Description

ELECTRONIC MANUAL ACCELERATION DEVICE
The present invention relates to a manual electronic acceleration device.
More specifically, the invention relates to a device of the above kind, permitting manual acceleration without removing hands from steering wheel whichever it is the driving condition and situation.
As it is well known, different systems for manual acceleration have been suggested in the last decades in order to make it easier driving for disabled people.
Among the most widely used solutions, described in many patent applications file by the same Applicant since the sixties, it must be considered the use of a little wheel concentric with respect to the steering wheel, and provided above or under the same.
Said solution, surely valid and almost unique in the last years, can be surely be improved under the acceleration homogeneity and sensitiveness pint of view.
In this situation it must be considered the solution suggested according to the present invention permitting obtaining a more homogeneous and sensible adjustment of acceleration thanks to the provision of an acceleration system provided in such a way not to interfere with the steering wheel, and wherein the rotative acceleration system can be actuated by a rotation action by the user without detaching the hands from the steering wheel.
Furthermore, by the solution according to the present invention, said acceleration action can be indifferently carried out by the right hand or by the left hand or by both.
Another object of the present invention is that of suggesting a solution that can be indifferently provided above or under the steering wheel.
These and other results are obtained according to the present invention by a device of the above kind wherein acceleration is obtained by a circular rotative element, preferably provided and fixed under the steering wheel, and following its steering movement, permitting acceleration on the basis of the vehicle direction, without losing gripping action and direction on the steering wheel, and making it possible maintaining when necessary both hands on the steering wheel. The solution according to the invention is particularly, but not exclusively advantageous when driving along mixed mountain roads.
It is therefore specific object of the present invention an electronic manual acceleration device for a vehicle provided with a steering wheel, said device providing at least a first element, or covering element, or little wheel, having a circular sector shape, at least a second element, sliding coupled with said first element or little wheel, and integral with said steering wheel, acceleration being obtained by rotating, rightward or leftward, said first element, following the steering movement of the steering wheel, thus permitting acceleration on the basis of vehicle direction, without losing grip on the steering wheel and direction, being it possible, when necessary, keeping both hands on the same steering wheel.
In a first embodiment of the device according to the invention, two circular sector first elements and two corresponding second elements are provided.
In a second embodiment of the device according to the invention, said first element or little wheel and said second element are comprised of a full circle.
Preferably, according to the invention, said device is applied behind said steering wheel.
Furthermore, according to the invention, said device can be provided in front of said steering wheel.
Particularly, according to the invention, rotation coupling between said first element and said second element is obtained by projections realized on said second element and a sliding channel realized on said first element.
Further, according to the invention, said second element is fixed to the steering wheel by clamps or other systems.
In a further embodiment of the device according to the invention, a layer, made up of Teflon®, or of another material having similar sliding properties, can be provided between said first element and said second element, and a further sheet element, between said layer and said first element.
Preferably, according to the invention, sliding between said further sheet element and said layer is obtained by sliding slots and radial bearings. Particularly, transmission of motion and transformation of the same into acceleration is obtained by a potentiometer.
According to the invention, a tracer point is provided on said first element or steering wheel, said tracer point, sliding on potentiometer, permitting recognizing position between second circular element, integral with the steering wheel, and the first element or little wheel.
Furthermore, according to the invention, idle pins are housed in suitable holes on said second circular element, said pins having one end coupled to a groove obtained within the first element or little wheel, so as to obtain a circular relevant movement between said second element and the little wheel.
Still according to the invention, return of said first element or little wheel to the quiet or "not acceleration" position occurs by elastic means or springs, one for clockwise rotations and the other one for anticlockwise rotations, not shown.
The present invention will be now described for illustrative, but not limitative purposes, according to its preferred embodiments shown in the figures of the enclosed drawings wherein:
figure 1 shows an exploded view of a first embodiment of the manual acceleration device according to the invention;
figure 2 shows an exploded view of a second embodiment of the manual acceleration device according to the invention; and
figure 3 shows an exploded view of a third embodiment of the manual acceleration device according to the invention.
In the following, the solution suggested according to the present invention will be described according to an arrangement above the steering wheel, but as already said the manual acceleration device according to the invention can be indifferently provided above or under the steering wheel.
Observing first figure 1 , it is shown a first embodiment of a manual acceleration device according to the invention, mounted behind the steering wheel (not shown in this as well in the others figures), providing a first circular element 1 , or covering element, or little wheel, sliding coupled with a second circular element 2.
Said second circular element 2, preferably comprised of sheet, is integral with steering wheel. Rotating coupling between element 1 and element 2 is obtained by projections realized on circular element 2 and a sliding channel realized on little wheel 1.
Device 1 according to the invention provides acceleration by rotating little wheel 1 about its own symmetry axis and with respect to steering wheel.
Starting from a quiet position, to accelerate, little wheel 1 is rotated with respect to steering wheel, either in a clockwise direction or in an anticlockwise direction, against the force of a spring (not shown in figure 1).
Acceleration is proportional to rotation amount, so that maximum acceleration is obtained when rotation reaches a limit angle set by designer of the device (e.g. 5°).
In case acceleration has been obtained by rotating little wheel 1 according to a direction, its reverse rotation reduces acceleration up to reaching a zero value in correspondence of quiet position.
In case little wheel is left by the user, it goes back to the quiet position by the action of return spring, or of other suitable means, not shown.
Second circular element 2 is fixed to the steering wheel by clamps, or by another system, also not shown in the figures.
Observing now figure 2, it is shown another embodiment of the manual acceleration device according to the invention, wherein a layer 3, made up of Teflon®, or of another material having similar sliding properties, is provided between said little wheel 1 and said second circular element 2, and a further sheet element 4, between said layer 3 and said little wheel 1.
Sliding between said further sheet element 4 and said layer 3 is obtained by sliding slots and radial bearings.
Transmission of motion, and transformation of the same into acceleration, is obtained by a potentiometer 5.
Idle pins 6 are housed in suitable holes on said second circular element 2, said pins 6 having one end coupled to a groove obtained within the little wheel 1 , so as to obtain a circular relevant movement between said second circular elements and the little wheel 1.
A tracer point, not shown, is provided on said steering wheel 1 , said tracer point, sliding on potentiometer 5, permitting recognizing position between second circular element 2, integral with the steering wheel, and the little wheel 1.
Said information is sent to a suitable electronic unit (not shown), processing the signal and transmitting the acceleration control to the vehicle electronics.
Return of little wheel 1 in the quiet position, or "not acceleration position" occurs by the action of two return springs, not shown, one for clockwise rotations and the other one for anticlockwise rotations, respectively.
Position of the little wheel can be monitored by any instrument suitable for said function (e.g. electric systems, magnetic systems, video systems, mechanical systems, mixed systems, etc.).
In the third embodiment shown in figure 3, manual acceleration device according to the invention provides, instead of the little wheel 1 and the second circular element 2, two circle sectors 1', 11", and two sectors of said second circular element 12', 12".
The present invention has been described for illustrative, but not limitative purposes, according to its preferred embodiments, but it is understood that variations and/or modifications can be introduced by those skilled in the art without departing from the relevant scope, as defined in the enclosed claims.
