Abstract
When coal, biomass and waste, containing also other non-biomass materials as plastics and synthetic rubbers, are heated in a closed vessel or chamber, the molecular structure disintegrates in a gas product and a rest fraction. The invention relates to a system for treating biomass in which the discharged product gas is lead through one eductor as a propellant for the purpose of pumping the rest fraction out of the closed vessel. The invention is also related to a method for treating biomass, preferably by making use of a system according to the invention.
Description
SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR TREATING BIOMASS The invention relates to a system for treating biomass. The invention also relates to a method for treating biomass, preferably by making use of a system according to the invention.
When coal, biomass and waste, containing also other non-biomass materials as plastics and synthetic rubbers, are heated in a closed vessel or chamber, the molecular structure disintegrates. The products of this process are combustible gases at ambient temperature, such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide, liquid pyrolysis products, and a variety of hydrocarbons and tar, and charred
material. This process, thermal cracking, is a basic known process, also known as pyrolysis. In a gasification process air is added insufficiently for an incomplete combustion, giving more gaseous products and less or no liquid products or char as with pyrolysis processes. Gasification of coal, biomass and waste has the objective to produce a
combustible gas as a gaseous fuel.
In gasifiers or pyrolysis and thermal cracking installations the reactions and treatments in some cases take place in more than one closed reactor. Char and ashes need to be transported from one reactor to another. In many cases the reactors need to be apart, due to difference in maintained temperatures.
The current solutions to transport charred material and ashes are with screw conveyers, rams or rotating valves (air locks) . The disadvantage of these systems is that they contain moving parts. When
transporting materials with insufficient defined properties
as biomass and waste, particles may jam or erode moving parts of mentioned transport systems.
It is an object of the invention to provide an improved system for treating and transporting biomass.
This object can be achieved by providing a system according to claim 1 and by providing a method according to claim 2. The invention disclosed in this description is a transportation form of coal, coal products, charred material and other residues in thermal cracking
installations as gasifiers and pyrolysis installations using pneumatic transport by an eductor ("straalpomp") and using synthesis gas or flue gas as a drive gas. Pneumatic transport using an eductor makes it possible to operate different reactor vessels at approximately the same pressure.
In the method according the invention, the pneumatic transportation is realised by an eductor as a system to transport coal, coal products, charred material and ashes from one reactor to another using synthesis gas or flue gas as a drive gas. With pneumatic transport bulk particles are driven through pipes by means of blowing a gas, in most cases air, through the pipes at high speed.
The drive gas is blown into an eductor placed in the middle of the pneumatic system, therefore creating a flow of drive gas in one direction. This flow of drive gas creates a lower pressure in the pipe section before the joint where the eductor is placed. The lower pressure creates a flow of gas created by a pyrolysis or
gasification process, carrying particles from one reactor to the other. Because the drive gas is flue gas or
synthesis gas, no (partial) combustion of the gas or particles take place.
Claims
1. System for the treatment of biomass, comprising:
at least one gasification device for the conversion of the combustible material in to a product gas and a rest fraction, in which the gasification device has at least one first discharge for the discharging of the product gas, and at least one second discharge for the discharging of the rest fraction,
- at least one eductor connected with the second discharge of the gasification device for pumping at least one part of the rest fraction of the combustible material out of the gasification device, said eductor also being connected with the first discharge of the eductor for the leading of product gas through the eductor as a propellant for the purpose of pumping the rest fraction out of the
gasification device.
2. Method for treating combustible material,
preferably by using the system according to claim 1, comprising the following steps:
A) leading of the combustible material though the gasification device,
B) converting the biomass by means of heating in the gasification device in a product gas and a rest fraction,
C) discharging at least a part of the formed product gas through the first discharge from the gasification device, and
D) removing the gasification device at least a part of the rest fraction through the second discharge from the gasification device using an eductor, at least a part of the removed product gas being led through the eductor as a propellant .
3. Method according to claim 2,
characterized in that
the product gas comprises at least on of the following components: flue gas, methane, water vapor, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and/or carbon dioxide.
