  • Each side 12 has a plurality of planar elongate blinds 14 extending thereacross, and a moving mechanism 16 arranged to simultaneously pivot together all of the blinds of the respective side 12 about a longitudinal axis of each respective blind 14.
  • the assembly -10_ is dimensioned to fit on a desk or bedside table (not shown), and has a height X of approximately 45 cm, and a width Y on each side of approximately 20 cm.
  • the frame 11 is supported on four legs 13 which provide a space between the bottom of the frame 11 and a surface on which the assembly- 10 is located.
  • a moving mechanism 16 is shown in more detail in Figs. 3 and 4.
  • Each moving mechanism 16 comprises a worm drive including a worm 18 located on a worm shaft 20 and operable with a worm gear 22.
  • the worm shaft 20 rotates about a vertical axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the blades.
  • the worm gear is located in a slot 26 in one of the blinds 14, and rotates coaxially with the respective blind 14.
  • the worm shaft 20 is connected to a handle 24 at a lower in use end thereof.
  • the blinds 14 are interconnected by vertically extending rods 30 such that the blinds simultaneously pivot together.
  • the inclination of the blinds 14 on a side 12 can be adjusted as follows.
  • the user twists the handle 24 either clockwise or anticlockwise to rotate the worm shaft 20 about its axis. This causes rotation of the worm gear 22, which in turn causes pivoting of the blind 14 to which the worm gear 22 is attached.
  • This in turn pushes or pulls the pair of rods 30, depending on the direction the handle is twisted, thereby adjusting the inclination of the adjacent blinds 14.
  • the blinds 14 can be adjusted from a fully “down” closed position as shown in Fig. 2, in which there is a slight gap between the adjacent blinds to allow some light to escape, to a fully closed “up” position (not shown), via a fully open position as shown in Fig. 4.
  • a user By closing or partly closing the blinds 1 of the assembly 10 from the fully open position, a user can thereby control the light level emitted from the assembly 10, as well as the inclination at which the light is emitted.
  • the user can control each side of the assembly 10 individually using a respective moving mechanism 16, such that the blinds 14 may be at different inclinations on each side.
  • Figs. 5 and 6 show a second lamp shade assembly 110 in accordance with the invention.
  • the second assembly 110 is similar to the first assembly 10, and includes blinds 114.
  • the blinds 114 extend substantially vertically in use, and the inclination, and therefore the inclination of emitted light, can be adjusted by a user.
  • the second assembly 110 includes a moving mechanism comprising a worm drive, which is similar to the worm drive of the first embodiment, and includes a worm 118 located on a worm shaft 120 and operable with a worm gear 122.
  • the worm drive is oriented such that the worm shaft 120 extends horizontally, and the worm gear 122 rotates about a shaft extending vertically through the blinds 114.
  • Each worm shaft 120 includes a handle 124, which extends through a comer part of the frame 1 1, approximately half way from the bottom of the frame 111 in use. The inclination of the blinds 114 is adjusted in a similar manner to those in the first assembly 10 by twisting the handles 24.
  • Figs. 7 and 8 show a third lamp shade assembly 210 including blinds 214 and a moving mechanism 216.
  • This embodiment is similar to the first assembly 10, except that handles, worm gear and a worm shaft have been omitted from the moving mechanism 216.
  • a user can directly turn a wheel 222 by hand, which wheel 222 is similar to the worm gear 22, 122.
  • This embodiment is less expensive to manufacture compared to the first or second above described embodiments, while providing similar function.
  • Figs. 9 to 11 show a fourth lamp shade assembly 310.
  • the moving mechanism of the fourth assembly 310 includes a toothed wheel 322, which is similar to the worm gear 22.
  • the toothed wheel 322 rotates coaxially with one of the blinds 314.
  • the moving mechanism further comprises a line means in the form of a chain 330 which extends in a loop around upper and tower rollers 332 which are attached at upper and lower ends of the firame respectively.
  • the chain 330 is connected to side edges of each blind 314, and engages with teeth on the wheel 322 at opposite side edges thereof.
  • the moving mechanism further comprises a pair of handles 324, which are connected to opposite sides of the chain 330 by a chord 334.
  • the user can adjust the inclination of the blinds 314 by pulling on one of the chords 334. This causes the chain 330 to move relative to the wheel 322, thereby causing the wheel 322 to rotate, and change the inclination of the blinds 314.
  • Figs. 12 to 14 show a fifth lamp shade assembly 410 in accordance with the invention.
  • the fifth assembly 410 is similar to the first assembly 10.
  • a translucent coloured screen 434 is provided between the light source and the blinds 414.
  • the blinds 414 are also lined with a translucent material in a contrasting colour relative to the colour of the translucent screen.
  • the translucent screen is green, while the blinds 414 are blue. This arrangement enables the colour of the light emitted to be altered by the user by adjustment of the inclination of the blinds 414, thereby altering the amount of overlap between the screen 434 and the blinds 414.
  • the apparatus provides a simple, effective means for dimming and changing the direction of light emitted from a lamp shade, and in one embodiment, the colour of the emitted light.
  • the embodiments are suitable for both incandescent and fluorescent bulbs.
  • the lamp shade assembly is relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and simple to operate.
  • the translucent screen and blinds could be of any colour, and could be provided on any of the lamp shade assemblies in accordance with the invention, irrespective of the moving mechanism used. Further alternative moving mechanisms could be envisaged.
  • the assembly could be adapted such that a single moving mechanism could be employed to move blinds on different sides simultaneously.
  • the invention is suitable for lamp shade assemblies of substantially any size, and assemblies having different shapes and / or numbers of sides could be used.
  • the blinds could include perforations to permit more light to escape.

Abat-jour (10) dans lequel une source de lumière peut être positionnée, l'abat-jour comprenant un cadre (11) définissant une pluralité de côtés ouverts (12) s'étendant à partir d'une extrémité inférieure en utilisation jusqu'à une extrémité supérieure en utilisation, chaque côté (12) ayant une pluralité de stores allongés généralement plans (14) s'étendant sur toute l'ouverture sur le côté respectif et un mécanisme mobile (16) agencé de manière à faire pivoter deux ou plusieurs des stores (14) simultanément autour d'un axe allongé entre un état ouvert (figure 4) dans lequel le plan des stores est généralement perpendiculaire au côté respectif et un état fermé (figure 2) dans laquelle le plan des stores est généralement parallèle au côté respectif.
