Abstract

The present invention provides a method for the conversion of a biomass to ethanol that includes increasing the moisture content of the biomass. The invention may be employed with any of a variety of biomasses, such as Arundo donax.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS received by the International Bureau on 30 April 2013 (30.04.2013)
1. A method for producing ethanol from a biomass comprising:
a) increasing the moisture content of the biomass by soaking the biomass in water for about 6 to about 36 hours;
b) pretreating the biomass with an acid-catalyzed steam explosion to produce a slurry; and
c) subjecting the slurry to i) enzymatic hydrolysis and ii) fermentation by a microorganism to produce ethanol.
2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the biomass is totally submerged in the water.
3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the period of time is about 24 hours.
4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the acid- catalyzed steam explosion utilizes an acid selected from sulfur dioxide and sulfuric acid.
5. A method for producing ethanol from a biomass comprising:
a) increasing the moisture content of the biomass by soaking the biomass in water for a period of time;
b) pretreating the biomass with an acid-catalyzed steam explosion to produce a slurry; and
c) subjecting the slurry to simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) by subjecting the slurry to i) enzymatic hydrolysis and ii) fermentation by a microorganism to produce ethanol.
6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the microorganism is S. cerevisiae.
7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the moisture content of the biomass after step (a) is 10-60%.
8. A method for producing ethanol from an Arundo donax biomass comprising:
a) increasing the moisture content of the Arundo donax biomass by soaking the Arundo donax biomass in water for a period of time;
b) pretreating the Arundo donax biomass with an acid- catalyzed steam explosion to produce a slurry; and
c) subjecting the slurry to i) enzymatic hydrolysis and ii) fermentation by a microorganism to produce ethanol.
9. A method for producing ethanol from a biomass comprising:
a) increasing the moisture content of the biomass by steaming the biomass for a period of time;
b) pretreating the biomass with an acid-catalyzed steam explosion to produce a slurry; and c) subjecting the slurry to i) enzymatic hydrolysis and ii) fermentation by a microorganism to produce ethanol.
10. The method according to claim 9, wherein the steaming occurs in a steam gun.
11. The method according to claim 9, wherein the period of time is from about 15 seconds to about 120 seconds.
12. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the period of time is about 45 seconds to about 90 seconds.
13. The method according to claim 9, wherein the acid- catalyzed steam explosion utilizes an acid selected from sulfur dioxide and sulfuric acid.
14. The method according to claim 8, wherein step c) comprises simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF).
15. The method according to claim 9, wherein the
microorganism is S. ceravisiae.
16. The method according to claim 9, wherein the moisture content of the blomass after step (a) is about 10-60%.
17. The method according to claim 9, wherein the biomass is Arundo donax.
