired working height above the drill floor; and
- activating a winch in the lifting apparatus to be able to lift or lower an object up or down relative to the drill floor. The method may further include attaching the lifting apparatus to a portion on the bottom side of a top drive.
In what follows, examples of preferred embodiments are described, which are visualized in the accompanying drawings, in which :
Figure 1 shows a top drive provided with a winch in a first embodiment;
Figure 2 shows the same as figure 1 in an alternative embodiment;
Figure 3 shows the same as figure 1 in a further alternative embodiment; and
Figure 4 shows the same as figure 1 in a further alternative embodiment.
In the drawings, the reference numeral 1 indicates a top drive (top drive) of a type known per se. The top drive 1 may be of various designs as it is known within the art. The top drive 1 is therefore not described particularly, with the exception of the parts that are necessary to describe the manner of operation of the invention. The top drive 1 is attached to a lifting arrangement (not shown) which is moved vertically within a derrick (not shown) or moved vertically along a drilling mast (not shown).
A lifting apparatus 2 according to the invention includes a winch 3 and a winch holder 4. The winch holder 4 includes a protective frame 41 enclosing the winch 3.
The winch 3 is of a type known per se, and the winch 3 may be driven by an electric motor or a hydraulic motor (not shown) as it is known in the art. The winch 3 may be controlled by means of a control cable (not shown) or it may be controlled in a wireless manner, for example by means of radio signals. The winch 3 is provided with a wire (not shown) and a drum 31, among other things. At its end portion, the wire is provided with a fastening device, such as a lifting hook (not shown). The winch 3 is not described in further detail as a person skilled in the art will know how the winch 3 may be attached to the protective frame 41 and how the winch 3 is to be operated. As an alternative to a wire, the winch 3 may be provided with a chain or a rope. The winch 3 may also be provided with a tackle (not shown).
The lifting apparatus 2 includes a mounting element 5. In one embodiment, which is shown in figure 1, the mounting element 5 is positioned on the upper portion 43 of the protective frame 41, projecting up therefrom. The mounting element 5 is provided with an internal threaded portion 51. The internal threaded portion 51 complementari- ly fits an external threaded portion 11 on the downward-projecting drive shaft 13 of the top drive 1. The mounting element 5 may be rigidly fixed to the protective frame 41. In this embodiment, the drive shaft 13 is screwed with its external threaded portion 11 into the internal threaded portion 51.
