Description
TOILET SEATS
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to toilet seats.
Toilet seats typically comprise a seat portion, a lid portion hingedly connected to the seat portion and means for mounting the toilet seat on a toilet bowl or pedestal.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved toilet seat, in particular, one that can be mounted more reliably and simply on the toilet bowl or pedestal.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a toilet seat which, when mounted on a toilet bowl or pedestal, can readily be removed from the toilet bowl or pedestal to facilitate cleaning of the toilet bowl or pedestal.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a toilet seat comprising a seat portion, a lid portion, a hinge mechanism pivotally connecting the lid portion to the seat portion and suction cups carried by the hinge mechanism for releasable attachment of the hinge mechanism to a toilet bowl or pedestal.
The suction cups preferably provide the sole means for attachment of the hinge mechanism to the toilet bowl or pedestal.
There may be two suction cups (though more may be provided if required) and each suction cup is preferably movable between a gripping condition and a release position on movement of an operating member. The operating member may be a lever or a screw mechanism, or any other form of twist, pull or push and lock type mechanism for moving a suction cup into its "fixing" position.
Most toilet bowls or pedestals are provided with holes for the attachment of conventional toilet seats and the toilet seat of the present invention may accordingly be used in combination with rubber or foamed plastic plugs that fit in the holes.
If desired, a plurality of foamed plastic pads may be attached to the underside of the seat portion to provide a cushioning effect and to ensure added stability.
If, of course, the toilet bowl or pedestal is not provided with holes for the attachment of the toilet seat, then the toilet seat of the present invention can be mounted simply and economically directly on the toilet bowl or pedestal.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided the combination of a toilet bowl or pedestal that is not formed with mounting holes in its upper surface and a toilet seat as defined above.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Figure 1 is a plan view of one half of a hinge mechanism for a toilet seat according to the present invention,
Figure 2 is an underneath plan view of the device shown in Figure 1 ,
Figure 3 is a side view of the device shown in Figure 1 ,
Figure 4 is a plan view of a toilet seat according to the present invention,
Figure 5 is an underneath plan view of the toilet seat of Figure 4, and
Figure 6 is a side view of a toilet pedestal fitted with the toilet seat of Figures 4 and 5.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment
The toilet seat shown in the drawings includes a seat portion 10 and a lid portion 9, which may be formed of wood or produced as plastic mouldings. The lid portion 9 is hingedly connected to the seat portion 10 for movement relative thereto between a closed position, as shown in Figure 6, and a raised position.
A two-part hinge mechanism is connected to the seat portion 10, which has a straight edge parallel to the hinge axis. The two parts of the hinge mechanism are positioned one at each end of the straight edge and each part of the hinge mechanism includes an upper hinge arm 1 that is connected to the lid portion 9 and a lower hinge arm 7 that is connected to the toilet seat 10. The two hinge arms 1 and 7 are connected by a pivot pin 5 on which is mounted a locking lever 3 having a bifurcated end portion with a connecting element 4 located between the two limbs of the locking lever 3. The connecting element 4 interconnects the pivot 5 and a suction cup 8 contained within a suction cup casing 2.
The suction cup 8 is movable between a gripping position and a release position on operation of the locking lever 3 and the arrangement is such that, to attach the toilet seat 10 to a toilet bowl or pedestal 12 having a seat rim 11 , the toilet seat 10 is moved into the
required position resting on the rim 11 of the toilet seat bowl or pedestal 12 and then the suction cups 8 are moved into their gripping positions on operation of the locking levers 3.
In the embodiment shown in the drawings, such movement of the suction cups 8 into their gripping positions is effected by pivotal movement of the two levers 3 whereas, in alternative embodiments not shown in the drawings, movement of the suction cups 8 into their gripping positions is effected by rotation of a handle connected to an externally threaded shaft, i.e. by means of a screw mechanism.
As mentioned above, most toilet bowls or pedestals are provided with holes for the attachment of conventional toilet seats. Thus, before the toilet seat of the present invention is attached to the rim 11 of the toilet bowl or pedestal 12, rubber or foamed plastic plugs (not shown) can be fitted in the holes, if needed.
The toilet seat is moved into the required position for attachment to the toilet bowl or pedestal with the suction cups 8 in their release conditions, and a steady downward pressure is applied to ensure that there is firm engagement of the downwardly facing surfaces of the suction cups 8 with the upwardly facing surface of the rim 1 1 of the toilet bowl or pedestal 12. The suction cups 8 are then moved into their gripping positions, by pivotal movement of the levers 3.
When it is desired to clean the toilet bowl or pedestal 12, the toilet seat 10 can readily be removed by moving the suction cups 8 into their release positions.
In the embodiments shown in the drawings, there are just two suction cups 8, but a row of more than two suction cups may be used if so desired.
If desired, a plurality of foamed plastic pads (not shown) may be attached to the underside of the seat portion 10 to provide a cushioning effect. In addition, if desired, the front of the seat portion 10 may have a central gap (not shown) as is the practice in public toilets in the United States.
