Description

NECK FINISH, SYSTEM COMPRISING SUCH NECK FINISH AND PACKAGING PROCESS
5
The present invention refers to a neck finish, to a system comprising such neck finish and to a process for packaging vessels through such system.
As known, the terminal part of a vessel equipped
10 with means for applying a closure, such as a plug or a cover, is generally called "neck finish".
Generally, therefore, a vessel, such as for example a bottle, is composed of a containing body, inside which the product to be stored and delivered is contained, that
15 ends without interruptions with the portion of neck finish to which the plug or the cover is applied, and on which a warranty seal, such as a "tamper evidence", can also be found, such neck finish thereby being an integral part of the vessel itself.
20 In spite of the fact that regulatory bodies such as the Glass Packaging Institute (GPI) or the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) are responsible for establishing uniform standards for neck finishes of vessels made of plastics and glass, the art proposes a great variety of.
25 such neck finishes, each one of which, in many cases, can be associated with only one type of corresponding plug or cover .
Such situation however has relevant and complex technical and economic problems, above all from the point of view of manufacturers and/or packagers of products to be bottled inside such vessels.
In fact, currently, such manufacturers and/or packagers must take care both of filling the vessel with the product to be stored, and, afterwards, of applying the cover or plug on the related neck finish. This compels such manufacturers and/or packagers:
to provide themselves with costly bottling lines equipped with devices for applying plugs and covers; due to the cost of such lines, the replacement of vessels with different vessels, above all if equipped with different typs ' of neck finishes, becomes an extremely costly activity; in fact, current lines do not allow applying all types of closures and/or neck finishes being marketed and, though, limited to few types of neck finishes, closures and types of lines, it is possible to replace important machines or parts thereof, due to the major payment of money and the low margins of very many products (water, beverages, etc.), such operations are economically justifiable with difficulty.
Moreover, the bottling processes with current neck finishes integral with the vessel also suffers from hygienic problems: in fact, not rarely, the appearance of mildew can occur on the neck finish, due to beer foam, beverage residuals, etc. that come out, before or during the closure application. Moreover, when blowing the plastic bottles and before applying the closure, the neck finish is often subjected to overheating that generates distortions, scoring and/or other imperfections that generate severe problems for the contents and/or when applying the closure.
Moreover, currently, the neck finish must obviously be made of the same material of the containing body.
Therefore, object of the present invention is solving the above prior art problems by providing a neck finish that is distinct and separated from the containing body, thereby allowing to connect such neck finish, already equipped with plug or cover, to the containing body after having filled this latter one.
Another object of the present invention is providing a system that allows using on a same containing body different arrangements of closure/finish depending on the contents and without the need of replacing the bottling lines. Another object of the present invention is providing a system that allows making a vessel in which the neck finish is made of a different material from the containing body.
Moreover, an object of the present invention is providing a process for packaging vessels that allows replacing the type of neck finish/closure on every filling line, in a practical and inexpensive way.
Moreover, an object of the present invention is providing a process for packaging vessels that does not generate overheating on the neck finish.
The above and other objects and advantages of the invention, as will appear from the following description, are obtained with a neck finish as claimed in claim 1.
Moreover, the above and other objects and advantages of the invention are obtained with a system as claimed in claim 7.
Moreover, the above and other objects and advantages of ' the invention are obtained with a process for packaging vessels as claimed in claim 11.
Preferred embodiments and non-trivial variations of the present invention are the subject matter of the dependent claims.
It will be immediately obvious that numerous variations and modifications (for example related to shape, sizes, arrangements and parts with equivalent functionality) can be made to what is described, without departing from the scope of the invention as appears from the enclosed claims.
The present invention will be better described by some preferred embodiments thereof, provided as a non- limiting example, with reference to the enclosed drawings, in which:
- Figure 1 shows a side view of a preferred embodiment of the neck finish according to the present invention; and
- Figures 2a to 2f show side views of alternative preferred embodiments of the neck finish according to the present invention.
With particular reference to Figure 1, it is possible to note that the neck finish 1 according to the present invention is composed of at least one body 3 internally defining at least one passing duct 4 and having at least one surface portion thereof equipped with connecting means 5 of at least one plug or cover 7, such body 3 being further equipped with at least one terminal connecting edge 9 adapted to be connected to at least one corresponding connecting edge 11 of at least one vessel 10.
Obviously, the connecting means 5 of the plug or cover 7 can be made in several ways, such as all those known per se in the art. For example, with particular reference to Figures 2a to 2f, it is possible to note the following various types of connecting means 5 with their related plugs/covers 7:
connecting means 5 comprising three threads 6 arranged on the external surface of the body 3 for screwing a plug 7 with capsule in Sport version (Figure 2a) ;
- connecting means 5 comprising three threads 6, type 28, arranged on the external surface of the body 3 for the application under pressure of a plug 7 (Figure 2b) ; connecting means 5 comprising at least one groove 8 arranged on the perimeter on the external surface of the body 3 for the application under pressure of a plug 7 (Figure 2c), in particular for oil vessels;
connecting means 5 comprising a single thread 2 of the Short PCO type arranged on the external surface of the body 3 for screwing a plug 7 with capsule in Flat version (Figure 2d) , in particular for vessels for beverages with gas;
connecting means 5 comprising three threads 6, type 28, arranged on the external surface of the body 3 for screwing a plug 7 with capsule in Flat version (Figure 2e) , in particular for vessels for beverages without gas; connecting means 5 comprising a single thread 2 of the BPF or PCO type arranged on the external surface of the body 3 for screwing a plug 7 with a capsule in Flat version (Figure 2f) , in particular for vessels for beverages with or without gas.
Always with reference to Figure 1, it is possible to note that the system according to the present invention comprises at least one neck finish 1 as previously described and at least one vessel 10 composed of at least one containing body 13, inside which a product to be stored and delivered is contained, such containing body 13 being equipped with at least one connecting edge 11 adapted to be connected to the respective terminal connecting edge 9 of the body 3 of the neck finish 1.
Obviously, the neck finish 1 according to the present invention can be connected to the vessel 10 by joining the terminal connecting edge 9 of the body 3 to the connecting edge 11 of the containing body 13 through any technique per se known in the art. Preferably, the terminal connecting edge 9 can be connected to the connecting edge 11 through any mechanical/physical method, such as for example welding or heat-welding, that does not provide for the use of any type of gluing substances.
Obviously, both the neck finish 1 and the vessel 10 can be made of any material suitable for this purpose; for example, both the neck finish 1 and the vessel 10 could be made of the same material, such as for example a plastic or glass material. Alternatively, advantageously, the neck finish 1 and the vessel 10 can be made of mutually different materials, improving the possible guarantees of application and/or performance of existing vessels .
The present invention further refers to a process for packaging, using the previously-described system. In particular, the process according to the present invention comprises the steps of:
a) providing at least one neck finish 1 composed of at least one body 3 internally defining at least one passing duct 4 and having at least one surface portion thereof equipped with connecting means 5 of at least one plug or a cover 7, such body 3 being further equipped with at least one terminal connecting edge 9 and such connecting means 5 being used by such plug or cover 7;
b) providing at least one vessel 10 composed of at least one containing body 13, such containing body 13 being equipped with at least one connecting edge 11;
c) filling the containing body 13 of the vessel 10 with the product to be stored and delivered ; and
d) joining the terminal connecting edge 9 of the body 3 to the connecting edge 11 of the containing body 13: preferably, such steps provides for welding or heat- welding the terminal connecting edge 9 of the body 3 to the connecting edge 11 of the containing body 13.
The neck finish 1, the system and the process according to the present invention, by providing the physical separation between neck finish 1 and vessel 10 and their union only at the end of filling the containing body 13 (among the other, with the neck finish 1 already equipped with its related plug or cover 7), allow obtaining, separately or jointly, the following numerous technical advantages:
the packaging process does not require any more the use of lines equipped with screwing devices or devices for applying under pressure plugs and covers: it is thereby possible to use, in a cheap way, different arrangements of neck finish 1 according to the present invention, for example depending on the type of product (with gas, without gas, beverages, beer, milk, etc.) contained inside the vessel 10 and/or on different filling lines;
it is possible to reduce the used raw material, very importantly under environmental and economic points of view;
- it is possible to package with aseptic and/or hot- filling processes to solve the current problem of mildews present on the neck finish;
when packaging, the neck finish 1 is not subjected to overheating due to screwing the plug/cover.
