  • the relative orientation of the major flaps 28A, 24A, 28B, 24B, minor flaps 26A, 22A, 26B, 22B, article orientation and relative position of the access structure may be further understood when consideration is given to a packaging machine (also referred to as packer) that may be used to assemble a package.
  • Articles A (such as cans or bottles) may typically be loaded into the ends of a carton by being slid along on their bases and pushed or corralled into the ends of an open carton. The or each end of a carton may be held open as the carton 90 is moved along, on a bottommost panel, alongside a stream of articles.
  • the first or second side panel 18, 14 may be bottommost when the carton 90 is loaded in a packaging machine.
  • the articles A are positioned such that their height extends between what have been referred to as the first and second side walls 18, 14 albeit that during packaging these panels 18, 14 may be bottommost and topmost (and vice versa) respectively.
  • the loading orientation of the articles is relatively fixed by the packaging machine, articles A are not rolled into cartons, but are pushed along their bases; furthermore, the major end flaps of the carton are preferably oriented to be topmost and bottom most (rather than to the sides).
  • the access structure has been described as being formed in the first side panel 18 and composite end wall, it will be understood, that alternatively or additionally, the access structure could be formed at least in part, in the second side panel 14. Whereas predominantly it is intended for the access structure to allow access to the articles A when the carton 90 is disposed on its closed end (as illustrated in Figure 8) or when the carton 90 is disposed on its second side wall 14. It will also be realised that the access structure once deployed may effectively serve to allow access to the articles A when the carton 90 is disposed on its first side panel 18, top panel 16 or bottom panel 12 (any of which panels 18, 16, 12, when the carton 90 is so oriented could then be considered as being the "bottom panel").
  • the remaining part of the opened end wall portion 23B in Figure 8 is disposed alongside two vertically oriented articles A.
  • the articles A closest to the retaining part 23B that remains after detachment of the access structure are upright relative to that retaining part 23B.

Abstract
