Description

A TABLE
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a table.
Many types of tables are obviously known. The present invention is directed towards a unique kind of table that the applicant refers to as a four- in-one table. The table includes two sizes of table top and is able to be used at two different heights therefore providing flexibility for the user. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to an example embodiment of the present invention there is provided a table including: a table top comprised of two portions connected together by a hinge, wherein the two portions are movable from an open position where they are located adjacent one another and are co-planar with one another and a second position where the one portion is located on top of the other portion; and at least two L shaped legs rotatable between a first position in which an end of the L rests on the floor and the table top is held at a first height and a second position in which an arm of the L rests on the floor so that the table top is held at a second height.
Wherein the second height is lower than the first height.
The table may further comprise a frame to which the table top and legs are connected.
The table top may be rotatable between a first orientation and a second orientation.
Thus the table is movable between four positions: a. a first position where the legs are resting on the floor on an end of the L so that the table is at the first height and the table top is in the first orientation and second position where the one portion is located on top of the other portion; b. a second position where the legs are resting on the floor on an end of the L so that the table is at the first height and the table top is in the second orientation and open position where the one portion is located adjacent the other portion; c. a third position where the arm of the L rests on the floor so that the table top is held at the second height and the table top is in the first orientation and second position where the one portion is located on top of the other portion; and d. a fourth position where the arm of the L rests on the floor so that the table top is held at the second height and the table top is in the second orientation and open position where the one portion is located adjacent the other portion.
In one example, the table includes at least four L shaped legs rotatable between the first position and second position.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING
Figure 1 shows a table according to one embodiment in a first position with the table top exploded off the table for illustrative purposes;
Figure 2 shows a side view of the table of Figure 1 with the table top back in position;
Figure 3 shows a side view of the table of Figure 2 in another position;
Figure 4 shows a perspective view of the table of Figure 3;
Figure 5 shows a perspective view of the table in another position;
and
Figure 6 shows a perspective view of the table in another position. DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
Referring to the accompanying drawings, a table 10 includes a table top 12 and legs 14.
The table top 12 is comprised of two portions 12a and 12b connected together by a hinge 16. In the illustrated embodiment there are three hinges 16 but it will be appreciated that any number of hinges 16 could be used.
The two portions 12a and 12b are movable from an open position (shown in Figures 5 and 6) where they are located adjacent one another and are co- planar with one another and a second position (shown in Figures 1 and 4) where the one portion is located on top of the other portion.
The legs 14 of the table include at least two L shaped legs, preferably four L shaped legs. These legs 14 are rotatable between a first position in which an end of the L rests on the floor (shown in Figures 1 , 2 and 5) and the table top is held at a first height and a second position in which an arm of the L rests on the floor so that the table top is held at a second height (shown in Figures 3, 4 and 6).
In the configuration of the illustrated embodiment, the second height is lower than the first height.
In the illustrated embodiment, the table top 12 and the legs 14 are connected to a frame 18.
The legs 14 are connected in pivot fashion to the frame 18 so that they can rotate between the two positions illustrated.
The table top is also connected in pivot fashion to the frame 18 so that the table top can pivot between the positions shown in Figures 4 and 6 or 1 and 5, for example. These are referred to for ease of reference as a first orientation and a second orientation.
The table operates as follows. In Figure 1 the table is shown in a first position. Here the legs 14 are resting on the floor on an end of the L and the table top 12 is in the first orientation and the second position where the one portion is located on top of the other portion. In this position the table is used for dining for a smaller number of people.
The table top 12 can be expanded by first being rotated about a pivot point (not shown) and then opened so that the table top is in the second orientation open position where they are located adjacent one another and are co-planar with one another. This is shown in Figure 5. It will be appreciated that in this second position the table will again typically be used for dining but by a larger number of people than would use the table in the position in Figure 1.
From the first position shown in Figure 1 the table can be moved to a third position shown in Figure 4. In this position the table top is in the first orientation. To get the table into this position the table is lifted slightly off the floor and the legs start to move into this position by virtue of their weight and gravity. The table can then be lowered where the weight of the table moving onto the legs will move the legs further into this position until the table comes to rest as shown in Figure 4.
It will be appreciated that in this position the table is used as a coffee table due to its lower height on which people will place coffee or tea cups and side plates with savoury snacks for example.
For a larger coffee table the table top 12 can now be opened into the position shown in Figure 6 where the table top 12 is expanded by first being rotated about a pivot point (not shown) in the second orientation and then opened so that the table top is in the open position where they are located adjacent one another and are co-planar with one another. Thus it will be appreciated that the table can be moved through the four different positions and offers a versatile table for different uses.
