Description

END CAP FOR CONNECTING TOGETHER PEELED CABLES
DESCRIPTION The object of the present invention is an electrical device for the multiple connection of discontinuous conductors, extending according to the same longitudinal direction,
In the rest of this description the terms "conductors", "wires" and "cables" will be used as synonyms. It is known, in the technical field of electrical power system apparatuses, that there is a need to make electrical connections of discontinuous wires through terminals suitable for restoring the continuity of the electrical connection and at the same time ensuring the mechanical hold of the conductors that must withstand predetermined longitudinal traction loads. An example of such terminals is represented by so-called "mammuths" substantially consisting of a body made from insulating material in which terminals made from conductive material are embedded, connected together and comprising an insertion hole of the cable according to its longitudinal direction and a clamping screw of the cable itself acting in a direction transversal to the cable, The most common terminal boards for fuse boxes and the like are also made on the same operating principle. In particular the cap terminals make it possible to simultaneously clamp a series of conductors of different diameters and thanks to the pressure of the fastening screw on them, to permanently ensure the conductivity of the assembly.
WO 2009/007475 Al describes a device for the electrical connection of conductors according to the preamble of claim 1, comprising a body made from insulating material with a closed end and the opposite end open forming a housing for said conductors, also made from insulating material.
Although functional, such connection means do however has some drawbacks substantially represented by the fact that the clamping is not homogeneous and acts only on the conductive part without insulation and therefore potentially highlights some defects: it is necessaiy to previously peel the wires to size and twist them tightly before inserting them in the guide for the clamping of the screw; it is necessaiy to use three hands or high skill in joining wires since they tend to come loose; it is necessaiy to use a tool (screwdriver) to screw in/unscrew the terminal, making the operations not always easy overall, particularly at awkward positions like at light fittings or in the ceiling channels or in the cable boxes close to the ground.
There is therefore the technical problem of providing a device suitable for making the connection of discontinuous electric cables, which is suitable for restoring electrical continuity, for ensuring a reliable mechanical hold of the conductors against longitudinal traction forces, that does not have live elements in a position that can be easily accessed even accidentally by a user.
In such a problem it is also necessaiy for such a device to be small in size, easy and cost- effective to produce, easy to use even for untrained people without the need for auxiliary tools.
A further purpose of the invention is to allow the connection of electrical conductors with flexible wires, rigid wires, or both types, with the possibility of adaptation to bundles of conductors having different diameters.
Such results are obtained according to the present invention by an electrical device for the multiple connection of discontinuous conductors, extending in a longitudinal direction, having the characteristics of the attached independent claim 1. Advantageous embodiments can be seen in the dependent claims.
The device for the electrical connection of discontinuous conductors according to the invention comprises a body made from insulating material with a closed end and the opposite end open forming a housing for said conductors and a clamping member of the conductors also made from insulating material, in which the clamping member comprises at least one pair of clamping bands bent into a U shape inside said housing of the body integral with a locking lever that is housed in a seat external to the body, one of said bands clamping the peeled portions of the conductors, and the other of said bands clamping the sheathed portions. Greater details can be found from the following description of non-limiting example embodiments of the object of the present invention made with reference to the attached drawings, which show:
in figure 1 : an exploded view of the device according to a first embodiment of the present invention;
in figure 2 : a perspective view of the device of figure 1 assembled and open;
in figure 3 : a perspective view, taken from the opposite side with respect to that of figure 2, with the device in closed position, before final tensioning;
in figure 4 : a partially sectioned schematic perspective view of the device according to the plane IV-IV of figure 2;
in figure 5 : a partially sectioned schematic perspective view of the device according to the plane V-V of figure 2;
in figure 6 : a schematic perspective view of a device according to a second embodiment of the finding, for the connection of multiple discontinuous conductors; in figure 7 : a schematic perspective view of the device of figure 7, according to a different angle.
With reference to figures 1 to 5, the connection device of electrical conductors according to the first embodiment of the present invention, which hereafter will also be called terminal, comprises a body made from insulating material 10 formed from two halves 10A and 10B, respectively constituting a base and a cover, able to be coupled together according to a transversal direction Y-Y, perpendicular to a longitudinal direction X-X parallel to the longitudinal direction of the wires 30 to be inserted in the device. In greater detail, the two halves 10A and 10B are hinged along a longitudinal side 11 and couple together along the opposite side 12 through elastic teeth 13 provided on the cover, which engage in respective seats 14 provided in the base 10B or vice-versa. The two halves can consist of two separate pieces that are hinged along said side 1 1 of the body 10, or advantageously they can be formed in a single piece with the body, obtaining the hinge through weakening of the material. The body 10, in closed condition, has one closed end 15 and the opposite end open 16 (Fig. 3), for the insertion of the electric cables 30, which ends 31 are peeled and the remaining parts 32 are provided with a sheath.
Inside the body 10, in particular in the base half 10A there is a concave housing 20, in this case with a substantially V-shaped profile, extending in the longitudinal direction X. In particular, the housing 20 consists of a first larger housing 21 extending from the open end 16 up to about the middle of the body 10, suitable for receiving the sheathed portions 32 of the bundle of conductors 30, and a second housing 22 that is narrower and less deep that the first one, ending at the closed end 15, suitable for receiving the peeled ends 31 of the bundle of conductors 30. The housings 21, 22 advantageously have knurling to improve the retention of the wires 30.
The body 10, in particular the base half 10A, also houses a clamping member of the wires 30 globally indicated with reference numeral 40. In the illustrated example embodiment, said clamping member 40 has two clamping bands 41 bent in a U shape rising from a crosspiece 42 that is co-moulded together with a lever 43, the function of which will be better described hereafter.
In work conditions, the lever 43 is suitable for being housed in a seat 50 provided on the bottom of the base half 10A (see in particular Fig, 1), whereas the clamping bands 41 are suitable for inserting in suitable through slots of the base. In particular, there are two opposite pairs of slots 51, 52 close to the two longitudinal walls of the base half 10A, oriented according to a direction Z-Z perpendicular to the plane defined by the longitudinal direction X-X and transversal direction Y-Y.
The free end of the bands 41 advantageously has a rounded tip 44 that is suitable for promoting slotting into the slots of the body, firstly into the inlet slots 51 and then into the outlet slots 52, crossing the entire circular seat formed by the coupling of the two halves, to take up the U shape shown in Fig. 1.
At least the end portions of the bands 41 have an inner toothing 45 suitable for engaging with a corresponding toothing 53 provided in said outlet slots 52 to be blocked in the toothed slots that do not allow it to slip out. In a preferred embodiment the toothing of the bands 41 consists of a sawtooth rack, the orientation of which is such as to allow sliding towards the outside of the body and to prevent its movement in the opposite direction.
With reference to figures 1 to 5 the working of the device according to the invention is as follows:
- in normal conditions the device has the clamping bands 41 raised and the locking lever 43 open, projecting from the bottom of the body 10 (fig.3); in such a condition it is possible to easily insert the conductors 30, partially removed of the sheath, in the longitudinal housing 20 of the body 10;
- once the conductors have been inserted in the housing 20, the manual pre-tensioning of the clamping bands 41 is carried out with a force sufficient for the temporary and differentiated blocking in the area of the peeled wires 31 without the sheath and in the area of the wires still with the sheath 32. This manoeuvre makes it possible to take the two ideal diameters formed by the two different sections of the bundle of conductors 30 to the same tensioning degree;
- then the lever 43 integral with the clamping bands 41 is made to close, acting by pivoting on the body 10 and applying a rotation on the crosspiece 42 that joins together the two clamping bands, ensuring that this rotation transforms into a reduction in the diameter of the bands themselves with the consequent increase in force in the contact points of the bands with the conductors.
It can therefore be seen how the device according to the present invention makes it possible to restore and consolidate the electrical continuity for the connection of conductive wires, without the need for auxiliary tools, without the risk of a poorly clamped conductor coming loose and without there being parts subject to electrical voltage that are accessible from the outside.
Although it has been described in relation to a single form for the connection of many wires, it is provided for the terminal according to the present invention to be able to be made:
- in many sizes according to the clamping requirements so as to house a range of conductors 30 in proportion to the body 10 that houses them and to the clamping force coherent with the energy necessary to keep the conductors blocked;
- in multiple form, as a terminal board to be applied to switch boxes and/or panelboards and/or similar, allowing the insertion of the wires and the electrical connection with great speed and ease even by untrained users. Figures 6 and 7 show a second embodiment of the device according to the invention, for the connection of discontinuous conductors or wires.
In such an embodiment, elements identical or corresponding to those of the embodiment of figures 1-5 are identified with the same reference numerals, and they will not be described any further. The parts that are structurally different from the previous embodiment will only be briefly illustrated. In this case, the body 10 of the device is made in a single closed piece, instead of in two halves that can be coupled together.
The clamping member 40 remains substantially unchanged and has the lever 43 housed in the seat 50 on the bottom of the body 10 and the clamping bands 41 that penetrate into the respective slots 51, 52, remaining in operative position when the toothings 45 engage the toothings 53 of the slots 52.
In this way, each conductive element 30 pressed against the others establishes an electrical continuity made permanent by the pressure that the lever 43 applies, through the clamping bands 41, on the conductors themselves, simultaneously also blocking the part that is still sheathed.
In this embodiment, the racks ensure secure blocking of the conductors and, if they are cut at the base, they allow the terminal to be made disassemblable, if desired. Of course, the invention is not limited to the particular embodiment previously described and illustrated in the attached drawings, but numerous modifications of details within the capabilities of the man skilled in the art can be brought to it, without for this reason departing from the scope of the invention itself defined by the attached claims.
