Definitions
- This disclosure relates generally to an electronic fuel regulation system, and more particular, to an electronic fuel regulation system for small internal combustion engines having an dynamic fuel pump system and method for operating the associated system fuel pump.
- Internal combustion engines generally come in two basic varieties, two-cycle and four-cycle. The primary difference between the two is the number of compression strokes for combustion. Following the compression stroke (stroke one), a two-cycle engine completes the combustion cycle (power stroke, exhaust stroke, intake stroke) in one single, condensed stroke of the piston (stroke two). The more complex four-cycle engine, (following compression stroke one) completes the same combustion cycle strokes individually (as strokes two, three and four).
- the type and operation of the other engine components depend on whether the engine is a two-cycle or four-cycle engine.
- the operation of a fuel pump necessarily depends on what type of engine is being utilized.
- the operation of the fuel is so different between the two-cycle and four-cycle engine, that a single fuel pump cannot be used in both types of engines.
- a typical electric fuel pump is driven by a DC motor in continuous operation, sometimes referred to as operating "solid on".
- the drawback is that the fuel pump delivers a specific volume and pressure based on the DC motor characteristic.
- an adjustable or wideband fuel regulator is used to compensate for the variation.
- this method is challenging and costly to implement.
- Another option is to design and manufacture a fuel pump for a specific application, which is also costly.
- Figure 1 is a block diagram of an engine with an electronic fuel regulation system
- Figure 2 is a diagrammatic view of a prior art pulse width modulation design for driving a fuel pump
- Figure 3 is a diagrammatic view of the variable frequency and variable duty cycle pulse width modulation design of the present disclosure.
- an electronic fuel regulation system (EFR system) 1 0 for an internal combustion engine C includes, a fuel pump 1 2, a fuel valve 14, and plurality of sensors 16.
- An electronic control unit (ECU) 1 8 operatively connects to the fuel pump 12, the fuel valve 14, and the plurality of sensors 1 6 for operation of the EFR system 1 0 based upon a computer program within the ECU 18.
- the ECU 18 monitors a two dimensional control sequence that employs an improved pulse width modulation sequence to monitor engine performance for correlation to the performance of the fuel pump 12.
- the fuel pump 12 is preferably a high production low cost fuel pump, however, any suitable fuel pump can be used in the EFR system 1 0.
- the fuel valve 14 is preferably a fuel injector, however, any fuel valve 14 suitable for metering the predetermined amount of fuel to the engine can be used.
- the plurality of sensors 1 6 can include sensors for detection of various environmental characteristics or engine operating characteristics, including, but not limited to spark plugs, intake air (ambient) temperature, engine temperature, or throttle position. These components are generally interconnected by a wiring harness (not shown).
- the sensors 16 are operatively connected to the ECU 18 for a determination of the operating status of the engine C.
- the ECU 1 8 operatively connects to the fuel valve 14 for operation based upon the computer program within the ECU 1 8, which may be modified based upon the ECU'S assessment of the operating status of the engine C, provided by the various signals sent to the ECU 18 by sensors 1 6.
- the EFR system 1 0 works in cooperation with a fuel piping system that generally routes fuel from a fuel tank, through the fuel pump 1 2 and the fuel valve 14, and into the internal combustion engine C.
- the ECU 1 8 comprises an electronic circuit with a microprocessor and memory device.
- the ECU 18 is programmable with pulse width modulation (PWM) ability.
- PWM pulse width modulation
- any ECU can be used as long as it is capable of processing the inputs and generating the outputs necessary to operate the EFR system 10 as described herein.
- the computer program is stored on the memory device and is configured for control of the EFS system 10, such as, the opening and closing of the fuel valve 14 in conjunction with the firing of the spark plug on the engine C.
- the ECU 1 8 operates the fuel pump 12 through a pulse-width modulation (PWM) circuit according to specified parameters, such as frequency and duty-cycle, stored in the memory device.
- PWM pulse-width modulation
- the fuel pump 1 2 communicates fuel to the fuel valve 14 at a predetermined volume X and a predetermined pressure Y at a frequency of about 60Hz and at about a 50% duty-cycle (50% on 50% off), and deliver less volume than X and less pressure than Y.
- the frequency and the duty cycle are parameters that are selected according the specifications and capabilities of the fuel pump 14. For example, to reduce the pressure and the volume by 20% of the original pump values, a duty-cycle of about 70% to about 80% can be selected.
- This configuration allows the fuel pump 14 to operate in multiple arrangements of EFR systems without altering any other part in the system, except for programming the computer program of the ECU with appropriate PWM parameters.
- the PWM parameters correlate with the engine RPM and the air/fuel ratio (or throttle position) to the engine.
- engines operate at a specific speed (RPM) and at a specific air/fuel ratio (throttle position).
- Sensors communicate the engine RPM and the air/fuel ratio to the ECU, which can be used to determine the appropriate PWM parameters, such as frequency and duty-cycle, for operation of the fuel pump drive.
- the parameters for the fuel pump 14 should be about 33.33Hz and the duty-cycle should be about 30%.
- the fuel pump 14 communicates fuel on- demand according to the needs of the engine based on the engine RPM and air/fuel ratio.
- the PWM parameters can be determined by correlation of engine RPM with frequency and keeping the duty-cycle fixed at a selected value.
- the PWM parameters can be determined by correlation of the air/fuel ratio with the duty-cycle and keeping the frequency at a selected value.
- this method can be used to eliminate the need for a pressure regulator in the system, by instead using a pressure sensor as a feedback for adjustment of the PWM parameters to maintain the selected pressure.
