Abstract

The present invention relates to a digital broadcast receiving device (1 ) comprising at least one receiver (2) which receives digital broadcast signals that belong to more than one channel, a control unit (3) which assures that a channel selected by the user out of the broadcast signal received by means of the receiver (2) is displayed on a screen (D), and a signal measurement unit (4) which provides the detection of the frequency power and quality of the broadcast signal sent to the screen (D).

Description

A DIGITAL BROADCAST RECEIVING DEVICE COMPRISING A SIGNAL MEASUREMENT UNIT
The present invention relates to a digital broadcast receiving device comprising a signal measurement unit.
In digital broadcast receiving devices, especially in televisions and set-top boxes (STB), drops may occur in the frequency and quality of the received broadcast signal due to various reasons. When the said signal problems occur in the broadcast signal of the present channel being watched by the user, they result in interruptions in the program being watched and/or in disturbing drops in the quality of audio and image signals. Sometimes these problems make it impossible to watch the said channel and require user intervention. This causes user dissatisfaction. In order to solve this problem, various embodiments are developed for increasing the signal strength but the related problem cannot be solved completely.
In the state of the art Korean Patent Application No. KR20060084004, a digital broadcast receiving device is described, which comprises a receiver that can receive digital broadcast signals and a signal quality measurement unit that provides the measurement of the signal quality and strength. In this embodiment, the control unit performs signal scan to determine a main channel and a sub-channel and when the signal quality of the main channel drops below a value predetermined by the manufacturer, the sub-channel replaces the main channel.
The aim of the present invention is the realization of a digital broadcast receiving device wherein the user is prevented from being subjected to low-quality audio and image for a long time and being disturbed when the signal quality of the current channel being watched drops.
The digital broadcast receiving device realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof, comprises a signal measurement unit that measures the signal quality of the channel which is a part of the broadcast signal received by the receiver and which is displayed on a screen according to the user preference. When the value measured by the signal measurement unit drops below a value predetermined by the manufacturer, the control unit shifts to a substitute channel preselected by the user and prevents the user from being disturbed due to the image with poor signal. The substitute channel is selected by the user by means of a menu.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the control unit allows the selection of at least one substitute channel for each channel. Thus, the substitute channels selected for the channels are enabled to be different from each other. Consequently, the user can select a channel, which broadcasts in a genre similar to the general genre of the channel to which the substitute channel will be assigned, as the substitute channel of that channel. For example, shifting suddenly to the news channel when the broadcast signal deteriorates while the user is watching a sports channel is prevented.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the user can create a substitute channels list comprising more than one substitute channel. The user can determine the priority of the substitute channels by himself/herself. Thus, if the signal of some channels in the substitute channels list as well as the signal of the present channel being watched deteriorates, shifting to the next substitute channel with respect to the order of priority is provided and the user is assured to watch a channel having a high quality signal without interruption.
In a version of this embodiment, a single substitute channels list valid for all channels is used. Thus, the necessity of selecting substitute channels for each channel separately is eliminated and ease of utilization is provided.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the receiver enables receiving electronic program information that is sent together with the broadcast signal and that comprises information such as the timetables of the channels, genres and durations of the programs. In this embodiment, when the signal quality of the present channel being watched deteriorates, the control unit determines the substitute channels, wherein programs having the same genre as the program being watched are broadcasted, from among the channels in the substitute channels list and provides the shifting to one of these channels with respect to the order of priority.
In an embodiment of the present invention, external video sources connected to the source inputs of the digital broadcast receiving device can be selected as substitute channel. Thus, when a problem regarding the entire broadcast signal occurs, the control unit automatically shifts to the content in the external video source.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the digital broadcast receiving device comprises more than one receiver. In case that the same channel is present in more than one receiver, as the substitute channel of a channel in a receiver, the user can select the version of that same channel in the other receiver. Thus, even if the signal quality of the related channel drops, the user can continue watching the program, which is currently being watched, without interruption.
In an embodiment of the present invention, when the signal quality of the channel being watched drops below the signal quality threshold value predetermined by the manufacturer, the control unit waits for a threshold time predetermined by the manufacturer before shifting to the substitute channel. Thus, in case that the signal quality improves in a short time, the present channel is prevented from being changed unnecessarily.
In an embodiment of the present invention, after shifting to the substitute channel, the control unit checks the signal quality of the channel, the signal quality of which is deteriorated, at certain intervals and informs the user when the signal quality reaches the signal quality threshold value predetermined by the manufacturer. In a version of this embodiment, the control unit asks the user his/her preference about shifting to the channel being watched priorly, and shifts to the channel being watched priorly with respect to the preference of the user. This eliminates the need of the user for frequently checking the channel being watched priorly and provides ease of utilization.
By means of the present invention, the user is prevented from being adversely affected by the drop of the signal quality of the channel being watched.
The digital broadcast receiving device realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where:

The digital broadcast receiving device (1) comprises at least one receiver (2) which receives digital broadcast signals that belong to more than one channel, a control unit (3) which assures that a channel selected by the user out of the broadcast signal received by means of the receiver (2) is displayed on a screen (D), and a signal measurement unit (4) which provides the detection of the frequency power and quality of the broadcast signal sent to the screen (D). The signal measurement unit (4) instantaneously measures the signal quality of the broadcast being watched and sends the obtained data to the control unit (3) (Figure 1).
In the digital broadcast receiving device (1) of the present invention, when the signal quality of the current channel (A) being watched by the user drops below a signal quality threshold value predetermined by the manufacturer, the control unit (3) allows the current channel (A) to be automatically shifted to a substitute channel (B) predetermined by the user. Thus, when the broadcast signal that belongs to the current channel (A) deteriorates or completely disappears, the shifting to the substitute channel (B) predetermined by the user is performed without requiring any intervention by the user. Consequently, both ease of utilization is provided and the user is prevented from being disturbed by the noisy image he/she is subjected to in the period of time that passes until the user changes the channel (Figure 2).
In an embodiment of the present invention, the control unit (3) allows the selection of at least one substitute channel (B) for each channel. In this embodiment, a different substitute channel (B) can be assigned for each channel. Thus, the substitute channel (B) of each channel can be selected from among the same genre as the channel. For example, a sports channel can be selected as the substitute channel (B) of a sports channel and a news channel can be selected as the substitute channel (B) of a news channel.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the control unit (3) provides the creation of a substitute channels list (L) comprising more than one channel, wherein the order of priority can be determined by the user, and selects the substitute channel (B) to shift to from among the channels in the substitute channels list (L) with respect to the order of priority when the signal quality of the current channel (A) being watched drops below the signal quality threshold value predetermined by the manufacturer. Thus, substitutes are provided also for the substitute channels (B). Upon deciding to shift to the substitute channel (B), the control unit (3) checks the signal qualities of the channels in the substitute channels list (L) with respect to the order of priority and provides shifting to the first channel, the signal quality of which is above the signal quality threshold value predetermined by the manufacturer.
In a version of this embodiment, the control unit (3) provides the creation of a single substitute channels list (L) valid for all channels. Accordingly, the same substitute channels list (L) is used no matter which channel the current channel (A) is. This eliminates the necessity of creating a substitute channels list (L) for each channel and provides ease of utilization.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the receiver (2) provides the program information sent together with the broadcast signal to be received. In this embodiment, the control unit (3) determines the genre of the program on the current channel (A) being watched and when the signal quality of the current channel (A) drops below the signal quality threshold value predetermined by the manufacturer, assigns the channel, on which the program having the same program genre as the current channel (A) is broadcasted, from among the channels in the substitute channels list (L) as the substitute channel (B). Thus, the user can continue watching a program having a similar content without performing any action. This provides ease of utilization and increases customer satisfaction.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the digital broadcast receiving device (1) comprises more than one source input (5). In this embodiment, the control unit (3) allows the external video sources (S) connected to the source inputs (5) to be selected as the substitute channel (B). Thus, in case that a general problem occurs in the received broadcast signal, the content in the external video sources (S) can be easily accessed.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the digital broadcast receiving device (1) comprises more than one receiver (2) enabling signals to be received from more than one digital broadcast source. In this embodiment, the control unit (3) allows the channels in the broadcast signals received from different receivers (2) to be selected as the substitute channels (B) for each other. Thus, the substitute channel (B) of a channel in a receiver (2) can be selected as the same channel in another receiver (2). Consequently, even if the signal quality of the program being watched drops, the program being watched continues without interruption and without user intervention with the broadcast signal received from another receiver (2).
In another embodiment of the present invention, if no substitute channel (B) is assigned for the current channel (A) being watched, the control unit (3) scans the channel names in all of the receivers (2) and assigns the channel having the same name as the current channel (A) as the substitute channel (B).
In an embodiment of the present invention, when the signal quality of the current channel (A) being watched drops below the signal quality threshold value predetermined by the manufacturer, the control unit (3) waits for a threshold time predetermined by the manufacturer and provides shifting to the substitute channel (B) in case that the signal quality does not exceed the signal quality threshold value predetermined by the manufacturer in the threshold time predetermined by the manufacturer. Thus, in case that the deterioration in the signal quality is improved in a short time, the channel being watched is not changed. Consequently, the risk of the user missing the program being watched due to a short-term signal deterioration is eliminated (Figure 2).
In an embodiment of the present invention, after shifting to the substitute channel (B) due to the deterioration in the signal quality of the current channel (A) being watched, the control unit (3) regularly checks the signal quality of the current channel (A) and informs the user when the signal quality of the current channel (A) reaches the signal quality threshold value predetermined by the manufacturer. Thus, the necessity for the user to constantly check whether or not the signal quality of the channel (A), the signal quality of which is deteriorated, is improved in order to return to the program being watched priorly while watching the substitute channel (B) is eliminated (Figure 2).
In different embodiments of the present invention, the digital broadcast receiving device (1) is a digital television or a set-top box (STB).
By means of the present invention, in cases that a drop in the signal quality for the current channel (A) being watched or a complete disappearance of the signal occurs, shifting to the substitute channel (B) selected by the user is provided without user intervention.

Claims (11)

  1. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) comprising at least one receiver (2) which receives digital broadcast signals that belong to more than one channel, a control unit (3) which assures that a channel selected by the user out of the broadcast signal received by means of the receiver (2) is displayed on a screen (D), and a signal measurement unit (4) which provides the detection of the frequency power and quality of the broadcast signal sent to the screen (D), characterized by the control unit (3) which allows the current channel (A) to be automatically shifted to a substitute channel (B) predetermined by the user when the signal quality of the current channel (A) being watched by the user drops below a signal quality threshold value predetermined by the manufacturer.
  2. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in Claim 1, characterized by the control unit (3) which allows the selection of at least one substitute channel (B) for each channel.
  3. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in Claim 1 or 2, characterized by the control unit (3) which provides the creation of a substitute channels list (L) comprising more than one channel, wherein the order of priority can be determined by the user, and selects the substitute channel (B) to shift to from among the channels in the substitute channels list (L) with respect to the order of priority when the signal quality of the current channel (A) being watched drops below the signal quality threshold value predetermined by the manufacturer.
  4. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in Claim 3, characterized by the control unit (3) which provides the creation of a single substitute channels list (L) valid for all channels.
  5. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in Claim 3 or 4, characterized by the receiver (2) which enables the program information sent together with the broadcast signal to be received and by the control unit (3) which determines the genre of the program on the current channel (A) being watched and assigns the channel, on which the program having the same program genre as the current channel (A) is broadcasted, from among the channels in the substitute channels list (L) as the substitute channel (B) when the signal quality of the current channel (A) drops below the signal quality threshold value predetermined by the manufacturer.
  6. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in any one of the above claims, characterized by more than one source input (5) and the control unit (3) which allows the external video sources (S) connected to the source inputs (5) to be selected as the substitute channel (B).
  7. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in any one of the above claims, characterized by more than one receiver (2) which enables signals to be received from more than one digital broadcast source and by the control unit (3) which allows the channels in the broadcast signals received from different receivers (2) to be selected as the substitute channels (B) for each other.
  8. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in any one of the above claims, characterized by the control unit (3) which waits for a threshold time predetermined by the manufacturer and provides shifting to the substitute channel (B) in case that the signal quality does not exceed the signal quality threshold value predetermined by the manufacturer in the threshold time predetermined by the manufacturer when the signal quality of the current channel (A) being watched drops below the signal quality threshold value predetermined by the manufacturer.
  9. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in any one of the above claims, characterized by the control unit (3) which, after shifting to the substitute channel (B) due to the deterioration in the signal quality of the current channel (A) being watched, regularly checks the signal quality of the current channel (A) and informs the user when the signal quality of the current channel (A) reaches the signal quality threshold value predetermined by the manufacturer.
  10. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in any one of the above claims, which is a digital television.
  11. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in any one of the Claims 1 to 9, which is a set-top box (STB).
