Abstract

A vehicle includes a transformable body having at least two configurations. The first body configuration resembles a fastback-style vehicle. The second body configuration resembles a wagon-style vehicle that includes a fully enclosed passenger space and cargo area. The third body configuration resembles a pickup truck that includes a fully enclosed passenger space and an open cargo area. The aerodynamic fastback body configuration reduces vehicle wind resistance, thus increasing fuel efficiency. In wagon configuration, the rear section assembly can be elevated to increase both passenger and cargo space. For hauling oversized cargo, the rear section assembly can be transformed to resembles an open cargo area of a truck.

Description

This invention address the problem by having a transformable rear section, which can be adjusted by the user to either increase the rear passenger head room and cargo space, or to haul oversized cargo that require an open cargo area.

A Detail Description Of Preferred Embodiments
FIG. 6 shows a vehicle (18) having a flexible passenger vehicle body (16) in accordance with the present invention. The vehicle body (16) includes a fastback style body shell (12).
The body shell (12) has a rear opening (98)(FIG. 5) in front of a tailgate (50), and a set of door panels (90) closing door openings (92). The body shell (12) shown in FIG. 6, represents one of many different body shells that can be used with the present invention. For example, the location and number of pillars , the number of doors and other structures may be different for different body shells.
The vehicle body (16) is capable of three different body configurations. The basic fastback configuration is shown in FIG. 6 and FIG. 3. From this body configuration the vehicle can be transformed into a wagon configuration as shown in FIG. 1, and a pickup truck configuration as shown in FIG. 5.
when the vehicle is in fastback body configuration as shown in FIG. 3, a generally rectangular rear center window assembly (22) connected to a fixed roof (99) with hinges (10) is positioned in contact with the top of a tailgate (50), and a pair of opposing triangular panels (30) also positioned at a similar angle, collectively enclosing the body shell's rear opening (98), thus forming a smooth sloping fastback.
FIG. 2 shows the vehicle body in transition between a wagon configuration and a fastback configuration. The rear center window assembly (22) pivoted up to near horizontal position, becomes the rear extension of the wagon's roof .
The tailgate window (51) raised up to be in contact with the rear center window assembly (22), along with the tailgate (50) defining the rear end of the wagon.
A pair of opposing retractable rear side windows (40) raised up fully, and the triangular panels (30) supported by a strut (70) positioned at an angle similar to the rear side windows (40), collectively forming portion of smooth rear side surfaces of the wagon.
FIG. 4 shows the transition between a fastback configuration and a truck configuration (FIG. 5). To begin the transition, the tailgate (50) will open up just enough for the pair of triangular panels (30) to be folded down to the inside of the rear opening.
The rear center window assembly (22) is comprised of a forward part (20) and a rearward part (21).
The rear center window assembly (22) is pivoted down, while the rearward part (21) is detached from the forward part (20), until both parts reach a near vertical position, and form the center portion of the partition, which separates an enclosed passenger space from an open cargo area. The two parts (20, 21) that compose the rear center window assembly (22) can be either fully separated, or still connected with linkages.
FIG. 5 shows a pair of opposing side partition panels comprised of main panels (60) and sub panels (61), hinged from inside of the body shell, opened up to meet the sides of the rear center window assembly (22), collectively they form a fully water-tight partition. The hinges (62) in this example represents one of many different locations that can be used with the present invention. For example, the location can be on the the truck bed, or on the rear center window assembly (22), and the sub panels (61) can be retractable or fixed.
FIG. 1~FIG. 5 show a preferred embodiment of the present invention. This embodiment is characterized by a trapezoid-shaped rear opening in front of the tailgate (50). FIG. 7 shows the differences in back view, between two types of rear openings, when the vehicle is in fastback configuration.
On the left, is a body shell with a trapezoid-shaped rear opening as described above, which has the triangular panel (30) in between the rear center window assembly (22) and an angled C-pillar (88a).
While on the right, is a body shell with a generally rectangular rear opening, that has only the rear center window assembly (22) and a near vertical C-pillar (88b).
FIG. 8 and FIG. 9 show the back view and perspective view of a vehicle in wagon configuration in accordance with the present invention, with another type of C-pillars (88b) as shown on the right side of FIG. 7. The lower portions have to be moved outward, to form a more natural looking tapered side surfaces, otherwise these surfaces will be flat and vertical.
In the real world, a product has to be compromised between functionality and simplicity. With this present invention, a vehicle can be transformed between three configurations, or only two configurations, i.e. from a fastback configuration into a wagon configuration, or from a fastback configuration into a truck configuration. While considering a fastback/truck design, the rectangular rear opening is preferred, because it will need less parts than the vehicle shown in FIG. 5. The pair of triangular panels (30) will not be needed, and the side partition panels (60) and (61) can be made in one piece, and hinged at the rear center window assembly (22). Also the retractable tailgate window (51) (FIG. 2), and the retractable rear side windows (40) (FIG. 2) can be eliminated, too.
For the same reason, a fastback/wagon transformable design can have one piece rear center window assembly (22), instead of the two-piece parts (20, 21) as shown in FIG. 2.
Although the present invention has been described in connection with particular embodiments thereof, it is to be understood that various modifications, alterations, and adaptations may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention set forth in the following claims.
