일 실시예에 따른 LED 드라이버는 전원부로부터 입력되는 전압과 전류가 서로 유사한 파형을 갖게 하므로, 고역률(high power factor)를 달성할 수 있다. 또한, LED 드라이버는 낭비되는 전력을 줄일 수 있어서 고효율(high efficiency)를 달성할 수 있다.

도 2는 개시된 기술의 일 실시예에 따른 LED 드라이버를 나타내는 회로도이다. 도 2를 참조하면, LED 드라이버(200)는 전원부(210), 스위치(220), 제 1 LED 모듈(230), 제 1 전류원(240), 제 2 LED 모듈(250), 제 2 전류원(260) 및 제어 모듈(270)을 포함한다.
전원부(210)는 정류된 AC 전원을 LED 모듈들(230, 250)로 공급하며, AC 전압원(212) 및 브릿지 정류기(214)(bridge rectifier)를 포함한다. AC 전압원(212)은 AC 전압을 생성한다. 예를 들어, AC 전압원(212)은 110V나 220V의 AC 전압을 생성할 수 있다. 브릿지 정류기(214)는 복수의 다이오드들을 포함하며, AC 전압을 전파 정류하여 입력 전압(Vin)을 생성한다.
스위치(220)는 전원부(210)로부터 입력 전압(Vin)을 수신하고, 제어 모듈(270)로부터 수신된 제어 신호에 기초하여 입력 전압(Vin)을 제 1 LED 모듈(230)로 제공하거나 제공하지 않는다. 스위치(220)는 파워(Power) MOSFET으로 구현될 수 있다. 파워 MOSFET의 드레인은 전원부(210)의 브릿지 정류기(214)와 연결되어, 브릿지 정류기(214)로부터 드레인 전류를 수신한다. 파워 MOSFET의 게이트는 제어 모듈(270)의 저항(278)과 연결되어, 저항(278)으로부터 제어 신호인 게이트 전압을 수신한다. 파워 MOSFET의 소스는 제 1 LED 모듈(230)과 연결되어, 소스 전류를 제 1 LED 모듈(230)로 제공한다. 파워 MOSFET은 게이트 소스간 전압이 문턱 전압 이상이면, 턴온되어 입력 전압(Vin)을 제 1 LED 모듈(230)로 제공한다. 파워 MOSFET은 게이트 소스간 전압이 문턱 전압 미만이면, 턴오프되어 입력 전압(Vin)을 제 1 LED 모듈(230)로 제공하지 않는다.
제 1 LED 모듈(230)은 서로 직렬 연결된 1개 이상의 LED들을 포함하며, 스위치(220)를 통하여 전원부(210)의 브릿지 정류기(214)와 연결된다. 제 1 LED 모듈(230)은 스위치(220)가 온(ON)되고, 입력 전압(Vin)이 스위치(220), 제 1 LED 모듈(230) 및 제 1 전류원(240)을 구동하는데 필요한 임계 전압 이상이면, 구동된다.
제 1 LED 모듈(230)은 스위치(220)가 오프(OFF)되면, 구동되지 않는다. 또한, 제 1 LED 모듈(230)은 스위치(220)가 온되고 입력 전압(Vin)이 스위치(220), 제 1 LED 모듈(230) 및 제 1 전류원(240)을 구동하는데 필요한 임계 전압보다 낮으면, 구동되지 않는다.
제 1 전류원(240)은 제 1 LED 모듈(230)과 연결되며, 제 1 LED 모듈(230)로 정전류 I1을 제공한다. 예를 들어, 제 1 전류원(240)은 커런트 미러형 전류원일 수 있다. 다른 예를 들어, 제 1 전류원(240)은 저항이거나, 생략될 수 있다.

트랜지스터(272)를 구동하는데 필요한 임계 전압보다 낮으면 구동되지 않는다. 제 2 LED 모듈(250)에 포함된 LED들의 문턱 전압(threshold voltage)의 합은, 제 1 LED 모듈(230)에 포함된 LED들의 문턱 전압의 합보다 크다.
제 2 전류원(260)은 제 2 LED 모듈(250) 및 제어 모듈(270)의 제 1 트랜지스터(272)와 연결되며, 제 2 LED 모듈(260)로 정전류 I2를 제공한다. 예를 들어, 제 2 전류원(260)은 커런트 미러형 전류원일 수 있다. 다른 예를 들어, 제 2 전류원(260)은 저항이거나 생략될 수 있다. 제 2 전류원(260)이 제공하는 정전류 I2는 제 1 전류원(240)이 제공하는 정전류 I1보다 크다.
제어 모듈(270)은 제 2 LED 모듈(260)이 구동되는지를 감지하고, 제 2 LED 모듈(260)이 구동되는지 여부에 기초하여 스위치(220)를 온오프 제어한다. 제어 모듈(270)은 제 2 LED 모듈(260)이 구동되면 스위치(220)를 턴오프하여 제 1 LED 모듈(230)이 구동되지 않도록 제어한다. 제어 모듈(270)은 제 2 LED 모듈(260)이 구동되지 않으면 스위치(220)를 턴온하여 제 1 LED 모듈(230)이 구동될 수 있도록 제어한다. 제어 모듈(270)은 제 1 트랜지스터(272)와 제 2 트랜지스터(274)를 포함하는 커런트 미러(276) 및 저항(278)을 포함한다.
제 1 트랜지스터(272)의 드레인은 게이트, 제 2 전류원(260) 및 제 2 트랜지스터(274)의 게이트와 연결된다. 제 2 트랜지스터(274)의 드레인은 스위치(220)의 제어단 및 저항(278)과 연결된다. 제 2 트랜지스터(274)의 드레인 전류는 제 1 트랜지스터(272)의 드레인 전류에 대응하므로, 제 2 LED 모듈(250)이 구동되는 경우 제 2 트랜지스터(274)에는 전류가 흐르고, 제 2 LED 모듈(250)이 구동되지 않는 경우 제 2 트랜지스터(274)에는 전류가 흐르지 않는다. 여기에서, 제 2 트랜지스터(274)의 드레인 전류에 대한 제 1 트랜지스터(272)의 드레인 전류의 비는, 각 트랜지스터(274, 272)의 채널 길이에 대한 채널 폭의 비에 기초하여 결정될 수 있다.

제 2 LED 모듈(250)이 구동되지 않는 경우 저항(278)에는 전류가 흐르지 않으므로, 스위치(220) 제어단 전압은 상승하여 스위치(220)가 턴온된다. 따라서 제 1 LED 모듈(230)은 구동될 수 있다.
도 3은 도 2의 LED 드라이버에서 입력 전압과 입력 전류를 설명하기 위한 도면이다. 여기에서, 입력 전압(310) 및 입력 전류(320)는 각각 브릿지 정류기(214)로부터 출력되는 전압과 전류에 해당한다.

제 3 구간(C)에서 입력 전압(310)은 제 2 전압(V2)보다 높으므로, 제 2 LED 모듈(250)은 구동된다. 그리고 제 2 LED 모듈(250)이 구동되면, 저항(278)에 정전류가 흐르게 되어 전압 강하가 생기고 스위치(220)의 제어단 전압이 감소하여 스위치(220)가 턴오프된다. 따라서 제 1 LED 모듈(230)은 구동되지 않는다. 제 3 구간(C)에서는 제 2 모듈(250)만 구동되므로, 입력 전류(320)는 제 2 전류원(260)에 의한 전류 I2에 해당한다.

저항(468)의 일단은 전원부(410)의 브릿지 정류기(412)과 연결되어 입력 전압(Vin)을 수신하고, 타단은 제 4 트랜지스터(467)의 드레인 및 제 2 스위치(445) 및 제 3 스위치(450)의 제어단과 연결되어 제 4 트랜지스터(467)로부터 제공되는 전류에 따라 입력 전압(Vin)을 전압 강하하여 제 2 및 제 3 스위치(445, 450)의 제어단으로 출력한다. 제 3 LED 모듈(455)이 구동되는 경우 저항(468)에는 정전류가 흐르므로, 제 2 스위치(445) 및 제 3 스위치(450) 제어단 전압은 하강하여 제 2 스위치(445) 및 제 3 스위치(450)가 턴오프된다. 따라서 제 1 LED 모듈(420) 및 제 2 LED 모듈(430)은 구동되지 않는다. 제 3 LED 모듈(455)이 구동되지 않는 경우 저항(468)에는 전류가 흐르지 않으므로, 제 2 스위치(445) 및 제 3 스위치(450) 제어단 전압은 상승하여 제 2 스위치(445) 및 제 3 스위치(450)가 턴온된다. 따라서, 이 경우 입력 전압에 따라 제1 LED 모듈(420) 또는 제 2 LED 모듈(430)이 구동될 수 있다. 구체적으로, 제 3 LED 모듈(455)이 구동되지 않는 상태에서 제 2 LED 모듈(430)이 구동되는 경우, 저항(443)에는 전류가 흐르므로 제 1 스위치(415)의 제어단 전압은 하강하여 제 1 스위치(415)가 턴오프되고, 결과적으로 제 1 LED 모듈(420)은 구동되지 않는다. 또한, 제 3 LED 모듈(455)과 제 2 LED 모듈(430)이 모두 구동되지 않는 경우, 저항(443)에는 전류가 흐르지 않으므로 제 1 스위치(415)의 제어단 전압은 상승하여 제 1 스위치(415)가 턴온된고, 결과적으로 제 1 LED 모듈(420)은 구동될 수 있다.
도 5는 도 4의 LED 드라이버에서 입력 전압과 입력 전류를 설명하기 위한 도면이다. 여기에서, 입력 전압(510) 및 입력 전류(520)는 각각 브릿지 정류기(412)로부터 출력되는 전압과 전류에 해당한다.
도 5를 참조하면, 제 1 구간(A) 및 제 7 구간(G)에서 입력 전압(510)은 제 3 스위치(450), 제 1 스위치(415), 제 1 LED 모듈(420) 및 제 1 전류원(425)을 구동하는데 필요한 임계 전압(V1')보다 낮으므로, 제 1, 제 2 및 제 3 LED 모듈(420, 430, 455)은 구동되지 않는다. 따라서 제 1 구간(A) 및 제 7 구간(G)에서, 입력 전류(520)는 0에 해당한다.
제 2 구간(B) 및 제 6 구간(F)에서 입력 전압(510)은 제 3 스위치(450), 제 1 스위치(415), 제 1 LED 모듈(420) 및 제 1 전류원(425)을 구동하는데 필요한 임계 전압(V1')보다 높고, 제 1 스위치(455), 제 2 LED 모듈(430), 제 2 전류원(435), 제 1 트랜지스터(441)를 구동하는데 필요한 임계 전압(V2')보다 낮으므로, 제 1 LED 모듈(420)만 구동된다. 따라서 제 2 구간(B) 및 제 6 구간(F)에서 입력 전류(520)는 I1에 해당한다.
제 3 구간(C) 및 제 5 구간(E)에서 입력 전류(510)은 제 1 스위치(455), 제 2 LED 모듈(430), 제 2 전류원(435), 제 1 트랜지스터(441)를 구동하는데 필요한 임계 전압(V2')보다 높고, 제 3 LED 모듈(455), 제 3 전류원(460) 및 제 3 트랜지스터(466)를 구동하는데 필요한 임계 전압(V3')보다 낮으므로, 제 2 LED 모듈(430)만 구동된다. 따라서 제 3 구간(C) 및 제 5 구간(E)에서 입력 전류(520)는 I2에 해당한다.
제 4 구간(D)에서 입력 전압(510)은 제 3 LED 모듈(455), 제 3 전류원(460) 및 제 3 트랜지스터(466)를 구동하는데 필요한 임계 전압(V3')보다 높으므로, 제 3 LED 모듈(455)만 구동된다. 따라서 제 4 구간(D)에서 입력 전류(520)는 I3에 해당한다.
도 3과 비교하여 도 5에 따른 입력 전류(520)의 파형은 입력 전압(510)의 파형과 더욱 유사하다. 따라서, 도 4의 LED 드라이버는 도 2의 LED 드라이버보다 더 고역률을 달성할 수 있다. 본 실시예에서는 LED 모듈들이 2개 및 3개인 경우를 중심으로 설명하였지만, 4개의 이상의 LED 모듈들을 구동할 수 있으며, LED 모듈들의 개수가 증가할수록 역률이 개선될 수 있다.
상기에서는 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예를 참조하여 설명하였지만, 해당 기술 분야의 숙련된 당업자는 하기의 특허 청구의 범위에 기재된 본 발명의 사상 및 영역으로부터 벗어나지 않는 범위 내에서 본 발명을 다양하게 수정 및 변경시킬 수 있음을 이해할 수 있을 것이다.

Claims (23)

  1. 입력 전압을 생성하는 전원부;
    제 1 스위치를 통하여 상기 전원부와 연결되고, 상기 입력 전압을 수신하여 구동되는 제 1 LED 모듈;
    상기 전원부와 연결되고, 상기 입력 전압을 수신하여 구동되는 제 2 LED 모듈; 및
    상기 제 2 LED 모듈이 구동되지는 여부를 감지하고, 상기 제 2 LED 모듈의 구동 여부에 기초하여 상기 제 1 스위치를 제어하는 제어 모듈을 포함하는 LED 드라이버.
  2. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 제어 모듈은
    상기 제 2 LED 모듈이 구동될 때, 상기 제 1 스위치를 턴오프시켜 상기 제 1 LED 모듈이 구동되지 않도록 제어하는 LED 드라이버.
  3. 제 2 항에 있어서, 상기 제어 모듈은
    상기 제 2 LED 모듈이 구동되지 않을 때, 상기 제 1 스위치를 턴온시켜 상기 제 1 LED 모듈이 구동될 수 있도록 제어하는 LED 드라이버.
  4. 제 3 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 2 LED 모듈에 포함된 1개 이상의 LED들의 문턱 전압의 합은 상기 제 1 LED 모듈에 포함된 1개 이상의 LED들의 문턱 전압의 합보다 큰 LED 드라이버.
  5. 제 4 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 2 LED 모듈에 흐르는 전류는 상기 제 1 LED 모듈로 흐르는 전류보다 큰 LED 드라이버.
  6. 제 1 항 내지 제 5 항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 LED 모듈은 제 1 전류원과 연결되고, 상기 제 1 LED 모듈이 구동시에 상기 제 1 전류원에 의하여 결정되는 전류가 흐르고,
    상기 제 2 LED 모듈은 제 2 전류원과 연결되고, 상기 제 2 LED 모듈이 구동시에 상기 제 2 전류원에 의하여 결정되는 전류가 흐르고,
    상기 제 2 전류원이 공급하는 전류는 상기 제 1 전류원이 공급하는 전류보다 큰 LED 드라이버.
  7. 제 6 항에 있어서, 상기 제 1 및 제 2 전류원은 커런트 미러형 전류원인 LED 드라이버.
  8. 제 1 항 내지 제 5 항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 상기 제 1 LED 모듈은 서로 직렬 연결된 1개 이상의 LED들을 포함하고, 상기 제 2 LED 모듈은 서로 직렬 연결된 1개 이상의 LED들을 포함하는 LED 스택을 2개 이상 포함하는 LED 드라이버.
  9. 제 1 항 내지 제 5 항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서,
    상기 제어 모듈은
    상기 제 2 LED 모듈과 연결되며, 상기 제 2 LED 모듈에 흐르는 전류를 카피(copy)하는 커런트 미러; 및
    상기 카피된 전류에 따라 상기 입력 전압을 전압 강하하여 스위칭 전압을 생성하는 저항을 포함하고,
    상기 제 1 스위치는 상기 스위칭 전압에 따라 턴온 또는 턴오프되는 LED 드라이버.
  10. 제 9 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 스위치는 파워(Power) MOSFET을 포함하는 LED 드라이버.
  11. 제 1 항 내지 제 5 항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 상기 전원부는
    교류 전압을 전파 정류하여 상기 입력 전압을 생성하는 브릿지 정류기(bridge rectifier)를 포함하는 LED 드라이버.
  12. 제 1 항 내지 제 5 항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서,
    상기 전원부와 연결되고, 상기 입력 전압을 수신하여 구동되는 제 3 LED 모듈;
    상기 전원부와 상기 제 1 LED 모듈 사이에서 상기 제 1 스위치와 직접 연결되는 제 2 스위치;
    상기 전원부와 상기 제 2 LED 모듈 사이에 연결되는 제 3 스위치; 및
    상기 제 3 LED 모듈이 구동되지는 여부를 감지하고, 상기 제 3 LED 모듈의 구동 여부에 기초하여 상기 제 2 및 제 3 스위치를 제어하는 제 2 제어 모듈을 더 포함하는 LED 드라이버.
  13. 제 12 항에 있어서, 상기 제 2 제어 모듈은
    상기 제 3 LED 모듈이 구동될 때, 상기 제 2 및 제 3 스위치를 턴오프시켜 상기 제 1 및 제 2 LED 모듈이 구동되지 않도록 제어하고,
    상기 제 3 LED 모듈이 구동되지 않을 때, 상기 제 2 스위치 및 제 3 스위치를 턴온시켜 상기 제 1 LED 모듈 또는 제 2 LED 모듈이 구동될 수 있도록 제어하는 LED 드라이버.
  14. 제 1 LED 모듈 및 제 2 LED 모듈을 구비하는 LED부를 구동하는 방법에 있어서,
    교류 전압을 정류하는 단계;
    상기 정류된 교류 전압이 제 2 전압보다 낮을 때, 상기 제 1 LED 모듈이 구동되고, 상기 제 2 LED 모듈이 구동되지 않는 단계; 및
    상기 정류된 교류 전압이 상기 제 2 전압보다 높을 때, 상기 제 2 LED 모듈이 구동되고 상기 제 1 LED 모듈이 구동되지 않는 단계를 포함하는 구동 방법.
  15. 제 14 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 2 LED 모듈에 흐르는 전류는 상기 제 1 LED 모듈에 흐르는 전류보다 큰 구동 방법.
  16. 제 14 항에 있어서,
    상기 정류된 교류 전압이 제 1 전압 - 상기 제 1 전압은 상기 제 2 전압보다 낮음 - 보다 낮은 때, 상기 제 1 및 제 2 LED 모듈이 구동되지 않는 단계를 더 포함하는 구동 방법.
  17. 제 14 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 LED 모듈은 서로 직렬 연결된 1개 이상의 LED들을 포함하고,
    상기 제 2 LED 모듈은 서로 직렬 연결된 1개 이상의 LED들을 포함하는 LED 스택을 2개 이상 포함하는 구동 방법.
  18. 제 14 항에 있어서,
    상기 LED부는 제 3 LED 모듈을 더 구비하고,
    상기 정류된 교류 전압이 제 3 전압 - 상기 제 3 전압은 상기 제 2 전압보다 높음 - 보다 높은 때, 상기 제 3 LED 모듈이 구동되고, 상기 제 1 및 제 2 LED 모듈이 구동되지 않는 단계를 더 포함하는 구동 방법.
  19. 스위치, 제 1 트랜지스터, 제 2 트랜지스터, 제 1 LED 모듈, 제 2 LED 모듈 및 저항을 구비하는 LED 드라이버에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 LED 모듈 및 상기 스위치는 전원단 및 접지단 사이에 직렬 연결되고,
    상기 제 2 LED 모듈 및 상기 제 1 트랜지스터는 상기 전원단 및 상기 접지단 사이에 직렬 연결되며,
    상기 저항 및 상기 제 2 트랜지스터는 상기 전원단 및 상기 접지단 사이에 직렬 연결되고,
    상기 스위치의 제어단은 상기 저항 및 상기 제 2 트랜지스터를 연결하는 제 1 노드에 연결되며,
    상기 제 1 트랜지스터의 게이트 및 드레인은 상기 제 2 트랜지스터의 게이트에 연결되는 LED 드라이버.
  20. 제 19 항에 있어서,
    상기 전원단 및 상기 접지단 사이에서 상기 제 1 LED 모듈 및 상기 스위치와 직렬 연결된 제 1 전류원; 및
    상기 전원단 및 상기 접지단 사이에서 상기 제 2 LED 모듈 및 상기 제 1 트랜지스터와 직렬 연결된 제 2 전류원을 더 포함하는 LED 드라이버.
  21. 제 20 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 전류원 및 상기 제 2 전류원 각각은 커런트 미러형 전류원인 LED 드라이버.
  22. 제 19 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 LED 모듈은 서로 직렬 연결된 1개 이상의 LED들을 포함하며,
    상기 제 2 LED 모듈은 서로 병렬 연결된 2개 이상의 LED 스택들을 포함하며,
    상기 LED 스택들 각각은 서로 직렬 연결된 1개 이상의 LED들을 포함하는 LED 드라이버.
  23. 제 19 항에 있어서,
    상기 스위치는 제 3 트랜지스터를 포함하며,
    상기 제 3 트랜지스터의 소스 및 드레인 중 어느 하나는 상기 전원단 및 접지단 중 어느 하나에 연결되며,
    상기 제 3 트랜지스터의 상기 소스 및 드레인 중 나머지 하나는 상기 제 1 LED 모듈에 연결되며,
    상기 제 3 트랜지스터의 게이트는 상기 제 1 노드에 연결된 LED 드라이버.
