Abstract

A binocular iris identification camera includes a single electronic imager and a lens unit for capturing images of one or both irises of a subject. A horizontally elongated viewfinder orifice passes through the camera housing and allows the operator to see both irises of the subject as an indication of correct aim. An electronic range detector signals when the camera is in range and may include a series of icons to indicate required distance adjustment. An ergonomically correct handle allows easy operator positioning of the camera, or the camera can be placed in a stand designed to receive the handle and angle the camera to facilitate desktop use with self-positioning by the subject. In operator mode, the camera is positioned between the operator and the subject, and the operator aims the camera by looking through the elongated viewfinder orifice to simultaneously see two irises of the subject.
