Definitions

  • the present invention relates to construction and maintenance of wells for petroleum production, such as exploration, appraisal, production and injection wells. Background of the invention and prior art
  • the inconsistency of the well representation can result in wrong decisions and extensive work that should be avoided.
  • the objective of the invention is to provide a tool, a method and use in order to construct and maintain petroleum wells, resulting in reduced failure rate of decisions and reduced work effort during construction, maintenance and operation of wells. Summary of the invention
  • the invention provides a tool for construction and maintenance of petroleum wells, comprising representation of a well or each well in a group of well categories, such as well in the drilling, completion, intervention, workover or abandonment phase.
  • the tool is distinctive in that each well is represented by elements having a consistent shape and position of assembly.
  • each element represented is proportionally correct but the vertical dimension of well elements, curvature and optionally further selected geometrical parameters, can be varied as controlled by a user of the tool, and the assembly of the elements are arranged in a logical order or position so as to represent a functional well.
  • vertical dimension of well elements it is meant the dimension along the longitudinal axis of the well or wellbore, which means that wells having deviated parts or side bores can be represented consistently.
  • the invention also provides a method for the same purpose, distinctive by representing each well using a consistent shape and position of assembly.
  • the invention also provides use of the tool and the method of the invention, for illustration of well barrier elements in petroleum wells, particularly for avoiding effects of failure of an element of a well system but also for reducing the risk for making wrong decisions and reducing the time for representing, interpreting and developing illustrations with qualification and monitoring requirements.

  • the invention will inter alia:
  • the invention will ensure that illustrations prepared by a company or by the industry will be presented in a graphically consistent manner. This will reduce the need for interpreting the well situation as it will always be presented in a consistent graphical fashion.
  • the representation will always include the main well elements and the well barriers, and also representations for construction purposes without barrier definitions.
  • the main well elements are the tubular elements constituting the well
  • the well barrier elements are the elements controlling the pressure in the well.
  • representations completion representations and pressure control equipment representations, are included, at a level of detail that can be chosen and configured by the user.
  • the next level of detail can be reached by for example right button clicking on the specific element
  • the detailed information can be arranged in one or more layers of more detailed or more specific information, and can include for example detailed as built illustrations, simulation and analysis data, governing provisions and consequence simulations or analysis by failure of the element. It will make it easier for stakeholders to visualize and assess the consequences if a barrier element fails and what is the resulting effect, with subsequent protection and potential need for mitigating actions to be planned for. With availability of graphical components in a library, less time will be spent on producing the end products, this will allow the engineering resources to be spent on quality assuring the technical solutions rather than on masterminding the drawing application to illustrate the chosen solution.
  • the use of the invention will reduce numbers of hours needed to produce the necessary illustrations for a well activity. This can amount to several working days for a well activity with several illustration steps to be prepared. Having a proper well barrier definition clearly communicated to all stakeholders will give everyone a better possibility to prevent serious incidents that can have catastrophic effect and/or severe loss of revenue or reputation.
  • Functionality is based on drag-and-drop technology with use of right-click menus with ability to manipulate the appearance of components though a parameter set associated with the component (size, complexity, configuration, position) (Fig. 9, 10).
  • Drilling BOP configuration representing actual rig BOP, such as number and type of rams and choke and kill line access points (Fig. 9)
  • the technical effect of the invention is expected to be considerable as it will provide a tool to consistently represent well integrity and barrier definitions in petroleum wells.
  • the consistency and ease of use is believed to be a contributing factor to enhance stakeholders understanding of complex situations that can have high risk potentials.
  • the direct economic effect is amounting to 2-10.000+ USD pr well activity in time saving in preparation of the necessary working illustrations. This time saved can then be used on quality engineering safeguarding the upcoming work.
  • the potential economic effect of the invention is not derived from its direct use, but in its potential to prevent incidents, accidents and catastrophes.
