Abstract

The present invention relates to a digital broadcast receiving device (1) comprising at least one receiver (2) providing the broadcast to be received and a recording unit (3) providing the broadcast to be recorded in a storage unit. By means of the present invention, it is aimed to realize a digital broadcast receiving device (1) with a low energy cost and that can be operated in compliance with the energy tariff, and the control method thereof.

Description

A DIGITAL BROADCAST RECEIVING DEVICE WHICH OPERATES IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE ENERGY TARIFF AND THE CONTROL METHOD THEREOF
The present invention relates to a digital broadcast receiving device that can be operated in compliance with the energy tariff, and the control method thereof.
The decreasing energy resources in the world, increasing population and the energy per capita necessitate the efficient usage of limited energy sources and hence making changes in the energy production and distribution systems. With this need and taking into consideration that the energy consumption is intensified at certain hours during the day, methods such as variable energy pricing at these hours and determining the tariff according to the load of the grid are used. Energy costs are tried to be decreased by designing appliances in compliance with the systems wherein the tariff varies dynamically depending on the load, intensity of the grid.
In the state of the art United States Patent Application No. US2010321587, an electronic device is explained wherein energy saving is provided by controlling the display brightness according to the power rate data.
The aim of the present invention is the realization of a digital broadcast receiving device with a low energy cost and that can be operated in compliance with the energy tariff, and the control method thereof.
In the digital broadcast receiving device realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof, the control unit controls the operation of the recording unit according to the energy tariff data.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the data about the discounted and normal energy tariff hours are entered by the user. The control unit monitors the operation of the recording unit according to the data entered by the user and saved in the memory.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the data about the discounted and normal energy tariff hours are detected dynamically through the energy grid by the tariff identifier and submitted to the control unit. Thus, the changing tariff data are assured to be up-to-date and the recording unit is assured to be operated in compliance with the tariff.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the control unit informs the user of the situation if a program is being watched when the tariff is changed from discounted to normal. In light of this data, the user is suggested that the program being watched be recorded and watched later when the discounted energy tariff is active again. In case that the user accepts this suggestion, the control unit provides the recording unit to start the recording process.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the control unit provides the recording unit to record the related program without asking for the user preference if a program is being watched when the tariff is changed from discounted to normal.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the receiver provides the electronic program guide (EPG) data to be received along with the broadcast. In this embodiment, the control unit provides the EPG data to be saved in the memory in order to be stored in the event information table (EIT), and the memory to be updated regularly in accordance with the EPG data received from the receiver.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the digital broadcast receiving device is a television and its screen is turned off in case that the recording unit is guided to the recording process by the control unit due to the change in the energy tariff. Thus, energy consumption during high energy tariff is minimized.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the digital broadcast receiving device is a set-top box without the displaying feature and is changed to stand-by mode in case that the recording unit is guided to the recording process by the control unit due to the change in the energy tariff. Thus, energy consumption during high energy tariff is minimized.
The digital broadcast receiving device realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where:
Figure 1 – is the schematic view of the digital broadcast receiving device in an embodiment of the present invention.
Figure 2 – is the schematic view of the digital broadcast receiving device in another embodiment of the present invention.

The abbreviations related to the supplementary elements used in explicating the present invention are given below:
T: Energy tariff
Td: Discounted energy tariff
Tn: Normal energy tariff
Ps: Marked program
Bf: First broadcast
Br: Re-broadcast
Tips: Energy tariff during first broadcast
Tipr: Energy tariff during re-broadcast
The digital broadcast receiving device (1) of the present invention comprises at least one receiver (2) providing the broadcast to be received, a recording unit (3) providing the broadcast to be recorded in a storage unit and a control unit (4) controlling the operation of the recording unit (3) according to the energy tariff data (T). Thus, energy consumption is provided to be reduced.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the digital broadcast receiving device (1) comprises a memory (5) wherein the energy tariff data (T) entered by the user are recorded. Thus, the user can save the tariff data of the energy provider he/she receives service from to the memory (5) and the operation of the recording unit (3) is enabled to be controlled accordingly.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the digital broadcast receiving device (1) comprises a tariff identifier (6) which detects the energy tariff data (T) to be received from the grid when the digital broadcast receiving device (1) is connected to an energy grid wherein the energy tariff changes dynamically, and which transmits the energy tariff data (T) to the control unit (4). Thus, a digital broadcast receiving device (1) that is easily adapted to changing tariff conditions is provided to be realized.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the control unit (4) notifies the user of the tariff change when the normal energy tariff (Tn) becomes active while a program is being watched through the discounted energy tariff (Td) and suggests that the program being watched be recorded by the recording unit (3) and watched later when the discounted energy tariff (Td) is active again. Thus, the user is provided to be guided to the watching preference which provides energy saving.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the control unit (4) provides the recording unit (3) to record the program being watched when the normal energy tariff (Tn) becomes active while a program is being watched through the discounted energy tariff (Td). Thus, providing energy saving is guaranteed by performing the program recording process, which causes less energy consumption than watching the program which causes higher energy consumption while the normal energy tariff is active.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the receiver (2) provides the electronic program guide (EPG) data to be received along with the broadcast. In this embodiment, the control unit (4) provides the EPG data to be saved in the memory (5) in order to be stored in the event information table (EIT), and the memory (5) to be updated regularly in accordance with the EPG data received from the receiver (2).
In an embodiment of the present invention, the digital broadcast receiving device (1) is a television comprising a screen (7) that provides the program to be watched. In this embodiment, the control unit (4) provides the recording unit (3) to record the program being watched when the normal energy tariff (Tn) becomes active while a program is being watched through the discounted energy tariff (Td) and turns off the screen (7) as well.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the digital broadcast receiving device (1) is a set-top-box without the displaying feature. In this embodiment, the control unit (4) provides the recording unit (3) to record the program being watched when the normal energy tariff (Tn) becomes active while a program is being watched through the discounted energy tariff (Td) and provides the digital broadcast receiving device (1) to be changed to stand-by mode as well.
The control method performed by the control unit (4) of the digital broadcast receiving device (1) of the present invention comprises the following steps:
  • Detecting the energy tariff data (Tips) during the first broadcast (Bf) of the marked program (Ps) when a program is marked through EIT to be recorded (101),
  • Detecting whether or not the marked program (Ps) marked on EIT has a re-broadcast (Br) if the energy tariff data (Tips) is not the discounted tariff (Td) during the first broadcast (Bf) of the marked program (Ps) (102),
  • Detecting the energy tariff data (Tipr) during the re-broadcast (Br) if a re-broadcast (Br) is present (103), and
  • Determining when to record the marked program (Ps) (104).
In an embodiment of the present invention, in the step of determining when to record the marked program (Ps) (104), the user is suggested that the re-broadcast (Br) of the marked program (Ps) is recorded instead of its first broadcast (Bf) if the energy tariff data (Tipr) during the re-broadcast (Br) time is the discounted tariff (Td).
In an embodiment of the present invention, in the step of determining when to record the marked program (Ps) (104), the recording unit (3) is provided to record the re-broadcast (Br) of the marked program (Ps) instead of its first broadcast (Bf) if the energy tariff data (Tipr) during the re-broadcast (Br) time is the discounted tariff (Td).
By means of the digital broadcast receiving device (1) of the present invention and its control method, the energy consumption is provided to be minimized without missing the programs desired to be watched.
It is to be understood that the present invention is not limited by the embodiments disclosed above and a person skilled in the art can easily introduce different embodiments. These should be considered within the scope of the protection postulated by the claims of the present invention.

Claims (11)

  1. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) comprising at least one receiver (2) that provides the broadcast to be received and a recording unit (3) that provides the broadcast to be recorded in a storage unit, characterized by a control unit (4) that controls the operation of the recording unit (3) according to the energy tariff data (T).
  2. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in Claim 1, characterized by a memory (5) wherein the energy tariff data (T) entered by the user is saved.
  3. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in Claim 1, characterized by a tariff identifier (6) which detects the energy tariff data (T) to be received from the grid when the digital broadcast receiving device (1) is connected to an energy grid wherein the energy tariff changes dynamically, and which transmits the energy tariff data (T) to the control unit (4).
  4. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in any one of the above claims, characterized by the control unit (4) which notifies the user of the tariff change when the normal energy tariff (Tn) becomes active while a program is being watched through the discounted energy tariff (Td) and suggests that the program being watched be recorded by the recording unit (3) and watched later when the discounted energy tariff (Td) is active again.
  5. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in any one of the Claims 1 to 3, characterized by the control unit (4) which provides the recording unit (3) to record the program being watched when the normal energy tariff (Tn) becomes active while a program is being watched through the discounted energy tariff (Td).
  6. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in any one of the above claims, characterized by the receiver (2) which provides the electronic program guide (EPG) data to be received along with the broadcast, and by the control unit (4) which provides the EPG data to be saved in the memory (5) in order to be stored in the event information table (EIT), and the memory (5) to be updated regularly in accordance with the EPG data received from the receiver (2).
  7. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in any one of the above claims, which is a television comprising a screen (7) that provides the program to be watched, and characterized by the control unit (4) that provides the recording unit (3) to record the program being watched when the normal energy tariff (Tn) becomes active while a program is being watched through the discounted energy tariff (Td), and that turns off the screen (7) as well.
  8. A digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in any one of the Claims 1 to 6, which is a set-top box without the displaying feature and characterized by the control unit (4) that provides the recording unit (3) to record the program being watched when the normal energy tariff (Tn) becomes active while a program is being watched through the discounted energy tariff (Td), and that provides the digital broadcast receiving device (1) to be changed to stand-by mode as well.
  9. A control method performed by the control unit (4) of a digital broadcast receiving device (1) as in any one of the above claims, comprising the following steps:
    - Detecting the energy tariff data (Tips) during the first broadcast (Bf) of the marked program (Ps) when a program is marked through EIT to be recorded (101),
    - Detecting whether or not the marked program (Ps) marked on EIT has a re-broadcast (Br) if the energy tariff data (Tips) is not the discounted tariff (Td) during the first broadcast (Bf) of the marked program (Ps) (102), and
    - Detecting the energy tariff data (Tipr) during the re-broadcast (Br) if a re-broadcast (Br) is present (103), and
    - Determining when to record the marked program (Ps) (104).
  10. A control method as in Claim 9 wherein, in the step of determining when to record the marked program (Ps) (104), the user is suggested that the re-broadcast (Br) of the marked program (Ps) be recorded instead of its first broadcast (Bf) if the energy tariff data (Tipr) during the re-broadcast (Br) time is the discounted tariff (Td).
  11. A control method as in Claim 9 wherein, in the step of determining when to record the marked program (Ps) (104), the recording unit (3) records the re-broadcast (Br) of the marked program (Ps) instead of its first broadcast (Bf) if the energy tariff data (Tipr) during the re-broadcast (Br) time is the discounted tariff (Td).
