Definitions
- the present invention relates to sheets for covering mattresses and, in particular, to fitted sheets.
- Fitted sheets are a common and popular method of covering and protecting mattresses. Fitted sheets are considered to provide a comfortable and tidy mattress covering when compared to flat sheets, blankets and the like.
- Mattresses are generally supplied in standard sizes of length and width, for example, king size, double size and single size. Mattress depth (or height), however, may vary with the material and/or design of each mattress. Extra layers such as latex or quilted tops are often included within a mattress to provide greater comfort and/or orthopaedic support to a user. Such layers on a mattress affect the depth which a sheet must cover to cover the mattress.
- Additional mattress toppers which can be placed on top of a mattress to provide similar improved comfort and/or orthopaedic support are also popular.
- the toppers include latex, quilted and sheep skin overlays. Such toppers on a mattress also affect the depth which a sheet must cover to cover the mattress, in such cases including the depth of the mattress plus the depth of the mattress topper. Thinner toppers such as mattress protectors are also commonly used and, again, add to the depth that a sheet is required to cover.
- a first aspect of the present disclosure provides a fitted sheet, comprising:
- At least a first portion of fabric for covering a first surface of a mattress, the first surface being the surface which supports a user laying on the mattress when the mattress is in use, and for covering one or more further surfaces of the mattress, said first portion of fabric comprising an edge with an elastic portion of fabric attached thereto for use in securing the sheet to the mattress;
- At least one fabric-adjusting device attached to the first portion of fabric of said sheet, such that the first portion of fabric is uniformly adjustable in size depending on depth of the mattress.
- a second aspect of the present disclosure provides a fitted sheet, comprising: a first portion of fabric for covering a first surface of a mattress, the first surface being the surface which supports a user laying on the mattress when the mattress is in use; at least a second portion of fabric attached to said first portion of fabric, said second portion of fabric being configured for covering one or more further surfaces of the mattress, said second portion of fabric comprising an edge with an elastic portion of fabric attached for use in securing the sheet to the mattress; and
- At least one fabric-adjusting device attached to the second portion of fabric of said sheet, such that the second portion of fabric is uniformly adjustable in size depending on depth of the mattress.
- a third aspect of the present disclosure provides a method of covering a mattress with a fitted sheet, comprising:
- first surface of the mattress with a first portion of fabric of the sheet, the first surface being the surface which supports a user laying on the mattress when the mattress is in use;
- a fourth aspect of the present disclosure provides a method of covering a mattress with a fitted sheet, comprising:
- first surface of the mattress with a first portion of fabric of the sheet, the first surface being the surface which supports a user laying on the mattress when the mattress is in use; covering one or more further surfaces of the mattress with at least a second portion of fabric attached to said first portion of fabric of the sheet, the sheet being secured to the mattress by an edge of said second portion of fabric, said edge comprising an elastic portion of fabric attached thereto;

- the sheet 100 is formed from a fabric such as cotton, silk, linen, polyester or the like.
- the sheet 100 comprises a first portion of fabric 108 for covering a first surface 116 of mattress 104.
- the first surface 1 16 of mattress 104 may be referred to as "the top surface” of the mattress 104 and is the surface 116 which supports a user laying on the mattress 104 when the mattress 104 is in use.
- the sheet 100 also comprises four (second) portions of fabric 1 10A, 1 10B, 1 IOC and HOD attached to the first portion of fabric 108, along joins 115A, 115B, 1 15C and 1 15D, respectively.
- the fabric portions 1 10A, HOB, 1 IOC and HOD may be sewn, glued or otherwise attached to the first fabric portion 108, along joins 115A, 115B, 1 15C and 1 15D.
- the fabric portions 1 1 OA, 1 10B, 1 10C and 1 10D are configured for covering one or more further surfaces of the mattress 104.
- the fabric portions 11 OA, HOB, HOC and HOD are configured to cover at least surfaces 1 18A, 1 18B, 1 18C and 1 18D, respectively, of the mattress 104.
- the fabric portions 11 OA, 1 10B, HOC and HOD will be generically referred to below as the fabric portions 1 10 unless specifically referred to.
- the further surfaces 1 18A, 1 18B, 1 18C and 1 18D of the mattress 104 may be referred to as "side surfaces" and typically have a substantially vertical orientation when the mattress 104 is in use and top surface 116 is facing substantially in an upward direction.
- the second fabric portions 1 1 OA, HOB, HOC and 110D may be formed by a single piece (or portion) of fabric attached to the first fabric portion 108, along a single join corresponding to joins 1 15A, 1 15B, 1 15C and 1 15D.
- the second fabric portions 10A, HOB, HOC and 1 10D may be formed by any suitable number of pieces (or portions) of fabric attached to the first fabric portion 108.
- At least one fabric-adjusting device 1 12 is attached to the fabric portions 1 10 of the sheet 100, such that the second portions of fabric 1 10 are uniformly adjustable in size depending on depth 106 of the mattress 104, as will be described in detail below.
- the fabric-adjusting device 1 12 is a zip attached to the fabric portions 1 10 of sheet 100.
- the fabric-adjusting device 1 12 is formed by one or more portions of hook and loop fastener fabric (e.g., such as those being manufactured and sold under the VELCRO® brand) suitably attached to the second fabric portions 110 to uniformly adjust the second fabric portions 110 in size depending on depth 106 of the mattress 104, again, as will be described in detail below.
- the zip 1 12 comprises two zip strips 410 and 412 (see Fig. 4) formed by fabric tape, each carrying from tens to hundreds of specially shaped metal or plastic teeth.
- the teeth of each of the zip strips 410 and 412 may be joined (so that the teeth of each zip strip 410 and 412 interlock with each other) or separated using a hand-operated slider 414.
- the zip strips 410 and 412 are attached to the fabric portions 1 10 of sheet 100 so that the zip 1 12 runs around a full perimeter of sheet 100 and mattress 104.
- the depth 106 of the vertical sides 1 18A, 118B, 118C and 1 18D of the mattress 104 is reasonably similar to the corresponding fabric portions 1 10 of sheet 100 when the zip 1 12 is in a closed position (i.e., the zip strips are joined).
- the zip 112 is attached to the sheet 100 so that opening or closing the zip 1 12 (or joining the zip strips 410 and 412) uniformly alters the depth of all four fabric portions 110A, 1 10B, 1 IOC and 110D of the sheet 100.
- a further surface 201 of the mattress 104 which may be referred to as an "underside" surface, is visible in Fig. 2.
- the underside surface 201 typically sits on the base of a bed for which the mattress 104 is being used.
- the fabric portions 110 cover a perimeter on the outside edge of mattress 104.

- the elastic fabric portion 208 secures the sheet 100 in place on the mattress 104.
- the elastic fabric portion 208 closes in . on itself to form substantially rounded corners 206.
- Fig. 4 shows the fitted sheet 100 covering another mattress 404 (not visible through sheet 100, where the mattress 404 is indicated by phantom lines).
- Mattress 404 has depth 406, which is greater than depth 106 of mattress 104 and greater than the depth of the fabric portions 1 10 of sheet 100 when zipper 1 12 is closed.
- the zip 1 12 is placed in an open position, i.e., with the zip strips 410 and 412 separated as shown in Fig. 4. Opening the zip 1 12 is implemented by hand using the standard zip slider 414 attached to zips strips 410 and 412.
- the fabric portion 108 of the sheet 100 covers the top surface 416 of mattress 404 and the fabric portions 110 cover vertical side surfaces of mattress 404.
- the extra folds of fabric 302 increase the length of fabric in the fabric portions 1 10 of the sheet 100 when zip 112 is in an open position.
- the fabric portions 1 1 OA, HOB, HOC and HOD of sheet 100 are now long enough to cover depth 406 of mattress 404, as seen in further longitudinal cross-sectional view of Fig. 5.
- the fitted sheet 100 may be used for covering the mattress 104 (or the mattress 404), by firstly, covering a first surface 116 of the mattress 104 with a first portion of fabric 108 of the sheet 100. Then, one or more further surfaces 1 18A, 1 18B, 1 18C and 1 18D of the mattress 104 may be covered with the fabric portions 1 10A, HOB, HOC and HOD, respectively (or at least one second portion of fabric). As described above, the fabric portions 1 10 are attached to the first fabric portion 108 of the sheet 110. As also described above, when covering the mattress 104, the sheet 100 is secured to the mattress 104 by an elastic edge 208. The elastic edge 208 is formed by an elastic portion of fabric attached to the fabric portions 110.
- the fabric portions 110 of the sheet 100 may then be adjusted, depending on depth of the mattress 104, by opening or closing the fabric- adjusting device, in the form of the zip 1 12, attached to the fabric portions 1 10 of the sheet 100, such that the fabric portions 1 10 are uniformly adjusted in size.
- the sheet 100 may be formed by a single portion of fabric.
- the single portion of fabric is configured to cover the top surface 116, side surfaces 1 18A, 1 18B, 1 18C and 118D, and at least a portion of the underside surface 201 (see Fig. 2) of the mattress 104.
- An elastic portion of fabric (e.g., 208) is attached to the single fabric portion.
- the fabric-adjusting device 1 12 is also attached to the single portion of fabric of the sheet 100, such that the single portion of fabric is uniformly adjustable in size depending on depth 106 of the mattress 104, as described above.
