Description

Camera Housing
The present invention relates to a housing for a camera, for example a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera.
A known camera housing 100 is shown in Figure 1. The housing 100 has a body 102 for housing an image acquisition device (not shown), such as a camera, and a transparent, or opaque hemispherical dome 104 connected to the body 102 through which the image acquisition device has a field of view to the outside world. The housing 100 has a mounting component 106 that also forms one removable side wall of the housing 100. The mounting component 106 is generally flat and configured to be mounted against a mounting surface 108, such as a wall, for example via fixation elements, such as screws which pass from an internal surface of the mounting component 106 through openings to its external surface. The mounting component 106 when fixed to the housing 100 seals the contents of the housing 100 in such a way that it is protected from the external environment, for example the housing 100 is made watertight.
A problem with the arrangement mentioned above is that the mounting component 106 is not connected to the main body 102 of the housing 100, although it is fixed to the mounting surface 108. When the body 102 is removed from the mounting component 106 so the contents of the housing 100 can be accessed, e.g. for servicing, the body 102 is no longer connected to the mounting component 106 and is independent of it. This makes it difficult to service the contents of the body 102, e.g. the image acquisition device and its associated electronics, mechanisms and cables. This also represents a safety hazard since the body 102 can fall away from the mounting component 106.
The present invention solves the aforementioned and other problems.
In one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a housing for housing an image acquisition device, such as, but not limited to, a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera, comprising a body in which the image acquisition device can be housed, and a mounting component which is adapted for mounting on a mounting element, such as a mounting surface, e.g. a planar surface such as a wall. The body is movable with respect to the mounting component whilst being connected to it.
In on embodiment, the mounting component is a side wall of the housing, or part of a side wall of the housing, and is configured to close, and preferably seal, an opening in the body. In one embodiment, the body is movable in a predetermined motion or fixed motion relative to the mounting component.
In one embodiment, the mounting component is configured, in a closed arrangement of the mounting component and body, to close an aperture of the body through which the contents of the body can normally be accessed when the body and mounting component are in an open arrangement. When closed, the body and mounting component may be sealed to each other so that the contents of the body is sealed from the external environment, e.g. the housing is weatherproof, or watertight.
In one embodiment, the body is connected to the mounting component via a hinged crank which is connected between the mounting component and the body, preferably inside the body and mounting component, i.e. internal to the housing, and is adapted to permit the body to rotate with respect to the mounting component whilst at the same time permit the entire body and entire mounting component to move away and towards each other. In this context movement of the entire body and/or mounting component means translational movement where all points on the body or mounting component move further away from, or closer to the other of the body or mounting component, i.e. not only rotational movement, although rotational movement may also occur in conjunction with translational movement.
In one embodiment, the hinged crank comprises a link including two changes of direction, e.g. two bends where the link is formed from a single piece of material, such as two substantially right angle bends, so that two ends of the link are parallel to each other, but displaced from each other by a joining section of the link which extends between the two changes of direction. One end of the link is pivotably connected to the body, and the other end of the link is pivotably connected to the mounting component.
In one embodiment, the mounting component has a planar surface and includes a protruding wall which extends from the planar surface to connect into the opening in the body. A seal may reside on the edge of the distal wall so as to provide a seal between the body and the mounting component when the mounting component and body are in their closed position.
The present invention is described according to a specific embodiment below in conjunction with the appendant drawings which are briefly summarised as follows:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a housing according to the prior art;
Figure 2 is a right side view of the housing of Figure 1 ; Figure 3 is a front side view of the housing of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a housing and components thereof according to the invention.
A housing 100 has a body 102 for housing an image acquisition device (not shown), such as a camera, and a transparent, or opaque hemispherical dome 104 connected to the body 102 through which the image acquisition device has a field of view to the outside world.
The housing 100 for housing an image acquisition device 101 , such as, but not limited to, a closed- circuit television (CCTV) camera, comprises a body 102 in which the image acquisition device 101 can be housed, and a mounting component 106 which is adapted for mounting on a mounting element 108, such as a mounting surface 108, e.g. a planar surface such as a wall. The body 102 is movable with respect to the mounting component 106 whilst being connected to it. The body 102 is movable in a predetermined motion or fixed motion relative to the mounting component 106.
The mounting component 106 is configured, in a closed arrangement of the mounting component 106 and body 102, to close an aperture of the body 102 through which the contents of the body 102 can normally be accessed when the body 102 and mounting component 106 are in an open arrangement. When closed, the body 102 and mounting component 106 may be sealed to each other so that the contents of the body 102 is sealed from the external environment, e.g. the housing is weather-proof, or watertight.
The body 102 is connected to the mounting component 106 via a link 210 which is connected between the mounting component 106 and the body 102, preferably inside the body 102 and mounting component 106, i.e. internal to the housing, and is adapted to permit the body 102 to rotate with respect to the mounting component 106 whilst at the same time permit the entire body 102 and entire mounting component 106 to move away and towards each other.
The link 210 comprises a hinged crank including two changes of direction 212a, 212b, e.g. two bends where the link is formed from a single piece of material, such as two substantially right angle bends, so that two ends of the link are parallel to each other, but displaced from each other by a joining section 213 of the link which extends between the two changes of direction 212a, 212b. One end of the link is pivotably connected to the body 102, and the other end of the link is pivotably connected to the mounting component 106. One or other, or both, of these connections is removable from the body 102 and/or mounting component 106 by the end since, when connected, the ends sit in a grove, channel, or hole 240a, 240b which is connected to the body 102 or mounting component 106.
The mounting component 106 has a planar surface 204 and includes a protruding wall 212 which extends from the planar surface to connect into the opening in the body 102. A seal 250 resides on the edge of the distal wall so as to provide a seal between the body 102 and the mounting component 106 when the mounting component 106 and body 102 are in their closed position and the wall 212 protrudes into the opening 260 of the body 102.
It will be understood that the present invention has been described above by way of example only, and that the invention is defined by the claims.
