Definitions
- the present invention relates generally to crowdsourcing and peer to peer communication using multimedia set-top box (STB) systems.
- STB multimedia set-top box
- Crowdsourcing is a distributed problem-solving and production model.
- problems are broadcasted to an unknown group of solvers in the form of an open call for solutions.
- Users which also known as the crowd, typically form into online communities, and the crowd submits solutions.
- the crowd also sorts through the solutions, finding the best ones.
- P2P peer-to-peer
- the P2P application promotes a social networking aspect by allowing devices connecting to either the home mesh network and/or Internet to share contents and create common-interest channels.
- the P2P application does not require support from network infrastructure (e.g., no central servers), and consequently is extremely cost-effective and easy to deploy.
- the distributed nature of this system allows users to join or leave the network at will. It takes advantage of the local home mesh network connectivity, or existing Internet connections.
- a participant that tunes into a broadcast on an Internet channel is not only downloading a video stream, but also uploading it to other participants watching the program.
- Data mining systems capture user preferences and create personalized Internet channels on the TV using the P2P network.
- the present invention is providing media content sharing system process comprising of several steps. First and foremost is executing P2P discovery by STB to other STB using standard P2P protocol. Then, the STB will find other computers running BitTorrent that have the complete file and those with a portion of the file by using BitTorrent client software which communicate with a tracker. When the STB detects that it is connected to other crowdsourcing peers; it will aggregate metadata feedback from all the users downloading multimedia content into their STB. Then, the process continue by identifying the swarm by the tracker; and tracking pieces of the file with other computers in the swarm which enable a person's computer receives multiple pieces of the file simultaneously;.
- FIG.l illustrates a schematic block diagram of the present invention.
- FIG.2 illustrates a flow chart of the logic of the present invention.
- FIG.3 illustrates a crowdsource multimedia metadata layout concept of the present invention.
- the present invention comprising multiple crowd- sourcing peers communicate with each other using peer to peer (P2P) principles over a wide area network 2 such as the Internet.
- P2P peer to peer
- An example of crowdsourcing peer network 3 may one or more TV systems with each TV system may include a TV with multimedia display 4 such as a flat panel standard definition/high definition (HD) display for presenting TV programming.
- a TV with multimedia display 4 such as a flat panel standard definition/high definition (HD) display for presenting TV programming.
- the TV system comprising a set-top-box 5 is installed externally from the TV 4 and connected thereto.
- the set-top-box 5 comprising metadata 6 which contain information about the audio and/or video data 7 that is included in the signal's data stream. It might be considered data about the data itself. Metadata 6 also can aid in providing Interactivity.
- Clients that have already begun downloading also communicate with the tracker 8 periodically to negotiate with newer peers and provide statistics; however, after the initial reception of peer data, peer communication can continue without a tracker 8.
- the central part of the set-top-box 5 is CPU 9 (a microprocessor chip) which does most of the data processing.
- the CPU 9 and the memory form the central part of a computer to which the peripherals 11 are attached.
- RAM 10 in the set-top-box 5 is a form of computer data storage. It is in the form ofintegrated circuitsthat allow storeddatato be accessed in any order (i.e., atrandom).
- the set- top-box 5 also has a network interface 12 which connects set-top-box 5 to a network that makes it possible to communicate with the servers.
- a wireless remote control 13 also may be provided for inputting user commands to the multimedia display 4 and the set-top-box 5.
- TV system when TV system detects that it is connected to other crowd- sourcing peers, it executes P2P discovery to other TV system using standard P2P protocol. Then, BitTorrent client software communicates with a tracker to find other computers running BitTorrent that have the complete file (seed computers) and those with a portion of the file (peers that are usually in the process of downloading the file). Next, metadata feedback from all users downloading multimedia content will be aggregated. The tracker will then identify the swarm. It includes the connected computers that have all or a portion of the file and is in the process of sending or receiving it. The tracker helps the client software track pieces of the file with other computers in the swarm which enable a person's computer receives multiple pieces of the file simultaneously.
- bit-torrent client user may download audio/video from the torrent site.
- the torrent download process started when the user opens a web page and clicks a link for the file.
- the metadata file (.torrent-file) is obtained from the website. Then, a dedicated website on the internet is built to collect feedbacks from all users
