Abstract
A sensor detects damage to a surface or structure. The sensor is constructed of a material that creates a continuous, open loop trace that is broken when the surface is damaged. The state of the sensor is checked using an electronic circuit and the status can be presented through a display which is connected to the sensor directly or disposed remotely. An example of the application of this technology is monitoring the structural integrity of a protective helmet, to report damage that is either difficult to see directly or that may occur as a result of any one of numerous impacts.
