Definitions
- the object of the invention is an electrical pathway marker, which is a part of floor or wall tiling and which comprises
- control device for switching the light source element on or off or- for changing the marker sign.
- a further object of the invention is a system for exit route guidance by means of which system people can be guided to a desired direction of exit.
- the system - 7 utilises the pathway markers according to the invention.
- the advantage of the invention compared to known solutions is that it provides a - panel element which is aesthetically desirable in normal conditions, that is, in well- lighted or illuminated conditions. This aim is not achieved by merely using a translucent layer for covering the LED element, because the desired outward appearance pattern requires, on the one hand, a neutral, that is, a white . background, and on the other hand, its own print carrier separate from the background.
- FIG. 1 shows diagrammatically the system according to the invention
- Figure 2 shows a pathway marker according to a preferred embodiment of the invention, which constitutes the essential part of the system
- Figure 3 shows a pathway marker according to a second preferred embodiment of the invention
- Figure 4 shows a pathway marker according to a third preferred embodiment of the invention
- Figure 5 shows an exploded cross-section of a pathway marker corresponding to Figure 4, illustrating more closely the structure of the LED element 8.
- Figure 1 shows a group of pathway markers 1 placed adjacently in a row and comprising a marker sign 3, which is in the case shown, for example, a green illuminated arrow.
- a second group of pathway markers 2 are placed in a row in a similar way as the first pathway markers 1.
- the pathway markers 2 are provided with a marker sign 4, which is, for example, a red cross figure and may be a flashing one.
- Pathway markers 1 and 2 are typically floor markers placed at the top or bottom end of stairs, whereby in the disclosed example, the luminous marker signs 3 and 4 guide in the direction of movement pointed to by the arrows.
- the pathway markers may also be placed on the vertical planes between the step planes on the stairs or in the lower parts of the walls.
- pathway markers 1 and 2 are made such that the marker signs 3, 4 are not visible when the surrounding space is normally lighted.
- the pathway marker 1 and 2 provided with LED elements 8 is made multilayered.
- the pathway marker 1 comprises two overlapping panel elements 11, 12, of which the upper panel element is marked with reference numeral 11 and the lower panel element with reference numeral 12.
- the upper panel element 11 is of transparent or sufficiently translucent material, such as glass or plastic, for example, polycarbonate.
- the light source formed of the LED element 8 inside the pathway marker 1 and 2 may act to form a luminous marker sign 3, 4.
- the upper panel element 11 has an upper surface 11a and a lower surface lib.
- the upper surface 11a forms for its part a surface limiting the surrounding space, such as a floor or wall surface.
- material for the lower panel element 12 can be used a material similar to that used for the upper panel element 11 or some other material, for example, stone, wood, concrete, aluminium, steel, a steel alloy or ceramic material.
- a LED element 8 in the shape of the desired shape of the marker sign 3 or 4 is arranged between the panel elements 11 and 12.
- the edges of the panel elements 11 and 12 are preferably provided with seals 14 in order to prevent humidity and dirt, which might otherwise damage the LED elements 8 and pathway markers 1 and 2, from entering the pathway marker 1 and 2.
- the panel elements 11 and 12 are preferably joined together by means of the seals 14.
- the thickness of the seals determines the distance between the panel elements 11 and 12, in other words, the thickness of the gap into which the LED element 8 can be fitted.
- the thickness of the seals is preferably essentially the same or slightly greater than the thickness of the LED element 8.
- the embodiment shown in Figure 3 differs from the embodiment of Figure 2 in that the LED element 8' is fitted in an embedding made in the upper surface 12b of the lower panel element 12.
- the upper surface of the embedded LED element 8' may be fitted in accordance with the dimensioning of the embedding on the same level, or on essentially the same level, as the upper surface 12b of the lower panel element 12.
- the edge seals of the pathway marker 1 can then be dimensioned to be much thinner than in the embodiment shown in Figure 2, thus making the pathway marker as a whole thinner.
- a translucent layer or surface 13 which blocks the visibility of the LED element 8 in external light, but allows the light emitted by the LED element 8 to be visible through the upper panel element 11.
- This layer or surface 13 is arranged in conjunction with the lower surface lib in order for it to function as a background surface for the outward appearance pattern 11c, 11c' on the upper surface 11a of the upper panel element 11, which is visible in external light as the only pattern determining the outward appearance, but allows the light emitted by the LED element to be visible through the outward appearance pattern.
- the outward appearance pattern must, therefore, be sufficiently translucent also in its coloured parts, but must at the same time reflect sufficiently strongly light coming from the outside.
- the layer or surface 13 is preferably a white translucent film 13, the purpose of which is to act as a neutral background for the outward appearance pattern 11c, 11c'.
- the film 13 thus blocks the LED element 8, and thus the marker sign 3, from being visible through the upper panel element 11 in external light when the LED element is not transmitting light.
- Figure 2 shows an upper surface 11a provided with a chipping-like outward appearance pattern 11c.
- the outward appearance pattern 11c is made on the upper surface 11a preferably by screen printing. While the printed pattern is wet, glass chips or nuggets or the like are attached on the upper surface 11a in the areas covered by the pattern 11c.
- Figure 3 shows a striped pattern 11c' on the upper surface 11a, illustrating that the printed patterns may be different, and that the shapes may be selected, for example, to suit the surface or space surrounding the marker 1. After attaching the glass chips, the glass chips are fired onto the upper surface 11a of the upper panel element 11. In addition to forming the outward appearance pattern, a further purpose of the firing is roughening, which forms a more antiskid upper surface 11a on the panel element 1 for pedestrians.
- the embodiment of Figure 4 differs from Figure 2 mainly in that the outward appearance pattern 11c is printed on a film 15 which is laminated between two glass plate layers 16a, 16b. There may obviously also be more layers laminated on top of one another.
- the glass sheet layers 16a, 16b are thus laminated into one panel element 21, for example, with clear resin on both sides of the film 15.
- the film 15 is preferably provided with an outward appearance pattern 11c imitating the surrounding surface, the pattern showing through the upper glass layer 16a.
- a translucent white film 13 between the upper panel element 21 and the LED element 8 acts as a neutral background layer for the imitation pattern, whereby the colour shades of the pattern remain unchanged.
- this translucent but non-transparent film 13 blocks the visibility of the LED element 8 in external light, but allows the visibility of the light emitted by the LED element.
- the desired external appearance pattern 11c is printed on the film layer with a sufficiently thin layer of colour, in order that the light of the LED element is also able to pass through the colour layer of the outward appearance pattern 11c. Thus, the desired external appearance pattern does not interfere with the sufficient visibility of the marker sign.
- Figure 5 shows in greater detail how a perforated plate 8a is placed on the LED element 8 for directing the light.
- the perforations in the perforated plate 8a prevent the light from scattering in the upper layers, whereby sufficiently sharp edges are obtained for the marker sign.
- LED elements instead of an LED element may obviously be used any light source element, which are used, for example, in displays. LED elements are, however, economical and well-suited for the purpose.
- translucent white opal glass can be used as the lower glass layer 16b of the laminate formed by the upper panel element 21.
- material for the layers 16a and 16b can be used transparent carbonate sheet instead of glass.
- the lower carbonate sheet 16b may be a translucent white sheet, whereby it replaces the film 13.
- the different LED elements 8 of the various pathway markers 1 or 2 are connected to the same power supply mains 10 and switched on or off jointly with the control device 5.
- the mains 10 is equipped with the necessary number of wires depending on the embodiment and control requirement.
- the switching on or off of the LED element 8 can be controlled automatically by means of the detectors or alarms 6 monitoring the exit routes or by manual control on the basis of the data received from the detectors or alarms 6.
- the detectors 6 may indicate, for example, the temperature and/or the amount of smoke.
- the detectors 6 may be provided with an analyser which indicates whether the exit route monitored by the detector is safe.
- the detectors or alarms 6 are, in addition, provided with an identifying code which they transmit to the control device 5 together with a code indicating the safety level of the exit route. On the basis of this information, the control device 5 can automatically control the exit route markers or show the required information on the state of the exit routes for manual control.
- marker sign 3, 4 under the same pathway marker 1, 2, which signs can be switched on and off separately.
- a marker sign 3, 4 at the same location can be changed according to the situation. This can be done by interlocking two LED element groups, of which one is switched on.
- the control for changing the marker sign can also be arranged locally in conjunction with the pathway marker, for example, by connecting a controllable switch parallel to one or more of the LED elements in the LED element group.
- the light source elements can also be controlled in a manner known as such to form a running arrow pattern.
- LED elements which can be controlled in such a way that one LED element emits either green or red light. These LED elements are provided with either three-wire input or with a possibility to change the direction of the current with two-wire input.
- the present invention is not limited only to the embodiments described, but features of the different embodiments may be combined and applied in many ways within the scope of protection defined in the claims.
- the background layer or background surface does not have to be pure white, as long as it is sufficiently white for the colour differentiation of the outward appearance pattern.
