Description

A SYSTEM AND METHOD TO PRODUCE SCENT FOR CALLER IDENTIFICATIO
FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to a communication system and more particularly to a communication system that produces scent for caller identification.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Typically, an incoming call to a communication device is indicated by visual or audible notifications such as caller's phone number, caller's name, ringtone and etc. The communication device may also customize the caller identification by associating the phone numbers stored in its database or memory with ringtones and pictures. Thus, a user of the communication device may easily identify the incoming call by hearing the ringtone associated with the phone number of the incoming call without even looking at the display of the communication device.
However, in circumstances whereby the communication device is muted, the user of the communication device is unable to recognise the incoming call without looking at the display of the communication device. Thus, it is desirable to provide an alternative notification of an incoming call such as scent notification. An example of using scent notification is disclosed in US Patent Publication No. 2009/0054 16 A1 which relates to a scent dispenser integratable into a portable device, such as a mobile handset. The scent dispenser has a vibrating element configured to vibrate in an ultrasound frequency range for dispensing a scent material. Scent dispensing can be in response to an incoming signal received by a mobile handset, but scent dispensing can also be controlled by a user. The scent material is stored in a compartment having a channel with a valve and the vibrating element can be used to open the valve for replenishing the scent material when the vibration is in a low frequency range such as 1-10 Hz. The vibrating element can also be used to produce audio signals. Thus, the scent dispenser can also be integrated with a sound producing unit in a mobile electronic device. However, such scent dispenser system does not disclose a mechanism of associating different scents to different phone numbers to allow the user to easily recognize the incoming call. Therefore, there is a need to provide a communication device with a scent notification for identifying an incoming call. Moreover, there is a need to associate different scent with different phone numbers to allow a user to easily recognize an incoming call.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFFERED EMBODIMENT
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will be described herein below with reference to the accompanying drawings. In the following description, well known functions or constructions are not described in detail since they would obscure the description with unnecessary detail.
Referring to FIG. 1 , there is shown a communication system according to an embodiment of the present invention. The system includes a mobile device (100) and a server (200). The system allows scent notification as caller identification for an incoming call received by the mobile device (100). Moreover, the system is able to associate different scents with different phone numbers stored in the mobile device (100).
The mobile device (100) is connected to a telecommunication network which allows the mobile device (100) to receive incoming calls and make outgoing calls. Preferably, the mobile device is connected to the telecommunication network through a base station. The mobile device (100) includes an interface component (110), a scent control component (120), a scent dispenser (130), a user interface component (140) and a memory (150). Moreover, the mobile device (100) also includes any suitable hardware, software or any combination thereof to transmit, receive and/or process communications in the telecommunication network.
The interface component (110) is used to communicate scent information with the server (200). More particularly, the interface component (110) is used to send the scent identifications, receive scent mixture formulas from the server (200) based on the scent identifications and transmit the scent mixture formulas to the scent control component (120). The scent identification can either be a scent name or a scent number, whereas the scent mixture formula is a percentage of each base scent in the total composition of a scent mixture.
The scent control component (120) is used to identify the scent identification and its corresponding scent mixture formula associated with the phone number of the incoming call and thereon, convert the scent mixture formula into Scent control signals to indicate the respective base scents to be dispensed by the scent dispenser (130).
The scent dispenser (130) is used to dispense a scent mixture based on the scent control signals received from the scent control component (120). The scent dispenser (130) includes a plurality of scented materials controlled by a driver component. Each scented material dispenses a different base scent such as orange scent, rose scent, and etc. When the scent dispenser (130) receives the control signals from the scent control component (120), the driver component in the scent dispenser (130) controls the amount of base scents to be dispensed based on the scent mixture formula. The dispensing of the scent mixture is similar to printing mechanism, wherein a plurality of colour ink cartridges dispenses a suitable amount of ink to produce the intended colour on a piece of paper. For instance, in order to print out the colour purple on a paper, the printer dispenses red colour ink and blue colour ink from the ink cartridges. As for the scent dispenser (130), the driver component triggers each scented material to simultaneously dispense a suitable amount of base scent for a predetermined period time to produce the scent mixture. The user interface component (140) is used to enable a user to select and associate the scent identification with at least one phone number stored in the memory (150) of the mobile device (100). The user interface (140) can either be a keypad, a touch screen panel or any other input devices.
The memory (150) is used to store a list of phone numbers associated with scent identifications and scent mixture formulas. The memory (150) is connected to the interface component (110) and user interface component (140).
The server (200) is used to provide the scent mixture formula to the mobile device (100) based on the scent identification. The server (200) includes a scent quantifier (210) and a scent mixture formula storage (220). The scent quantifier (210) is used to retrieve a scent mixture formula from the scent mixture formula storage (220) based on the scent identification. The scent mixture formula is a percentage of each base scent in the total composition of a scent mixture. For instance, a scent identification of 001 is a scent mixture of 50% base scent 1, 10% base scent 3, and 40% of base scent 6. Each scent mixture formula and its corresponding scent identification is stored in the scent mixture formula storage (220) by the scent quantifier (210). Table 1 below shows an example of a list of scent mixture formulas stored in the scent mixture formula storage according to its corresponding scent identification.

100 20% 20% 0% 30% 30% 10% Referring now to FIG. 4, there is shown a flowchart of a method for associating a scent to a phone number according to an embodiment of the present invention. Initially, as in step 401, at least one phone number stored in the memory of the mobile device (100) is selected and associated with a scent identification by the user through the user interface component (140). Thus, one scent identification can be associated with one or more phone numbers. The phone numbers and its scent identifications are stored in the memory (150) of the mobile device (100). Thereon, in steps 402 and 403, the scent control component (120) of the mobile device (100) downloads the phone numbers with its scent identifications from the memory (150) and transmits the phone numbers and the corresponding scent identifications to the server (200) through the interface component (110). In step 404, the scent quantifier (210) identifies the scent mixture formula based on the scent identifications received from the interface component (110). The scent mixture formula is a percentage of each base scent in the total composition of a scent mixture. The scent identifications and its corresponding scent mixture formulas are then transmitted to the scent control component (120) through the interface component (110) as in step 405. In step 406, each scent mixture formula is associated with the phone numbers stored in the memory (150) of the mobile device (100) based on the respective scent identification.
Referring now to FIG. 5, there is shown a flowchart of a method for identifying an incoming call according to an embodiment of the present invention. Initially, the mobile device (100) receives an incoming call as in step 501. Thereon, the mobile device (100) determines whether the phone number of the incoming call is stored in its memory (150) as in decision 502. If the phone number is not stored in its memory (150), the mobile device (100) displays the phone number as in step 503. Otherwise, the scent control component (120) is triggered to perform a search on the scent mixture formula associated with the phone number of the incoming call as in step 504. Once the scent control component (120) has obtained the scent mixture formula, the scent control component (120) converts the scent mixture formula into scent control signals as in step 505. The control signals are transmitted to the scent dispenser (130) to dispense the respective base scents based on the scent mixture formula as in step 506. When the scent dispenser (130) receives the control signals from the scent control component (120), the driver component in the scent dispenser (130) triggers each scented material to simultaneously dispense a suitable amount of base scent based on the control signals for a predetermined period of time. The dispensing of the respective base scents based on the control signals produces the intended scent mixture.
While embodiments of the invention have been illustrated and described, it is not intended that these embodiments illustrated and describe all possible forms of the invention. Rather, the words used in the specifications are words of description rather than limitation and various changes may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
