Description

DEVICE FOR TRANSFORMING A SCREEN INCLUDING A HDMI PORT INTO A MULTIMEDIA OR PERSONAL COMPUTER
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a device for transforming a screen including a HDMI port into a multimedia computer (SmartTV) or personal computer of a low energy drain and high performance type.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The aim of the present invention is to provide a small size device adapted to constitute a personal computer proper, including a microprocessor (CPU), a graphics processor (GPU), a RAM and ROM Memory, for wireless connectivity operation and with a possibility of enhancing the inner memory by memory cards and a Host USB port, for connection of peripheral devices such as outside hard disk drives, USB webcam, microphones, and son on.
Within the scope of the above mentioned aim, a main object of the present invention is to provide such a device allowing to access the Internet and Intranet networks and transform any TV set into a "connected TV" without the need of changing the TV set.
According to an aspect of the present invention, the above aim and object, as well as yet other objects, which will become more apparent hereinafter, are achieved by a device for transforming a screen including a HDMI port into a multimedia computer or a personal computer, characterized in that said device comprises a microprocessor (CPU), a graphics processor (GPU) and a RAM and ROM Memory.
Said device comprises moreover wireless connectivity means and a Host USB port, to which it is possible to connect peripheral devices such as outside hard disk drives, USB webcams, microphones, and so on. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Further characteristics and advantages of the present invention will become more apparent hereinafter from the following disclosure of a preferred though non exclusive embodiment of the invention, which is illustrated, by way of an indicative but not limitative example, in the accompanying drawings, where:
Figure 1 schematically shows the inventive device applied to a TV screen;
Figure 2 shows the device without the housing therefor;
and
Figure 3 is a functional diagram of the device according to the present invention.
DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
With reference to the number references of the above mentioned figures, the device according to the present invention, which has been generally indicated by the reference number 1 , comprises a microprocessor (CPU), a graphics processor (GPU) and a RAM and ROM Memory.
Said device comprises moreover wireless connectivity means and a Host USB port, to which peripheral devices, such as outside hard disk drives, USB webcams, microphones and so on may be connected.
The device is so designed that its inner memory may be enhanced by memory cards.
The device is powered at 5V/1A directly from the display 2 or through a USB transformer.
The subject device allows the Internet and Intranet networks to be accessed while transforming a target TV 2 into a so called "connected TV" without the need of changing the TV set. In fact, it is sufficient to engage the device 1 in a display 2, which may comprise a TV set, a projector equipment, or a simple screen, and wait for a few seconds for allowing the operating system to be started.
Said operating system, in addition to loading the graphics interface, also loads the related drivers and installed applications.
Among said drivers, the INPUT device driver for interacting with the system is also loaded.
Moreover, the device according to the present invention may be considered, from all operating aspects, as a smartphone or tablet implement, to be directly connected to the screen (of a TV set, video-projector, or display screen) and which is power supplied by the TV set USB port.
With respect to the INPUT devices, several options which are at the start supported by the device Chipset are hereinbelow mentioned.
In actual practice, it is possible to interact through:
- standard Infra-Red or RF telecontrols;
- wireless keyboards and mouse assemblies;
- software keypads (to be installed on smartphone/tablet assemblies);
- radiocontrols with a 3-axis gyroscopic sensor, for example of a Nintendo Wll® controller type;
- voice controls (through a microphone assembly);
- touch screen implements.
The Chipset used in the device according to the present invention could be of any type at present available, provided by a lot of suppliers making the so called SoCs (System on Chip) or specific activity specialized components (DSPs).
The above Chipsets have a very small size and are frequently included in micro-motherboards or cards, designed for smartphone or tablet or multimedia playback applications.
The mentioned DSPs are specifically designed for managing single functions: for example a DSP may be instructed for decoding a HD video stream, which means that, as a high definition movie is played back, then the Chipset will hardware decode (DSP) the video stream, while leaving the CPU in a fully free condition.
Audio, video, Adobe Flash®, 3D and so on DSPs are at present well known.
Thus, owing to the above DSP technology, it is possible to use a CPU with a reduced instruction assembly while optimizing said CPU for a low energy drain.
Thus, the CPU, freed of the demanding operations related to the DSPs, will merely manage the I/O and priority control operations, in addition to managing the drivers and user graphics interface.
The operating system used in this embodiment of the inventive device is Google Android 4.0 ICS®.
By further improving the drivers, it is possible to use any desired operating system.
The related size and power drain render this technology very interesting for different application ranges.
In addition to being suitable for managing conventional multimedia standards, the present device also easily fits or matches to HTML5, Adobe Flash® and Java®.
The Chipset architecture used in this embodiment of the subject device is schematically shown in Figure 3 and comprises: Amlogic 8726-M, CPU ARM Cortex A9 1 Ghz, 512Mb RAM, 4GB Flash ROM, wifi 802.11 b/g/n, GPU Mali-400.
The present device may be used in a broad application range.
Actually, as fitted in a HDMI port, the present device will transform any screen into a large size tablet for navigating in Internet and Intranet networks through Wifi.
Moreover, the subject device allows:
- to access Internet services (social networks, musical databases, video streaming, and so on);
- to chose applications and videogames from online catalogues (app stores);
- to play videogames even in a 3D format;
- to see property photos, movies or play back music directly on large screen (locally or though Internet streaming);
- to consult Office® documents;
- to receive e-mails;
- to video-call or phone through Voice over IP service.
The device has a very small size and may be easily installed and transported from a screen to another screen.
Moreover, the subject device comprises a plurality of memory expanding slots and allows to save multimedia contents on the static memory and play back them at any desired place.
An IPTV service provider may use this HDMI device by customizing related menus and interfaces to provide TV multimedia services, without depending on the screen makers, contrarily to the prior art where such an operation was very expensive.
In fact, any TV set comprises its dedicated widget development and service SDK standard.
The present device, moreover, supports the so called "DRM" (Digital Right Management) technology for providing an absolute safety for copyright protected contents.
Furthermore, the inventive device is a IPTV broadband device supporting a minimum standard required by Majors with respect to digital content protection requirements.
Among the above multimedia digital contents are also included online dailies, magazines, books, and so on.
The subject device may also constitute a desktop personal computer.
In a corporate environment, the subject device is adapted to solve many requirements, for example, as it is configured by a VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) software, it will constitute a so called "thin client" adapted to start all corporate applications (typically Windows® products).
Another possible application is a replacement of conventional personal computers arranged at counter monitors in airport waiting rooms or multimedia kiosks.
Since the subject device comprises a Host USB port, it may also be used for connecting an Ethernet wired USBRJ45 card.
It has been found that the invention fully achieves the intended aim and objects.
In fact, the invention has provided a device suitable for transforming a screen including a HDMI port into a multimedia computer (SmartTV) or personal computer of a low energy drain and high performance type.
In practicing the invention, the used materials as well as the contingent size may be any, according to requirements.
