Abstract

The invention relates to structural elements of bicycles and more specifically to a handlebar stem which allows a rider to adjust and securely affix the position of the horizontal tube of the bicycle handlebar relative to the vertical handlebar rod during travel. The stem is in the form of a device for connecting the horizontal tube of the bicycle handlebar, pivotally mounted in a bracket, to the vertical handlebar rod, and the handlebar stem is provided with a lock mechanism meant for securing the position of the horizontal tube of the bicycle handlebar relative to the vertical handlebar rod and, according to the invention, the lock mechanism includes a monolithic housing comprised of a flat portion and a tubular portion, the flat portion of which is meant for rotatable attachment to a first horizontal pivot of the handlebar bracket, said pivot being attached to a portion which is opposite to a portion for the mounting of the horizontal tube of the bicycle handlebar, inside the tubular portion of the housing there is disposed a return spring (compression spring), one end of which rests against the bottom of the tubular portion and the other end interacts with the end of a pusher-rod disposed in the tubular portion of the housing so as to be able to move along the axis thereof, on the free end of the pusher, on one horizontal pivot, one end of each of two identical levers is rotatably connected to two diametrically opposite sides of the end of the pusher, the ends of said horizontal pivot are disposed in slots in the housing which are parallel to the axis of the tubular portion of the housing, the other ends of the levers are rotatably connected from two opposite sides of the bracket to the other horizontal pivot of the bracket, and the end of the pusher, which rests against the return spring, has connected to it a cable which freely passes through an opening in a wall of the tubular portion of the housing and is connected to a control handle meant for affixing same to the horizontal tube of the handlebar and installed with the possibility of interacting by means of the cable with the pusher by means of the compression of the compression spring in the housing in order to adjust and securely affix the position of the horizontal tube of the bicycle handlebar relative to the vertical handlebar rod.
