DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The present invention provides a sports networking platform. In the following detailed description of the embodiments of the invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings that form a part hereof, and in which are shown by way of illustration specific embodiments in which the invention may be practiced. These embodiments are described in sufficient detail to enable those skilled in the art to practice the invention, and it is to be understood that other embodiments may be utilized and that changes may be made without departing from the scope of the present invention. The following detailed description is, therefore, not to be taken in a limiting sense, and the scope of the present nvention is defined only by the appended claims.
The terms 'members', 'sports enthusiast' and 'users' are interchangeably used throughout the document.
Figure 1 is a block diagram illustrating an exemplary sports networking system 100. The sports networking system 100 includes a server 102, a network 116 and client devices 118A- N. The server 102 includes a processor 104, a memory 106 and a network interface 114. The memory 106 includes a social networking platform 108. The client devices 118A-N are connected to the server 102 via the network 116.
The sports networking platform 108 is an online platform for sports enthusiasts to connect and communicate in a sports networking space. The sports networking platform 108 includes a profile module 110 and an event management module 112 stored in the form of
instructions that when executed by the processor 104 enables the sports enthusiasts to connect and communicate in a sport networking space.
In an exemplary operation, the profile module 110 enables an interested sports enthusiast to create a personal profile page in the sports networking platform 108 by registering his user id and password for the sports networking space 108. The personal profile page may include name, age, sex, interested sport type, rankings, club membership and so on. The personal profile page is tagged with instantaneous location of the member (e.g., obtained from Global Positioning System or cellular identifier).
The event management module 112 enables members (herein after organizing members) to create a sports event associated with a sport type (e.g., football, tennis, basketball, etc.) via their personal profile page. The event management module 112 may schedule the sports event associated with the sports type at a specified sports venue based on the request from the organizing member. The event management module 112 determines members who are interested in playing a sport associated with the sport type based on the profile information associated with the members. For example, the profile information may indicate sport type which a member is interested in playing, a particular ranking associated with the member, club memberships and soon. The event management module 112 may select the members for the sports event if predefined criteria associated with the sports event are satisfied. For example, the organizing member while creating a sports event may specify a sports type, a minimum ranking, and club membership required for participating in the sports event. Accordingly, the event management module 112 may determine members who are interested in playing the sports of the sports type, have minimum ranking and club membership. Additionally, the event management module 112 may filter the members satisfying the pre-defined criteria based on schedule of the personal calendar of each of the members. That is, the event management module 112 determines whether any of the members is engaged in any other activity during the scheduled sports event. If so, the event management module 112 may eliminate such members from the members who satisfy the pre-defined criteria from inviting to participate in the scheduled sports event.
Further, the event management module 112 obtains current location of each of the members based on location information tagged to the profile information. The location information associated with the members may indicate current location of the members in real time. The
current location may change with time. The current location corresponds to instantaneous location of the member where the member is currently located. The location information can be obtained from GPS receiver of a client device or a cellular identifier. The event management module 112 determines whether the current location of one or more members falls within a first pre-defined radius from the sports venue and selects one or more members from the determined members whose current location falls within the specific radius from the sports venue. Accordingly, the event management module 112 automatically triggers an invitation to participate in the scheduled sports event to each of the selected members. The first pre-defined radius may be specified by the organizing member while creating the sports event. The first pre-defined radius may cover a city, a state, multiple states, county, and so on.
Further, the event management module 112 displays the invitation to participate in the scheduled sports event on a profile page of each of the selected members. For example, the invitation may include accept, or reject option displayed on the profile page of respective invited members along with list of invited/participating members and information associated the sports event. The respective members may select the accept option if the respective members would like to participate in the event. The event management module 112 continuously determines whether any of the invited members have accepted the invitation to participate in the scheduled sports event. Accordingly, the event management module 112 displays notification on profile page of the invited members and the organizing member indicating that the one or more invited members have accepted invitation to participate in the scheduled sports event.
Furthermore, the event management module 112 may track the location of the members who have confirmed participation in the scheduled sports event. The event management module 112 also determines whether the location of any of the members is falling outside a second pre-defined radius. If the location of any of the members is falling outside the second predefined radius, then the event management module 112 displays notification on the profile page of the organizing member. In some embodiments, the event management module 112 may display location of the member(s) who has moved out of the second pre-defined radius on a geo-spatial map rendered in the profile page of the organizing member.
It may happen that, when any member moves out of the second pre-defined radius, the member may back out from participating from the scheduled sports event. In such a case, the event management module 112 may reconfirm with the member(s) who has moved out of the second pre-defined radius as whether they would still make it to the scheduled sports event. This is would prevent false participation in the sports event. Accordingly, the event management module 112 may display a notification indicating that the member(s) have moved out of the second pre-defined radius but would participate in the scheduled sports event or have backed out.
When a member is travelling from one location to another, the event management module 112 may determine whether any sports venue associated with a sports type is in close proximity to the current location of the member who is interested in playing the sport of the sport type. If the any sports venue is located in close proximity, then the event management module 112 would notify the member regarding the sports venue. The event management module 112 may also determine whether any of the members of the sports networking platform 108 is currently playing a sport at the sports venue based on location of the members of the sports networking platform 108. If any of the members of the sports networking platform 108 are currently present at the sports networking platform 108, the event management module 112 may send an instantaneous notification (e.g., a pop notification) to the member indicating the other members of the sports networking platform 108 are present at the sports venue. If the member wishes to play sport at the sports venue, then the event management module 112 may notify the members who are present at the sports venue via a notification message indicating that said member is wishes to play sport at the sports venue.
Although, the sports networking platform 108 is illustrated as including the profile module 110 and the event management module 112, it can be noted that the sports networking platform 108 may include additional modules for providing various other functionalities to the members of the sports networking platform as shown in Figure 2.

The rating module 211 enables the members to maintain their individual performance record in a particular sport and share the same over network which may be used for the benefits of members like creating ratings for a particular sport. Rating is basically an average of the scores posted by the members after each event. Once these scores are posted, the rating module 211 rates them based on their scores. For example, the ratings may be computed at the end of every month which means it would be an average of the scores played during the month. This enables rankings of "non-professional and non-amateur" sports people across the globe. The rating scheme would apply for all sport as long as the scores are posted. Eventually, the rating would encompass 'New York No 1' to 'USA No (similarly other cities and countries as well) and "World No 1" in a particular geographic area and in a particular category using the rating database 228. The top rated sport/event may be provided with various incentive and reward programs.
The rating module 21 enables the members to rate the sports venue after completion of the sports event. Figure 14 is a process flowchart 1400 illustrating an exemplary method of managing sports event in a sports networking environment, according to one embodiment. At step 1402, a sports event associated with the sport type is scheduled at a sports venue when a request for creating the sports event is received from an organizing member of a sports networking platform. For example, the organizing member may click on a create event link on a profile page upon which the server 102 displays a create event page on the client device 104A. Then, the organizing member may select a sports type, a sports venue, date and time, and specific criteria (e.g., minimum ranking required, club membership, radius around the sports venue for inviting one or more members and so on) from the create event page. Accordingly, the server 102 schedules the sports event at the sports venue. It can be noted that the organizing member has not invited any members to participate in the sports event. Hence, at
step 1404, a plurality of members of the sports networking platform who are interested in playing a sport of the sports type are determined based on profile information associated with the plurality of members. In some embodiments, the server 102 may identify the plurality of members whose profile information meets sports type, ranking, club membership and so on specified by the organizing member while creating the sports event.
At step 1406, current location of each of the plurality of members is obtained. The current location may be real time location of the each of the plurality of members. In one exemplary implementation, the current location is obtained from GPS data of the client device associated with respective members. In another exemplary implementation, the current location is obtained from cellular identifier associated with a cell to which the client device associated with the respective members is connected. In yet another exemplary implementation, the current location is obtained from 'check-in status' of the respective members.
At step 1408, it is determined whether the current location of each of the members falls within a pre-defined radius around the sports venue. If it is determined whether the current location falls within the pre-defined radius around the sports venue, then at step 1410, one or more members are selected from the plurality of members whose current location is within the pre-defined radius, otherwise the process 1400 is terminated. At step 1412, an invitation to participate in the scheduled sports event to each of the selected members is automatically triggered. At step 1414, the invitation to participate in the scheduled sports event is displayed on a profile page associated with each of the selected members.
At step 1416, a geo-spatial map indicating the profile information and the current location of each of the invited members is displayed on the client device of the organizing member upon triggering the invitation to participate in the scheduled sports event. Additionally, at least member who has accepted the invitation to participate in the scheduled sports event is determined and a notification indicating acceptance of the invitation is sent to the client device of the organizing member.
