Description
BEVERAGE DISPENSER WITH IDENTIFICATION CODE
Field of the invention
The present invention relates to beverage dispensers and method for facilitating consumer operator-dispenser interactions.
Background of the invention
Beverage dispensers are usually able to prepare and dispense hot and cold beverages by interaction of at least one beverage ingredient with a diluent, usually water. The beverage ingredient can be stored in the machine in a multi-dose container, from which a dose of ingredient is withdrawn for each beverage preparation and that is further processed for the preparation of a beverage.
Today beverage dispensers present more and more functionalities to be able to satisfy the consumers. The number of beverages that can be delivered by one dispenser has increased - in particular due to the possibility to combine different beverage ingredients during the beverage preparation. New services are proposed to the consumer during the preparation of the beverage in particular through the screens of the dispensers ; these services are often accessible through connection of the dispenser to a network, preferably Internet. This connection can also enable regular upgrading of the dispenser and a rapid and easy maintenance of the dispenser.
These improvements lead to more and more complicated and expensive beverage dispensers due to the presence of screens and the connection to a network like Internet to provide the different services and functionalities. Another counterpart is that these dispensers cannot be largely widespread in areas where no network connection is possible.
The object of the present invention is to propose an inexpensive beverage dispenser able to provide new functionalities without connection of the dispenser to a network.
Summary of the invention
According to a first aspect, the invention concerns a beverage dispenser presenting at least one identification code , said identification code being readable by a mobile telecommunication device and said device having access to Internet. The identification code provides information about an Internet address, preferably about an URL (Uniform Resource Locator) address. The identification code is preferably a QR™ code. Yet any other code able to provide information about an Internet address can be used like, for example codes like Data Matrix, Microsoft Tag (High Capacity Color Barcode), Aztec, Trillcode, Quickmark, Shotcode,
mCode, Beetagg, ... Usually the identification code is printed on a label attached on the dispenser or is drawn on the dispenser. The code is preferably positioned on the dispenser in a place that is immediately visible place for a consumer.
An example of mobile telecommunication device can be a cell phone, a mobile phone, an IPHONE™, an IPAD™ or any type of personal data assistant (PDA). Preferably the mobile telecommunication device is eq u i p pe d wi t h a camera or a scanner. The mobile telecommunication device is preferably equipped with a decoding application of the identification code so that the information about an Internet address can be derived from the code.
According to an embodiment the invention can be applied on a dispenser that is not linked to a network. No information can be automatically downloaded by the dispenser from a network. For this reason the cost of the dispenser is lower.
According to another embodiment the invention can be applied on a dispenser that has no screen interface. No information can be provided to the customer who wants to prepare a beverage from the dispenser except through buttons in the face of the dispenser. For this reason the cost of the dispenser is lower.
The invention can be applied to beverage dispensers preparing beverages by any type of interaction between a food ingredient and a diluent. The food ingredient can be a soluble food ingredient concentrate like a soluble powder or a liquid concentrate or it can be an infusable food ingredient like a roast and ground coffee powder or tea leaves. The diluent can either dissolve the soluble food ingredient concentrate or extract the infusable food ingredient. The diluent is usually water. The invention particularly applies to a beverage dispenser that stores the beverage ingredient(s) under the form of bulk ingredient(s) stored in multi-dose container(s).
According to a second aspect the invention concerns a method for operating a beverage dispenser such as described hereabove, said method comprising the steps of :
- reading the identification code of the dispenser by means of a mobile telecommunication device having access to Internet,
- automatically getting access to the Internet site associated with the identification code of the dispenser through Internet connection,
- getting access to information relative to the dispenser
- using said information to operate the dispenser.
Preferably the method is implemented with a mobile telecommunication device presenting a screen.
The information provided through the Internet connection can relate to at least one of the
following fields :
- the maintenance of the dispenser, preferably the refilling or the cleaning operation of the dispenser.
- the preparation of a beverage,
- the presentation of a beverage.
- the beverage susceptible to be prepared by the dispenser, in particular nutritional information.
The method for operating the beverage dispenser can be implemented either by the customer for getting information about the beverages produced by the dispenser or by an operator for getting instructions on beverages preparation and presentation or for filling and cleaning the dispenser.
Brief description of the drawings
The characteristics and advantages of the invention will be better understood in relation to - Figures 1 and 2 illustrate a beverage dispenser and a method according to the present invention.
- Figure 3 illustrates the screen of a cell phone during the step of ordering a beverage from the dispenser of the present invention.
- Figure 4 illustrates the screen of a cell phone during the step of refilling or the maintenance of the dispenser.
Detailed description of the drawings
Figure 1 illustrates a beverage dispenser 1 . The dispenser presents input means 1 1 , preferably buttons, for selecting different type of beverages and a dispensing area 12 in which a drinking cup 6 can be placed for receiving the ordered beverage. The dispenser presents on its front face an identification code presenting the form of a two-dimensional barcode, preferably a QR™ code 2. The identification code 2 can be read by a mobile telecommunication device like a cell phone 3 preferably by means of the camera 31 of the cell phone. The cell phone comprises a QR™ code decoder to get access to an Internet address associated to the QR™ code. The cell phone 3 can get a communication with Internet 4 based on the QR™ code as illustrated in Figure 2. The Internet site linked to the QR™ code is also in communication with a server 5 and at least one database 6 that can store information about the dispenser such as :
- information about the beverage susceptible to be dispensed by the dispenser 1 , like compositions of the beverage ingredients, origins of the ingredients, nutritional information about
the dispensed beverages. If the dispenser is able to dispense different types of coffees, the consumer can have access on detailed information about the strength, the taste, the aroma of the different coffees to make his choice. These information can indicate to the customer for each input means 1 1 which beverage can be prepared and provide corresponding details about said beverage as illustrated in Figure 3.
- information about recipes for preparing beverages from different beverage ingredient, e..g by selecting the production of different beverages in a specific order (e.g. production of a cappuccino be first selecting the production of frothed milk and then selecting the production of a coffee and its dispensing in the frothed milk). For example the order of selection of the input means 1 1 can be successively presented on the cell phone.
- information about the presentation of a beverage in particular for drawing on the foam at the top of a beverage prepared with the dispenser (e.g. latte art where cocoa powder or liquid chocolate is poured on the foam of a beverage),
- information and instruction about the maintenance of the dispenser for opening and refilling the beverage ingredient containers or for dismantling and cleaning the internal part of the dispenser.
All the information can appear on the screen of the cell phone. The instructions may be particularly easy to implement if the cell phone comprises a screen on which instructions in form of photos or films can be showed . In such a configuration it is no more necessary to manufacture a beverage dispenser with a screen : the screen of the cell phone can provide the customer with the same information by direct access to the Internet site. It is also not necessary to manufacture a beverage dispenser with a network telecommunication device : the access to Internet through the cell phone provides the latest information about the dispenser and its use.
Figure 3 illustrates the type of nutritional information that can be downloaded on the screen 32 of the cell phone from the dispenser Internet site after recognition of the dispenser identification code.
Figure 4 illustrates the use of augmented reality technology to help the operator to apply instructions about the maintenance of the dispenser. By simultaneously filming the dispenser with the camera of the cell phone and linking the cell phone to the Internet site related to the dispenser, the operator can get real information 33 on the way to maintain the dispenser. The augmented reality can consist in inserting additional information into the field of view on the screen of the cell phone while it films the dispenser. For example, labels can be displayed on parts of the dispenser view to clarify operating instructions for an operator who is performing maintenance on the system. The screen of the cell phone can also include images of hidden objects to help the operation.
The present invention presents the advantage of proposing very simple dispensers in which costly devices like a screen or internal connection to a network can be avoided. The dispenser can simply hire the simplest functions of a dispenser like input means for selection of a beverage and the core beverage preparation devices like diluent and beverage ingredient supplies, pump, heating and cooling devices, mixing chambers. The information specific to the implementation of the dispenser can be downloaded through a cell phone by means of the dispenser identification code when the customer is in front of the dispenser.
Another advantage of the present invention is that the consumer or the operator can always get access to the more recent information or instruction relative to the dispenser without having to wait for an updated version of the dispenser.
Another advantage is that printed manuals of the dispenser are no more requested.
