Abstract

A lithium ion battery comprises the fluoride of a group III element as the active cathode material. A method of manufacturing aluminium fluoride crystals comprises providing an A1(NO3)3 alcohol solution and an aqueous NH4HF2 solution; adding a surfactant to at least one of the A1(NO3)3 alcohol solution and the aqueous NH4HF2 solution; mixing the A1(NO3)3 alcohol solution with the aqueous NH4HF2 solution, after the surfactant has been added to at least one solution, to form a reaction product dispersed or suspended in a liquid; extracting the reaction product from the liquid; and calcining the reaction product extracted from the liquid.
