Abstract
The invention relates to a method for controlling the starter of a heat engine of a vehicle including a system for automatically stopping and restarting the engine. The starter comprises a pinion that can be rotated and subsequently engaged with the ring gear of the flywheel while powering an electric motor. The method comprises the following steps consisting in: determining a decreasing engine speed model, using test equipment; when the engine stops, using the model to predict the decreasing profile (10) of the engine speed; determining the target speed zones (11, 12, 13) in said profile, as a function of at least one criterion (e.g. between two top dead centres); selecting one (12) of the target speed zones; and powering the electric motor, the pinion being engaged in the ring gear when the speed reaches the selected target zone.
