Description
A POLE ASSEMBLY OF A CIRCUIT BREAKER IN AIR INSULATED
SWITCHGEAR
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to a pole assembly of a circuit breaker in air insulated switchgear and more particularly to the pole assembly having integrated components.
BACKGROUND
Generally, a pole assembly primarily consists of a vacuum interrupter along with current carrying components, and either placed inside a break chamber / housing or molded together to form an encapsulated pole assembly.
The break chamber or the housing is usually a hollow chamber made of epoxy resin. The vacuum interrupter and the current carrying components are placed inside the housing and assembled together with connecting parts. The vacuum interrupter is held in position at the top and bottom inside the housing by vacuum interrupter top and bottom support respectively. Here, the current carrying components at the top portion of the pole assembly include the vacuum interrupter top support, connecting piece and the top terminal. Similarly, the current carrying components at the bottom portion of the pole assembly include the vacuum interrupter bottom support, connecting piece and the bottom terminal.
On the other hand, in certain pole assemblies, the break chamber or the housing accommodates three vacuum interrupters within a common semi enclosed enclosure that is dough molded. In another type of pole assemblies, the vacuum interrupter and the current carrying components are molded together to form a single encapsulated pole assembly.
In all of the above referred pole assemblies, the number of current carrying components are more, and that means the number of joints that the pole assembly is encountered with is also more. In addition, the resulting length of the conducting circuit for the circuit breaker is more. This eventually increases the resistance in the current carrying path and reduces the current carrying capacity. Besides this, it leads to localized heating of the parts or components of the pole assembly and induces stress in the components and reduces the life of the components thereof.
Therefore, there is a need for a pole assembly that has reduced number of components yet integrated to functionally serve its intended purpose in the pole assembly. The invention is aimed at providing a break chamber or housing of the vacuum interrupter, for a pole assembly that renders the construction of the pole assembly simple with reduced number of components.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the invention to provide a pole assembly that is simple in construction.
It is another object of the invention to provide a pole assembly that has reduced number of components.
It is yet another object of the invention to provide a pole assembly that has improved performance and efficiency thereof.
Further object of the invention is to provide a pole assembly that exhibits less resistance to the current carrying path.
Another object of the invention is to minimize the forces generated during the short circuit fault in the distribution system where the breaker is placed.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a pole assembly that is durable and more reliable in its operation.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Accordingly the present invention provides a pole assembly of a circuit breaker in air insulated switchgear. The pole assembly of the invention comprises a vacuum interrupter having a fixed contact and a movable contact, and at least one terminal electrically connected to one of the fixed contact or movable contact. The terminal is disposed within a hollow connecting piece electrically connected to the fixed contact or movable contact.
BRIEF DESRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
With reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 shows a pole assembly in accordance with a prior art;
Fig. 2 shows a pole assembly in accordance with another prior art;
Fig. 3 shows a pole assembly in accordance with yet another prior art; and
Figs. 4a to 4c show a pole assembly in accordance with various embodiment of the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The invention is herein described with reference to non-exhaustive exemplary embodiments.
Figs. 1 to 3 illustrate various embodiments or types of pole assemblies in accordance with different prior arts. In Fig. 1 , a pole assembly (100) is shown having a vacuum interrupter (101) disposed inside a break chamber or housing (104). The pole assembly (100) has two support parts namely top support part (102) and bottom support part (103) that supports and positions the vacuum interrupter within the housing (104). The fixed and movable contact of the vacuum interrupter (101) is electrically connected to the respective terminals through connecting components (105).
Fig. 2 shows a pole assembly (200) having vacuum interrupters (201), each disposed within a semi enclosed housing (204). The fixed and movable contacts of the vacuum interrupter are electrically connected to the top terminal plate (202) and bottom terminal plate (203) correspondingly. The top and bottom terminal plate (202 and 203) provides the support for the vacuum interrupter and positions it within the housing (204).
In Fig. 3, a pole assembly (300) is shown having a vacuum interrupter (301), wherein the fixed and movable contacts of the vacuum interrupter (301) is electrically connected to top terminal (302) and bottom terminal (303) correspondingly . The top and bottom terminal (302 and 303) provides the support that is required for the vacuum interrupter and positions it accordingly within the housing (301). The extensions or arms (304) are fixed to the top and bottom terminals (302 and 303) to enable engagement or disengagement.
In the above described pole assemblies of the prior arts, the pole assemblies has more number of individual components including terminals, connecting pieces and vacuum interrupter support. Accordingly, the number of joints coupling or connecting these components is directly proportional, due to which the resistance to the current carrying path increases and also the pole assembly is vulnerable to misalignment of the components or loosening of the connected components.
In Figs. 4a to 4c various embodiments of pole assembly (400) in accordance with the invention is shown. The pole assembly (400) has a vacuum interrupter (401) disposed within a break chamber or housing (404). The fixed and movable contacts of the vacuum interrupter are electrically connected to the top terminal (402) and bottom terminal (403) correspondingly. The top and / or bottom terminals are disposed with a hollow connecting component (405). The hollow connecting component is fixed to the break chamber or housing (404) of the vacuum interrupter (401) by a suitable fastening means. The fastening means include screw or the like that functionally serve to fasten. The top terminal (402) and / or the bottom terminal (403) are encapsulated with an epoxy coating (406). The connecting component also serves as the support for the vacuum interrupters and also positions it within the break chamber or the housing (404).
Here, the pole assembly of the invention has less number of components. Rather the components are integrated to serve different functionality of support, positioning, connecting the fixed or movable contacts of the vacuum interrupter correspondingly to its respective terminals. Accordingly, the resistance to the current carrying path is largely reduced and also the localized heat generated is reduced, thereby reducing the stress on the components. Through these, the pole assembly exhibits improved performance and efficiency and durability besides providing reliable operation.
