Abstract

The present invention provides a foldable protective casing for handheld electronic device which comprises a handheld electronic device receiving area, a transparent protective cover holder, a transparent protective cover, a left pivoting member and a right pivoting member. The present invention is compact in size and could be easily converted into a stand for handheld electronic device.

TITLE OF THE INVENTION

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] With the expansion of the market of handheld electronic devices such as mobile phones, smart phones, tablet PCs, e-books, multimedia players, gaming consoles and so forth, there is a growing demand and supply for peripheral items and accessories for handheld electronic devices. Various kinds of protective casings and stands are introduced to the market to facilitate the use of handheld electronic devices. However, currently protective casings and stands are usually separate products and for attaining both objectives the users usually need to purchase two different products. This brings much inconvenience to the users.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The present invention provides a foldable protective casing for handheld electronic device which is compact in size and could be easily converted into a stand for handheld electronic device.
[0004] To attain this, the foldable protective casing for handheld electronic device of the present invention comprises
[0005] - a handheld electronic device receiving area defined by a top wall, a left wall, a right wall and a bottom wall;
[0006] - a transparent protective cover holder slidably disposed at a front side of the handheld electronic device receiving area and provided with an opening which corresponds in size and position to a display screen of a handheld electronic device received in the handheld electronic device receiving area; [0007] - a transparent protective cover which covers the opening of the transparent protective cover holder;
[0008] - a left pivoting member and a right pivoting member disposed at a bottom part of the left wall and the right wall respectively; each of the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member has a slot for the transparent protective cover holder to slide between a first position where a bottom end of the transparent protective cover holder positions at a bottom end of each of the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member and a second position where a top end of the transparent protective cover holder positions at a top end of each of the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member; and each of the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member is pivotable around a pivoting axis parallel and near to the bottom wall to bring along the transparent protective cover holder to pivot
reciprocally between a protect position where the transparent protective cover holder is at the first position and rests over a front side of the handheld electronic device and a folded position where the transparent protective cover holder is at the second position and rests over a back side of the handheld electronic device, and in between the protect position and the folded position is a stand position where the transparent protective cover holder is at the second position and disposed at an angle to the back side of the handheld electronic device to serve as a stand for the handheld electronic device.
[0009] The transparent protective cover holder is provided with a pulling flange at a bottom end thereof for facilitating pulling of the transparent protective cover holder downward from the first position to the second position, and a protrusion at a top end thereof for preventing the transparent protective cover holder from completely removed from the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member as it slides from the first position to the second position.
[0010] Each of the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member is in an L shape with a first side and a second side; the first side of the left pivoting member fits into a notch of the left wall to form part of the left wall and the first side of the right pivoting member fits into a notch of the right wall to form part of the right wall in the protect position; the second side of each of the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member comprises two parallel extensions extending perpendicularly from the first side thereof and each of the two extensions is provided with semi-circular gear teeth at a free end thereof; the semi-circular gear teeth of the two extensions of the left pivoting member meshes with gear teeth provided correspondingly at the left wall and the gear teeth of the two extensions of the right pivoting member meshes with gear teeth provided correspondingly at the right wall to function as a ratchet which snaps in different angles.
[001 1 ] Each of the two extensions of the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member is also provided with a protrusion which fits into a pivot hole provided on the left wall and the right wall respectively to serve as the pivoting axis.
[0012] A front panel may extend between the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member which covers the transparent protective cover holder at the protect position to provide additional protection to the bottom part of the handheld electronic device where there is no display screen.
[0013] The front panel may be provided with one or more openings or notches at positions corresponding to control buttons of the handheld electronic device.
[0014] The front panel may be unitarily formed with the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member. [0017] A recess is provided at corresponding positions at the upper half top wall and/or the lower half top wall to facilitate users to disengage the upper half casing from the lower half casing.
[0018] The transparent protective cover is made of a transparent plastic material such as polycarbonate (PC), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or glass.
[0019] To use the present invention, the user first disengages the upper half casing from the lower half casing, and positions the handheld electronic device onto the lower half casing, and thereafter engages the upper half casing and the lower half casing so that the handheld electronic device is secured in the handheld electronic device receiving area. [0020] When the handheld electronic device is not in use, the transparent protective cover holder is at the first position so as to cover the front side of the handheld electronic device to offer complete protection. The left pivoting member and the right pivoting member are in the protect position at this stage.
[0021 ] To use the handheld electronic device, the user could simply operate on the handheld electronic device display screen with his finger or a stylus with the transparent protective cover holder covering the front side of the handheld electronic device, as the transparent protective cover is designed to allow such operation.
[0022] To turn the present invention into a handheld electronic device stand, the user first pulls the transparent protective phone cover to the second position;
thereafter, the user pivots the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member from the protect position to the stand position so as to dispose the transparent protective cover holder at an angle to the back side of the handheld electronic device to serve as a stand for the handheld electronic device. The stand can work in both horizontal and vertical direction.
[0023] If the user prefers to operate on the handheld electronic device display screen with his finger or a stylus with the transparent protective cover holder removed from the handheld electronic device display screen, the user may first pulls the transparent protective phone cover to the second position; thereafter, the user pivots the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member from the protect position to the folded position so that the transparent protective cover rests over a back side of the handheld electronic device and thus occupies only minimal space. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0034] The drawings below and the specific embodiments of the present invention will be described in details.
[0035] Figures 1 to 10 illustrates a preferred embodiment of the present invention. In this embodiment, the handheld electronic device 10 is a mobile phone. As illustrated, the foldable protective casing of the present embodiment comprises a handheld electronic device receiving area 1 defined by a top wall 1 1 , a left wall 12, a right wall 13 and a bottom wall 14. The handheld electronic device receiving area 1 is enclosed by an upper half casing 1 a and a lower half casing 1 b. The upper half casing 1 a comprises an upper half top wall 1 1 a, an upper half left wall 12a, an upper half right wall 13a and an upper half bottom wall 14a. The lower half casing 1 b comprises a lower half top wall 1 1 b, a lower half left wall 12b, a lower half right wall 13b and a panel 14b connecting the lower half top wall 1 1 b, the lower half left wall 12b and the lower half right wall 13b. The upper half casing 1 a is removably engaged with the lower half casing 1 b. The upper half top wall 1 1 a and the lower half top wall 1 1 b form the top wall 1 1 ; the upper half left wall 12a and the lower half left wall 12b form the left wall 12; the upper half right wall 13a and the lower half right wall 13b form the right wall 13; the upper half bottom wall 14a forms the bottom wall 14. A recess 15 is provided at the upper half top wall 1 1 a to facilitate users to disengage the upper half casing 1 a from the lower half casing 1 b. [0036] The foldable protective casing of the present embodiment further comprises a transparent protective cover holder 2 slidably disposed at a front side of the handheld electronic device receiving area 1 and provided with an opening which corresponds in size and position to a display screen of a handheld electronic device 10 received in the handheld electronic device receiving area 1 , a transparent protective cover 3 which covers the opening of the transparent protective cover holder 2, a left pivoting member 4 and a right pivoting member 5 disposed at a bottom part of the left wall 12 and the right wall 13 respectively. Each of the left pivoting member 4 and the right pivoting member 5 has a slot 41 , 51 for the transparent protective cover holder 2 to slide between a first position where a bottom end 21 of the transparent protective cover holder 2 positions at a bottom end 42, 52 of each of the left pivoting member 4 and the right pivoting member 5 and a second position where a top end 22 of the transparent protective cover holder 2 positions at a top end 43, 53 of each of the left pivoting member 4 and the right pivoting member 5. Each of the left pivoting member 4 and the right pivoting member 5 is pivotable around a pivoting axis 6 (illustrated in broken line in Figure 2) parallel and near to the bottom wall 14 to bring along the transparent protective cover holder 2 to pivot reciprocally between a protect position where the transparent protective cover holder 2 is at the first position and rests over a front side of the handheld electronic device 10 and a folded position where the transparent protective cover holder 2 is at the second position and rests over a back side of the handheld electronic device 10, and in between the protect position and the folded position is a stand position where the transparent protective cover holder 2 is at the second position and disposed at an angle to the back side of the handheld electronic device 10 to serve as a stand for the handheld electronic device 10. [0037] In other embodiments, the transparent protective cover holder 2 may be provided with a pulling flange at a bottom end thereof for facilitating pulling of the transparent protective cover holder 2 downward from the first position to the second position, and a protrusion at a top end thereof for preventing the transparent protective cover holder 2 from completely removed from the left pivoting member 4 and the right pivoting member 5 as it slides from the first position to the second position.
[0038] In the present embodiment, each of the left pivoting member 4 and the right pivoting member 5 is in an L shape with a first side 44, 54 and a second side 45, 55. The first side 44 of the left pivoting member 4 fits into a notch 121 of the upper half left wall 12a to form part of the upper half left wall 12a and the first side 54 of the right pivoting member 5 fits into a notch 131 of the upper half right wall 13a to form part of the upper half right wall 13a in the protect position. Figure 10 illustrates the left pivoting member 4. The second side 45 of the left pivoting member 4 comprises two parallel extensions 46 extending perpendicularly from the first side 44 thereof and each of the two extensions 46 is provided with semi-circular gear teeth 47 at a free end thereof; the semi-circular gear teeth 47 of the two extensions 46 of the left pivoting member 4 meshes with gear teeth 121 provided correspondingly at the lower half left wall 12b to function as a ratchet which snaps in different angles. Each of the two extensions 46 of the left pivoting member 4 is also provided with a protrusion 48 which fits into a pivot hole 122 provided on the lower half left wall 12b to serve as the pivoting axis 6. The structure of the right pivoting member 5 is similar to that of the left pivoting member 4 as mentioned above, and is therefore not repeated herein. [0039] In some embodiments, the bottom wall 14 may be provided with openings corresponding to speaker, microphone and/or connection port of the handheld electronic device 10 received in the handheld electronic device receiving area 1 .
[0040] In the present embodiment, the transparent protective cover 3 is made of polycarbonate (PC). In other embodiments, other transparent plastic materials or glass may be used instead.
[0041 ] To use the present invention, the user first disengages the upper half casing 1 1 a from the lower half casing 1 1 b, and positions the handheld electronic device 10 onto the lower half casing 1 1 b, and thereafter engages the upper half casing 1 1 a and the lower half casing 1 1 b so that the handheld electronic device 10 is secured in the handheld electronic device receiving area 1 .
[0042] When the handheld electronic device 10 is not in use, the transparent protective cover holder 2 is at the first position so as to cover the front side of the handheld electronic device 10 to offer complete protection. The left pivoting member 4 and the right pivoting member 5 are in the protect position at this stage.
[0043] To use the handheld electronic device 10, the user could simply operate on the handheld electronic device 10 display screen with his finger or a stylus with the transparent protective cover holder 2 covering the front side of the handheld electronic device 10, as the transparent protective cover 3 is designed to allow such operation.
[0044] To turn the present invention into a handheld electronic device stand, the user first pulls the transparent protective cover 3 to the second position; thereafter, the user pivots the left pivoting member 4 and the right pivoting member 5 from the protect position to the stand position so as to dispose the transparent protective cover holder 2 at an angle to the back side of the handheld electronic device 10 to serve as a stand for the handheld electronic device 10.
[0045] If the user prefers to operate on the handheld electronic device 10 display screen with his finger or a stylus with the transparent protective cover holder 2 removed from the handheld electronic device 10 display screen, the user may first pulls the transparent protective phone cover 3 to the second position; thereafter, the user pivots the left pivoting member 4 and the right pivoting member 5 from the protect position to the folded position so that the transparent protective cover 3 rests over a back side of the handheld electronic device 10 and thus occupies only minimal space.
[0046] The above embodiment is a preferred embodiment of the present invention. The present invention is capable of other embodiments and is not limited by the above embodiment. Any other variation, decoration, substitution, combination or simplification, whether in substance or in principle, not deviated from the spirit of the present invention, is replacement or substitution of equivalent effect and falls within the scope of protection of the present invention.

Claims

CLAIMS What is claimed is:
1 . A foldable protective casing for handheld electronic device which comprises
a handheld electronic device receiving area defined by a top wall, a left wall, a right wall and a bottom wall;
a transparent protective cover holder slidably disposed at a front side of the handheld electronic device receiving area and provided with an opening which corresponds in size and position to a display screen of a handheld electronic device received in the handheld electronic device receiving area;
a transparent protective cover which covers the opening of the transparent protective cover holder;
a left pivoting member and a right pivoting member disposed at a bottom part of the left wall and the right wall respectively; each of the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member has a slot for the transparent protective cover holder to slide between a first position where a bottom end of the transparent protective cover holder positions at a bottom end of each of the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member and a second position where a top end of the transparent protective cover holder positions at a top end of each of the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member; and each of the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member is pivotable around a pivoting axis parallel and near to the bottom wall to bring along the transparent protective cover holder to pivot reciprocally between a protect position where the transparent protective cover holder is at the first position and rests over a front side of the handheld electronic device and a folded position where the transparent protective cover holder is at the second position and rests over a back side of the handheld electronic device, and in between the protect position and the folded position is a stand position where the transparent protective cover holder is at the second position and disposed at an angle to the back side of the handheld electronic device to serve as a stand for the handheld electronic device.

The foldable protective casing for handheld electronic device as in Claim 1 , wherein the transparent protective cover holder is provided with a pulling flange at a bottom end thereof for facilitating pulling of the transparent protective cover holder downward from the first position to the second position, and a protrusion at a top end thereof for preventing the transparent protective cover holder from completely removed from the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member as it slides from the first position to the second position.

The foldable protective casing for handheld electronic device as in Claim 1 , wherein each of the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member is in an L shape with a first side and a second side; the first side of the left pivoting member fits into a notch of the left wall to form part of the left wall and the first side of the right pivoting member fits into a notch of the right wall to form part of the right wall in the protect position; the second side of each of the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member comprises two parallel extensions extending perpendicularly from the first side thereof and each of the two extensions is provided with semi-circular gear teeth at a free end thereof; the semi-circular gear teeth of the two extensions of the left pivoting member meshes with gear teeth provided correspondingly at the left wall and the gear teeth of the two extensions of the right pivoting member meshes with gear teeth provided correspondingly at the right wall to function as a ratchet which snaps in different angles.

The foldable protective casing for handheld electronic device as in Claim 3, wherein each of the two extensions of the left pivoting member and the right pivoting member is also provided with a protrusion which fits into a pivot hole provided on the left wall and the right wall respectively to serve as the pivoting axis.
5. The foldable protective casing for handheld electronic device as in Claim 1 , wherein the bottom wall is provided with openings corresponding to speaker, microphone and/or connection port of the handheld electronic device received in the handheld electronic device receiving area.

The foldable protective casing for handheld electronic device as in Claim 1 , wherein the handheld electronic device receiving area is enclosed by an upper half casing and a lower half casing; the upper half casing comprises an upper half top wall, an upper half left wall, an upper half right wall and an upper half bottom wall; the lower half casing comprises a lower half top wall, a lower half left wall, a lower half right wall and a panel connecting the lower half top wall, the lower half left wall and the lower half right wall; the upper half casing is removably engaged with the lower half casing; the upper half top wall and the lower half top wall form the top wall; the upper half left wall and the lower half left wall form the left wall; the upper half right wall and the lower half right wall form the right wall; the upper half bottom wall forms the bottom wall.
7. The foldable protective casing for handheld electronic device as in Claim 6, wherein a recess is provided at corresponding positions at the upper half top wall and/or the lower half top wall to facilitate users to disengage the upper half casing from the lower half casing.
