Definitions

  • This invention relates to a demarcation arrangement for a sports zone for a sport involving a game playing member.
  • Video playback is also used to determine whether a ball has crossed the line, however it is often difficult to see the position of the ball with respect to the line due to the positioning of the players around the line, such as a goal line.
  • the present invention is derived from the realisation that there exists a need to provide a solution to the problem of identifying whether a game playing member has crossed a line of a sports zone which will assist the referees or umpires, or indeed other officials, in making a decision in this regard. There is also a need to provide a low cost solution to the aforementioned problems which will make the solution universal in all countries.
  • a demarcation arrangement for a sports zone for a sport involving a game playing member comprising:
  • a second demarcation marker positioned adjacent to the first demarcation marker, the first demarcation marker and the second demarcation marker being separated by a distance equal to the size of the game playing member along the length of the arrangement.
  • the first demarcation marker is parallel to the second demarcation marker.
  • the first demarcation marker is a line.
  • the second demarcation marker is also a line.
  • one of the first or second demarcation marker may instead comprise an extended area, or alternatively, both the first and second demarcation markers comprise an extended area.

  • first applicator for applying a first demarcation marker and a second applicator for applying a second demarcation marker, the first and second applicators being separated by a distance equal to the size of the game playing member. Further the distance between the first and second applicators may be adjustable so that the apparatus can be used for multiple sports areas for sports involving different sized game playing members.

  • FIG. 1 there is shown a section of a demarcation arrangement 1 in accordance with an embodiment of the invention having a first line 2 arranged at a first position and a second line 3 spaced apart from and adjacent to the first line 2 at a second position.
  • the second line 3 is arranged parallel to the first line 2 such that the distance between the first line 2 and the second line 3 is maintained along the length of the arrangement 1 .
  • the first and second lines 2, 3 are marked, for example painted, onto the surface of a sports zone or area, for example, football pitch 4, as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings.

  • the separation between the first 2 and second 3 line is equal to the diameter of a football 5 to be played on the football pitch 4.
  • the separation between the first and the second lines 2, 3 would equate to the diameter of the tennis ball. Therefore, the distance between the first line 2 and the second line 3 is equal to the size of the game playing member 5 for that particular sport and the relevant distance of interest is that defined between the two adjacent and opposing edges 6, 7 of the two lines 2, 3.
  • the sports playing member 5 it is also envisaged that different lines could be arranged that would correspond to different angles of, for example a puck, so the distance between a first and a subsequent line may not equate to the diameter of the puck, but may instead correspond to the height (or thickness) of the puck (not shown).

  • the referee or other official can use the arrangement 1 to determine whether the football 5 has crossed the goal line and to establish whether a goal has been scored. This is achieved by use of the second line 3 which extends outside of the area of play (namely, within the goal area 4a in this embodiment) defined by the first line 2, so that the positioning of the football 5 with respect to the first line 2 can be determined with reference to the second line 3, for example where the first line 2 is obscured from the referees view, the second line 3 is more easily viewed by the officials.
  • first line 2 and second line 3 are painted onto the ground either by hand or by means of an apparatus 8 for creating the marker, as shown in Figure 6.
  • the apparatus 8 offers a more accurate and efficient means to apply the marks and comprises a first and second applicator 1 1 a, 1 1 b, such as a first and second wheel, for applying the first demarcation marker 2 and second demarcation marker 3, respectively.
  • the apparatus 8 further comprises a container 9 for containing the marking material, such as paint.
  • An aperture (not shown) is positioned at the base of the container 9 to permit the passage of paint from the inside of the container 9 to the outside of the container 9.
  • the container 9 is arranged to enable the paint to be withdrawn from the container 9 via the aperture in a controlled manner on rotation of the first and second wheels 1 1 a, 1 1 b.
  • the first and second wheels then transfer the paint from the container 9 to the surface of the sports area or zone.
  • the first and second applicators 1 1 a, 1 1 b are separated by a set distance so as to apply the parallel lines 2, 3 in a single movement.
  • a handle 10 is also provided to allow the user to push or guide the apparatus and to cause the first and second wheel 1 1 a, 1 1 b to roll along the surface of the sports area or zone. The distance between the first and second applicators 1 1 a, 1 1 b will equate to the diameter of a game play member 5 to be played in the sports zone 4.
  • first and/or second applicators 1 1 a, 1 1 b are configured to be adjustable via an adjustor 12 so as to vary the relative distance between the first and second applicators 1 1 a, 1 1 b and to accommodate parallel lines of varying widths.
  • This enables the apparatus 8 to be used for tennis courts, football pitches and hockey pitches, for instance, whereby the associated game play members comprise different sizes.
  • either line 2, 3 may be dashed as shown in Figure 4, or may be formed by repeating symbols of another shape to give a more modern appearance to the old style pitch. It is determined that the second marker 3 need not be a line itself, but may be an extended area painted on the ground, but separated from the first marker 2 by a distance equating to the diameter of the game play member 5, as shown in Figure 5.
