Abstract

The invention relates to a method and a device for detecting an occupied or free state of a track section by means of a track circuit (3), wherein at least one evaluation signal (1.1, 1.2; 8.1, 8.2) of the track circuit (3) is compared with a threshold value (UPull-in/UDrop-out; US), the overshooting or undershooting of which is a first criterion for the occupied or free state. Erroneous messages on the basis of the first criterion, more particularly in the case of a greatly fluctuating axle shunt effect, are avoided according to the invention by virtue of the fact that, as a second criterion, a rate of change of the signal profile of the evaluation signal (1.1, 1.2; 8.1, 8.2) is additionally determined and compared with a comparison value, upon the overshooting of which and/or upon the overshooting and undershooting of the threshold value (UPull-in/UDrop-out; US) the occupied state is detected.
