Abstract

The present invention relates to a touch screen apparatus for visually impaired people, and to a method for inputting characters to the apparatus. The touch screen apparatus of the present invention comprises: a touch screen; a touch-sensing unit which determines the touched position and the touch duration when a touch is sensed on the touch screen; a Braille-input initializing unit which determines, if touches by three touch pointers are sensed by the touch-sensing unit, whether or not coordinate values corresponding to the touch positions fall within a predetermined effective range, sets up touch regions for each touch pointer if the coordinate values fall within the effective range, and performs an initialization for Braille input; a Braille-recognition unit which, if multiple touches are sensed when the initialization for Braille input is performed, recognizes Braille based on the touch positions and touch duration of said multiple touches; a reverse Braille translation unit which interprets the Braille recognized by the Braille recognition unit as characters based on a prestored Braille table, and outputs the interpreted Braille onto the touch screen; and a speech synthesis treatment unit which converts the interpreted characters into speech data using a text to speech (TTS) engine, and outputs the speech data. According to the present invention, a visually impaired person may easily input characters to a touch screen apparatus adopting a full touch system using an input method according to a Braille system suitable for the characteristics of the visually impaired person.
