Abstract
The invention is related to an apparatus for the removal of a paint roll (9) from a paint roll holder (1, 2). Through the invention, by means of an application (3) disposed on the frame (1) of the paint roll, the paint roll is slid off the holder (2) by the principle of pivotal action. By use of the invention, a used paint roll or one that is to be replaced can be removed in a controlled manner using one hand, without it needing to be touched by hand. The use of this invention ensures that after painting there is only a minimal chance of touching the paint when removing a paint-saturated paint roll.
Description
Title: PAINT ROLLER REMOVER DEVICE
The invention is related to an improved paint roll holder and an apparatus respectively, hereinafter also called an
application, to operate together with a standard paint roll holder .
Paint roll holders with removable paint rolls are a matter of common knowledge. A much used standard paint roll holder consists of a curved metal frame, or a frame made of any other material, with at one side a wooden or plastic handle. In this type of paint roll holder, the paint roll is often secured in such a manner that, with the paint roll in rolling motion, paint can be applied to a surface. To this end, the paint roll is first drawn through the paint. The paint roll itself consists of a paint-absorbing material, with at its centre a hollow axle that can be slid clampwise over a straight extremity of the paint roll holder and in which a rotational movement of the roll around that extremity remains possible.
A paint roller is an efficient device for the application of paint on surfaces such as walls and the like. Cleaning the paint roll after use is always quite a time-consuming and tedious task however, usually resulting in the paint roll being thrown away after use. To allow this, the paint- saturated paint roll must be removed from the holder.
Herein the shortcoming of the present paint roll holder can be identified. The removal of the paint roll takes place mainly by hand, or by using an additional technique intended to avoid the hands coming into direct contact with the paint, but whereby the device itself, to a lesser or greater degree, is in contact with the paint. It would therefore be desirable to provide a standard paint roller with an apparatus that could
separate the paint-saturated roll from the holder in a simple and controlled manner and whereby making a mess with paint, or direct contact with the paint on the paint roll, can be reduced to a minimum.
It is noted that the patent literature describes systems for removing a paint roll from a paint roll holder. In this regard, see configurations such as shown in US4667361 and US6829803 for example. Such paint roll removers operate according to the method of pushing or sliding the paint roll off the holder by means of a separate application in direct contact with the paint roll and the paint. Said methodologies for removing a paint roll from the holder are undesirable, since in this manner they are unsuitable for separating the paint roll from the holder in a clean and controlled manner. In combination with the paint roll on the paint roll holder and the inventions described, these must be operated with two hands in order to be effective, and direct contact between paint and invention is well-nigh unavoidable. Said
methodologies thus still present an enormously great chance of messing with paint.
The disadvantages of said configurations can be solved by a handy system that can slide a paint roll off a paint roll holder in a controlled manner, as proposed according to the current invention. To accomplish this, the user does not need to touch either the paint roll or the paint, and he can operate the system simultaneously and with the same hand as that with which he operates the paint roll holder.
The invention provides a paint roll cast-off system
(application) that enables fast and easy removal of a paint roll from a frame of a paint roll holder. This allows a used paint roll, or one that is to be replaced, to be removed
without having to touch it by hand. The use of this
application ensures there is only a minimal chance of touching the paint of a paint-saturated paint roll. This invention refers mainly to applications for applying a layer of paint to a surface by means of a paint roller and to which more specifically is added, through the invention, that a paint roll can be removed from the holder of a paint roll holder easily and in a controlled manner. By means of this invention, there is only a minimal chance of paint mess upon removal of the paint roll.
The invention will be further explained below with reference to an exemplary embodiment of the construction according to the invention shown in the figures.
Figure 1 shows an example of a paint roll holder. This
consists of a (plastic) handle ( 2 ) and a curved metal frame (1) on which a paint roll can be slid.
Figure 2 shows a paint roll holder to which a paint roll cast- off system (the application) ( 3 ) is attached. The application is pivotally attached (4) to the frame (1), thus enabling a lever movement.
Figure 3 shows a paint roll holder on which a paint roll (9) has been slid. In this position, the application resides clampwise (7) on the frame (1), thereby retaining the full functionality of the original objective of the paint roller.
Figure 4 shows the action for the removal of the paint roll
(9) from the frame (1) of the paint roll holder. By means of the index and middle finger of the hand
(10) , pressure is exerted on the lowest portion of the application (8) in the direction of the handle (2). This causes the portion above the pivotal point (4) to move in an opposite direction towards the paint roll (9), pushing it off the frame (1) of the paint roll holder.
Figure 5 shows the paint roll holder and application from a different angle. Here the U-profile (11), the exploded U-profile (6) and the point of engagement
(5) of the application on the paint roll (9) are made clear .
Figure 6 shows the side elevation of the paint roll holder at the point in time that the application (3) is clamped to the frame (1) by means of the constriction (7).
The system (the application) (3) is rotatably/tiltably
attached (4) to the curved metal frame (1) from a paint roll holder between hand-grip (2) and paint roll (9). At the paint roll, displacement/transposition of the lowest portion (8) at the handle (2) results in the paint roll (9) being pushed off the frame (1) . The application has a pivotal point (4) by attachment of the application by means, for example, of a pin through the
application and the frame (1) on the frame (3) of the paint roll holder (Fig. 1) . However, the application can also be attached to the metal frame (1) in another way, for example by means of clamping to the metal frame (1), whereby the
application is also releasable from said metal frame and whereby the metal frame is also not mechanically weakened as a result of the hole that is required to be made in it for accommodating said pin in the pivotal point (4) .
By exerting a force with the hand (10) on the lowest portion of the application (8), the portion in the drawing residing above the pivotal point (4) is brought into movement by means of pivotal action. As a result, the extremity of the
application (5) moves/tilts in the direction of the paint roll (9), whereby the paint roll (9) is slid off the frame (1).
The application (3) is made of metal, plastic or any other material that is strong enough to receive, by means of the pivotal action, the force required to slide the paint roll (9) axially off the frame (1) . The application has a curved form whereby, after attachment of the application to the frame (4), pivotal action is allowed. The application has a U-shaped profile (11), thereby (partly) overlaying the frame (1) of the paint roll holder. The application can be attached clampwise to the frame during painting by means of a modification of the application (7). Said modification consists of a constriction on the inner side of the application, whereby at said location the inner diameter of the U-profile is fractionally smaller than the diameter of the frame of the paint roll holder. The application can also be secured to the frame by implementing a spring system at the pivotal point (4), such that by releasing the application it rebounds to its original position. On the application, closest to the paint roll, the base of the U- profile is cut away (6) such that the upright edges of the U- profile (5) can move along the frame (1) upon movement of the application. Hereby equal pressure is exerted on the paint roll (9) to the left and right of the paint roll.
As required, detailed embodiments of the present invention are disclosed herein; however, it is to be understood that the disclosed embodiments are merely exemplary of the invention that may be embodied in various and alternative forms. The
figures are not necessarily to scale, some features may be exaggerated or minimized to show details of particular components. Therefore, specific structural and functional details disclosed here are not to be interpreted as limiting, but merely as a basis for the claims and as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to variously employ the present invention.
